Head Trauma and Concussions in Film and Television Stunt Performers: An Exploratory Study.

OBJECTIVES: The aims of the study were to assess prevalence and management of head impacts in stunt performers and to evaluate performers' quality of life and ability to work after head injury. METHODS: Stunt performers completed an online survey about head impacts/head whips history, diagnosed concussions, reasons for not reporting injuries, health care sought after head impacts, attitudes toward on-set concussion management, perceived ability to work as a stunt performer, and health-related quality of life. RESULTS: One hundred seventy-three performers (80%) indicated at least one head imp

The Association of Television Viewing in Childhood With Overweight and Obesity Throughout the Life Course.

Few studies have addressed the association between television viewing time in childhood and overweight/obesity across the life course. Among 30,921 mother-daughter dyads from the Nurses' Mothers' Cohort (2001) and the Nurses' Health Study II (1989 and 1991), the following information was collected: daughter's television viewing time and physical activity (PA) level at ages 3-5 and 5-10 years, somatotype at ages 5 and 10 years, and body mass index at age 18 years and in adulthood (ages 26-45 years). According to multivariable-adjusted logistic regression models, television viewing at least 4 ho

Autobiographical memories of televised sporting events watched in different social settings.

The present study asked 157 men and 154 women to recall their memories of viewing both enjoyed and nonenjoyed televised sporting events from the past year in each of four social circumstances: with friends, with family, with spouse, boyfriend/girlfriend or significant other, and by oneself. For memories of all eight events, participants were asked (1) the number and sex of coviewers, (2) concurrent behaviors and cognitions engaged in while viewing, (3) uses and gratifications sought for enjoyed events, and (4) failed uses and gratifications for nonenjoyed events. Two analyses of variance, one

Vagotonicity of violence: biochemical and cardiac responses to violent films and television programmes.

In a search for a reproducible means of evoking different types of emotional stress it was found that in spite of increased adrenaline secretion slowing of the heart occurred when watching violent television programmes. Further evidence of increased vagal tone was provided by the "sinus arrhythmia" effect, a widening of the gap between the maximum and minimum heart rates during the respiratory cycle in parts of the humour, violence, and suspense sections of the television programme.Groups of people taken to see two particularly violent films showed similar evidence suggesting vagal overactivit

Television decreases intra-operative hypertensive events in cataract surgery: a randomized clinical trial.

PURPOSE: To compare the effects of television (TV) vs. music vs. control on hypertensive events and anxiety in cataract surgery. METHODS: A prospective, single-masked, randomized controlled trial of 476 adult cataract surgery patients at a surgical center in New York. Patients were randomized to either listen to classical music, view a home design and renovation program, or a control group. Blood pressure, heart rate, and anxiety levels (VAS-A) were measured before and 20 minutes post-intervention. Intra-operative hypertensive events (IOEs) were recorded. RESULTS: Of 650 enrolled patients, 4

Living alone, feeling connected: television engagement, loneliness, and social isolation among elderly women.

BACKGROUND: Rapidly changing family and migration contexts have made loneliness among older women in single-person households a key psychosocial issue. The literature has focused on loneliness as a lack of social interaction and isolation, with little attention to the emotional aspects of living alone and mediated forms of social contact. OBJECTIVES: This study examined the lived experiences of older women living alone in Kerala, India, including living alone, television engagement, emotional coping, memory, and relational continuity. DESIGN: A qualitative reflexive thematic analysis with ph

Exploring factors influencing digitally disadvantaged students' behavioral intention to use educational television programs.

INTRODUCTION: Educational television programs serve as a potentially accessible learning medium for digitally disadvantaged students, yet the factors shaping their behavioral intention to use such programs remain underexplored. Grounded in the Unified Theory of Technology Acceptance and Use 2 (UTAUT2), this study investigates what drives digitally disadvantaged students to form intentions around using educational television programming. METHODS: Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was employed as the analytical approach to examine the relationships among seven UTAUT2

Silver Tales: A quantitative content analysis on the representation of older characters in children's television.

This paper addresses how often and how diversely older characters are being represented in children's television. A quantitative content analysis of 653 episodes (182 h) was conducted, selecting eight content providers to address the Flemish television market. It entailed three local broadcasters (Ketnet, Studio 100 Television, and VTM KIDS), three transnational players (Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, and Disney Channel), and two streaming services (Netflix and Disney+). Programs were recorded during August 2022, October 2022, and March 2023 to account for distinct programming waves. The findin

Exposure to tobacco imagery in streaming television is associated with increased intentions to smoke and vape.

INTRODUCTION: Streaming platforms have changed the way we watch television. Although previous research has established a causal relationship between tobacco exposure on-screen and tobacco use, it's unclear whether changes in the media environment brought about by streaming have altered this process. We hypothesize that youth and young adult's intentions to use cigarettes and e-cigarettes in the future will be positively associated with greater exposure to tobacco imagery in streaming television. METHODS: A content analysis identifying the amount of tobacco imagery in 60 popular streaming show

Mediating effect of eating pattern on the relationship between television exposure and caries in children.

Behavioral characteristics may also take part in the etiology of dental caries. Sedentary behavior, especially watching television, is associated with increased intake of foods high in fat or free sugar, which could influence the occurrence of dental caries. The aim of this study was to assess the mediating effect of eating pattern on the relationship between television exposure time and the presence of dental caries in children. A cross-sectional study was conducted with a representative sample of 580 parent-child dyads with children aged 7 to 8 years in 20 public schools in Pelotas, Brazil.

Tune out and turn in: the influence of television viewing and sleep on lipid profiles in children.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Physical activity is beneficial to lipid profiles; however, the association between sedentary behavior and sleep and pediatric dyslipidemia remains unclear. We aimed to investigate whether sedentary behavior or sleep predicted lipid profiles in children over a 2-year period. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Six hundered and thirty children from the QUALITY cohort, with at least one obese parent, were assessed prospectively at ages 8-10 and 10-12 years. Measures of sedentary behavior included self-reported TV viewing and computer/video game use. Seven-day accelerometry was used to deri

Television viewing and time spent sedentary in relation to cancer risk: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Sedentary behavior is emerging as an independent risk factor for chronic disease and mortality. However, the evidence relating television (TV) viewing and other sedentary behaviors to cancer risk has not been quantitatively summarized. METHODS: We performed a comprehensive electronic literature search in Cochrane, EMBASE, Medline, and SciSearch databases through February 2014 for published articles investigating sedentary behavior in relation to cancer incidence. Because randomized controlled trials are difficult to perform on this topic, we focused on observational studies that m

Children and television tipovers: a significant and preventable cause of long-term neurological deficits.

OBJECT: Television tipover has recently been recognized as a significant cause of injury in children, and head injury accounts for most of the associated deaths. The authors reviewed their experience with children who sustained head injury from falling televisions. METHODS: Children admitted with the diagnosis of head injury related to falling televisions since 1992 were identified from the authors' trauma database, and a retrospective review of the medical records was performed. Eighteen patients were identified: 13 boys and five girls whose ages ranged from 12 months to 10 years (mean 44 mo

The effect of television frame rate on EEG abnormalities in photosensitive and pattern-sensitive epilepsy.

PURPOSE: Seizures provoked by television viewing may be triggered by patterns in the television image or by flicker from the display itself. We examined the incidence of EEG abnormalities elicited by patterns displayed on television sets with two different frame rates to evaluate the likely contribution of photosensitive and pattern-sensitive mechanisms to television- and video-game epilepsy. METHODS: Televisions with frame rates of 50 and 100 Hz were used to present 35 patients who were photosensitive or pattern-sensitive with grating patterns. These patterns comprised vertical square-wave a

House: Practical Abilities Represented on Television and Impact on mEdical Students ('House PARTIES').

INTRODUCTION: Medical dramas, such as House, often depict exaggerated skills and procedures that may influence medical students' perceptions of health care. The true extent to which doctors' competencies are exaggerated is unknown. The aim of this study was to assess the practical skills demonstrated in House and consider how these depictions could contribute to unrealistic professional identity formation amongst medical students. METHODS: An observational study of season one of House was undertaken. Three reviewers, all senior medical trainees, independently analysed 22 episodes to identify

Sedentary behavior from television watching elevates GlycA levels: A bidirectional Mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: Current evidence linking sedentary behavior (SB), physical activity (PA), and inflammation raises questions about their causal relationships, prompting concerns about potential residual confounding or reverse causation. METHODS: A bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was conducted. SB data (n = 408,815) from "computer use," "television watching," and "driving" were included. The PA data encompassed nine types of PA (n = 460,376) over the last four weeks and included data on the frequency of vigorous PA (n = 440,512) and moderate PA (n = 440,266) for over 10 min. Add

Suicidal behaviours in Pakistani Urdu television dramas: a 12-year media content analysis.

BACKGROUND: Pakistani television dramas often depict scenes involving suicide that may affect the psychological wellbeing of viewers. We aimed to examine the effects of suicide depiction in Pakistani television dramas on their viewers. METHODS: In April 2023, we searched the YouTube website for Urdu-language television dramas released between 2011 and 2022 that contained scenes of suicidal behaviours (both attempts and completed suicides) using the keywords 'suicide in Pakistani dramas'. Data extracted included details of the characters involved including age group, sex, role, occupation, rel

Patient Understanding of Oncology Clinical Trial Endpoints in Direct-to-Consumer Television Advertising.

BACKGROUND: This study examined how people interpret overall survival (OS), overall response rate (ORR), and progression-free survival (PFS) endpoints in the context of direct-to-consumer television ads. Although there is little research on this topic, initial evidence suggests that people can misinterpret these endpoints. We hypothesized that understanding of ORR and PFS would be improved by adding a disclosure ("We currently do not know if [Drug] helps patients live longer") to ORR and PFS claims. METHODS: We conducted 2 online studies with US adults examining television ads for fictional p
