Spatial and temporal heterogeneity of superficial muscle strain during in situ fixed-end contractions.

Numerical models of contracting muscle offer a powerful tool to study local mechanical load. For validation of these models, the spatial and temporal distribution of strain was quantified in fixed-end contracting rat tibialis anterior muscle in situ at optimal muscle length (L(o)) and at 120 degrees plantar flexion as well as at 125 and 33Hz stimulation frequency. We studied the hypothesis that after termination of stimulation in situ muscle segments near the motor endplates elongate while segments away from the endplates shorten. We show that both spatial and temporal inhomogeneities in muscl

Temporal muscle thickness is associated with immunotherapy outcomes in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Reduced skeletal muscle mass may impair outcomes of immune checkpoint inhibitors in recurrent or metastatic head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. We evaluated whether temporal muscle thickness (TMT) on routine head computed tomography was associated with treatment response and survival. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 109 patients treated with nivolumab or pembrolizumab between 2017 and 2023 (89 men [81.7%], 20 women [18.3%]; median age 69 years [range 21-88]). TMT was measured on CT images at the level where the Sylvian fissure was most clearly visualized, perpendicular to

Temporal muscle thickness as a feasible sarcopenia marker and outcome predictor after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Sarcopenia has already been investigated as a prognostic marker for many different cancerous and non-cancerous diseases to prognosticate the clinical course. While being a sarcopenia marker, temporal muscle thickness (TMT) has gained increasing interest in recent years as a potential outcome predictor. The aim of this retrospective study was to investigate the association between TMT and the neurological outcome of patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). METHODS: A retrospective database consisting of consecutive aSAH cases treated from 01/2003 to 06/2

Temporalis Muscle Flap for Reconstruction Following Lateral Temporal Bone Resection: Anatomical Study and Technical Note.

There are no standardized guidelines for reconstructive surgery of large temporal bone defects following lateral temporal bone resection for external auditory (acoustic) meatus carcinoma. Filling the defect with well-vascularized tissue is important for large tissue defects to promote wound healing and prevent infection postoperatively. Patients with malignant tumors of the external acoustic meatus requiring lateral temporal bone resection may sometimes necessitate postoperative adjuvant chemoradiotherapy. Therefore, it is essential to facilitate wound healing and initiate adjuvant therapy pro

Biomechanical Principles of Temporal Muscle Activation in Functional Movements: Implications for Stability and Movement Coordination.

Temporal coordination of muscle activation is a key determinant of mechanical control in functional movements such as lifting, gait, and sit-to-stand transitions. Although electromyography (EMG) research has traditionally emphasized amplitude-based measures, temporal features-including activation onset, offset, sequencing, and burst duration-provide essential insight into neuromechanical strategies governing joint moment generation, load regulation, and movement stability. This narrative review synthesizes evidence from peer-reviewed studies published between 1990 and 2025 to examine temporal

Temporal behavior of exercise oscillatory ventilation and respiratory muscle performance in patients with heart failure.

BACKGROUND: Exercise oscillatory ventilation (EOV) is a negative prognostic marker in patients with heart failure (HF). EOV can either disappear (D-EOV) or persist (P-EOV) during exercise, with each showing different clinical implications. The relationship between respiratory muscle weakness and EOV persistence is not well understood, and its impact on exercise performance and muscle function in HF patients needs further exploration. METHODS: This study included 98 clinically stable HF patients with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), all undergoing cardiopulmonary exercise tes

Temporal fossa radio- and sonoanatomy revisited: a multimodal approach to standardizing temporalis muscle thickness measurement.

Temporalis muscle thickness (TMT) has gained increasing importance as a parameter for predicting sarcopenia, dysphagia, and functional outcomes, particularly in cranial pathologies such as stroke. However, the complex anatomy of the temporal fossa presents a significant challenge for the reliable assessment of TMT. This review aims to overcome this difficulty by providing a comprehensive analysis of the sonoanatomy and radiologic structure of the temporal fossa. Detailed anatomical relationship, including fascial planes, fat pads, and bony structures are presented with high-resolution images a

Temporal relationship between sleep-time masseter muscle activity and apnea-hypopnea events: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common sleep disorder due mainly to peripheral causes, characterized by repeated episodes of obstruction of the upper airways, associated with arousals and snoring. Sleep bruxism (SB) is a masticatory muscle activity during sleep that is characterized as rhythmic (phasic) or nonrhythmic (tonic) and is not a movement disorder or a sleep disorder in otherwise healthy individuals. Given the potentially severe consequences and complications of apnea, the concurrent high prevalence of SB in daily dental practice, getting deeper into the correlat

Value of temporal muscle thickness in predicting outcomes of stroke: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: This systematic review examined if temporal muscle thickness (TMT) as a surrogate marker of sarcopenia was a predictor of outcomes after stroke. METHODS: We explored the PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science databases till 18th January 2025 for studies reporting stroke prognosis based on baseline TMT. Pooled analyses examined associations with post-stroke mortality, functional outcomes, and dysphagia. Meta-regression was conducted using baseline NIHSS and TMT values as moderators. RESULTS: Nine studies were available. Meta-analysis showed that low TMT was associated with a st

Interplay between Pitx2 and Pax7 temporally governs specification of extraocular muscle stem cells.

Gene regulatory networks that act upstream of skeletal muscle fate determinants are distinct in different anatomical locations. Despite recent efforts, a clear understanding of the cascade of events underlying the emergence and maintenance of the stem cell pool in specific muscle groups remains unresolved and debated. Here, we invalidated Pitx2 with multiple Cre-driver mice prenatally, postnatally, and during lineage progression. We showed that this gene becomes progressively dispensable for specification and maintenance of the muscle stem (MuSC) cell pool in extraocular muscles (EOMs) despite

Mechanisms underlying stabilization of temporally summated muscle contractions in the lobster (Panulirus) pyloric system.

Muscles are the final effectors of behavior. The neural basis of behavior therefore cannot be completely understood without a description of the transfer function between neural output and muscle contraction. To this end, we have been studying muscle contraction in the well-investigated lobster pyloric system. We report here the mechanisms underlying stabilization of temporally summating contractions of the very slow dorsal dilator muscle in response to motor nerve stimulation with trains of rhythmic shock bursts at a physiological intraburst spike frequency (60 Hz), physiological cycle period
