Physiotherapy as an adjuvant therapy for treatment of TMJ disorders.

Physiotherapy has long been used to cure joint and muscle diseases. It has also been used to treat various diseases without inflicting mental trauma or the pain of surgery. This adjunctive therapeutic modality is widely used for patients with orofacial disorders, especially in the prevention or treatment of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder, hypomobility, or ankylosis. Physiotherapy has a particular importance in the treatment of TMJ disorders such as myofascial pain and internal derangement. This review article highlights the importance of physiotherapy as an emerging adjuvant therapy in

Whiplash and temporomandibular disorders: a critical review.

Some authors have hypothesized a relationship between rear-impact motor vehicle collisions and subsequent symptoms of neck pain and temporomandibular disorders, or TMD, despite no facial impact. This article examines the TMD aspect in terms of the physiological basis and cultural factors influencing the reporting of such symptoms.

Arthritis of the temporomandibular joints.

The most common disease of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is osteoarthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis may also involve this joint. Other diseases that may occasionally affect the TMJ include familial Mediterranean fever, systemic lupus erythematosus, gout, Sjögren's syndrome and infectious arthritis. Many cases of TMJ syndrome are labeled as idiopathic facial pain syndrome, a category that probably represents a number of different entities. The role of dental malocclusion has been greatly overemphasized in the past.

[Zygomatic arch fracture extended to the glenoid fossa: a cause of TMJ pain].

INTRODUCTION: Fractures of the zygomatic arch extended to the glenoid fossa are rare and seldom reported. OBSERVATION: A 26-year-old man with a slightly dislocated fracture of the zygoma associated with trismus, and localized pain in the right Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ) on palpation, but without any condylar fracture. The craniofacial CT scan revealed a fracture of the zygoma extended to the glenoid fossa. The treatment was an intraoral reduction of the zygoma and screw fixation of the glenoid fossa lateral region. DISCUSSION: The risk of delayed healing by mobilization of the bone fragm

[Importance of diagnosis in facial pain].

The diagnosis and treatment of facial pain remains a great challenge for oral and maxillofacial surgeons. By taking an exact anamnesis--especially a pain anamnesis--and by starting specific examinations the patient can quickly be recommended to a qualified therapist. The pain syndromes are classified according to the IASP (International Association for the Study of Pain). The pain syndromes the maxillofacial surgeon is most frequently confronted with--idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia, atypical facial pain and the temporomandibular joint--are described. The necessity of a multidisciplinary exami

Efficacy of the use of chondroitin sulphate and glucosamine for the treatment of temporomandibular joint dysfunction: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of chondroitin sulfate (CS) and glucosamine (GS), the most relevant drugs of "Symptomatic Slow Acting Drug for Osteoarthritis" (SYSADOA), in the functional and symptomatic improvement of temporomandibular dysfunction. Although, controversy exists regarding their benefit. METHODS: An electronic search was conducted to retrieve randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs). The risk of bias assessment was evaluated using the Cochrane Collaboration's tool. Data were meta-analyzed with a random effect model whenever possible. RESULTS: Three RCTs were included.

Temporomandibular joint disorder and inner ear pruritus: resolution by eminectomy.

Recurrent dislocation of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disk is caused by many factors. Dislocation can result in an acute or chronic closed lock condition. Temporomandibular joint dysfunction is often presented with otalgia symptoms. Other aural symptoms such as deafness, tinnitus, pressure/blockage, and vertigo are also commonly presented together with TMJ dysfunction (Clin Otolaryngol Allied Sci. 1980;5:23-36). However, pruritus associated with TMJ dysfunction in the inner ear has never been reported in the literature. We report a case history of TMJ dysfunction and associated inner ear

Qualitative and quantitative assessment of headaches in people with temporomandibular joint disorders: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Headaches (HAs) and temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD) are common comorbidities, and the presence of one of them in a patient increases the incidence of the other. The relationship between these 2 conditions may involve common pathophysiological processes. Considering the topicality of the problem, it is justified to conduct research in this field. In this study, we assessed HA type and severity in people with TMD. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to conduct qualitative and quantitative assessments of HAs in people with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. MATERIAL

TMD and chronic pain: a current view.

This review aims at presenting a current view on the physiopathologic mechanisms associated with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). While joint pain is characterized by a well-defined inflammatory process mediated by tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin, chronic muscle pain presents with enigmatic physiopathologic mechanisms, being considered a functional pain syndrome similar to fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, interstitial cystitis and chronic fatigue syndrome. Central sensitization is the common factor unifying these conditions, and may be influenced by the autonomic nervous syst

Improving TMD classification using the Delphi technique.

The classification of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) is still controversial. Consensus methods such as the Delphi technique, a method that polls experts' anonymous opinion in an iterative process with controlled feedback and statistical aggregation of group response, could be valuable to improve this challenging topic. The article illustrates the application of the Delphi technique for deciding whether the terms myalgia or myofascial pain should be used in a TMD classification system and discusses the technique's potential for TMD classification in general. In three Delphi rounds, 14 TMD ex

[Evaluation of the status of the stomatognathic system in patients with idiopathic headaches].

The stomatognathic system was assessed in 114 subjects with various types of idiopathic headaches. Stomatognathic system dysfunctions were recognized most frequently in patients with atypical facial pain and headache, and with mixed headache. Much less frequently these dysfunctions were present in patients with migraine or cluster headaches. The obtained results suggest that stomatognathic system dysfunctions should be considered in the pathogenesis of certain headaches.
