Asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation and multi-angle laser light scattering: A new analytical approach for the characterisation of insect protein aggregation/polymerisation after heat treatment of Tenebrio molitor larvae.

Understanding the structural modifications of insect proteins during the transformation processes used for extract preparation is essential for optimising their functionalities and obtaining high added-value proteins. From this perspective and in addition to classical analytical approaches, we developed an original methodology based on the implementation of Asymmetrical Flow Field-Flow Fractionation and Multi-Angle Laser Light Scattering (A4F-MALLS) coupling to quantify and characterise the aggregation/polymerisation phenomena of Tenebrio molitor larvae proteins after heat treatment (from 65 t

Low inclusion levels of Tenebrio molitor larvae meal in laying Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica, Gould, 1837) diet improve the intestinal morphometry, enzymatic activity and caecal short chain fatty acids profile.

One hundred twenty, 12 weeks old laying Japanese quails (JQ) were equally divided into 4 groups (6 replicates of 5 birds/group). The control group (CON) fed a corn-soybean diet; TML1.4, TML2.8, and TML5.6 groups fed a diet where a Tenebrio molitor larvae meal (TML) was included at 1.4, 2.8, and 5.6%, respectively. The trial lasted 54 days. The villi height (VH) and the crypt depth (CD) linearly decreased from the control to the TML5.6 group (P < 0.01) in the duodenum, while an opposite trend was observed for the Ab+ mucous cells count (P < 0.01). The highest VH/CD ratio was found in the TML1.4

Tenebrionicola larvae gen. nov., sp. nov., isolated from larvae of mealworm Tenebrio molitor L., and a proposal to transfer Erwinia teleogrylli Liu et al. 2016 to a new genus Entomohabitans as Entomohabitans teleogrylli comb. nov.

Two enterobacterial strains, designated YMB-R21T and YMB-R22, were isolated from larvae of mealworm Tenebrio molitor L. and examined for their taxonomic characteristics. A 16S rRNA gene-based neighbour-joining tree showed that the two isolates formed two distinct sublineages within the family Enterobacteriaceae and were separated from other genera of the family. The isolates showed 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 98.9 % to each other and ≤96.5 % to members of the order Enterobacteriales. The phylogenomic analysis based on 92 singly-copy core genes showed that the two isolates belonged to

An illustrated guide to dissection and abdominal anatomy of the yellow mealworm beetle.

An unprecedented increase in the number and the size of yellow mealworm beetle (Tenebrio molitor) farms in North America and Europe has been driven, among other factors, by the demand for sustainable proteins. Insect farming offers ecologic advantages, including lower land and water use and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. As in conventional livestock farming, veterinarians are essential to maintain insect health because disease outbreaks can reduce productivity, compromise animal welfare, and cause monetary loss. Yet, the role of veterinary diagnosticians remains limited in this emerging sec

Oxidative Enhancement of Polystyrene Bioconversion Associated with Bio-Fenton-Type Processes in a Mesocosm-Scale Plastivore System.

Sustainable plastic waste management calls for mesocosm-scale biological strategies coupling polymer depolymerization with controlled plastic-carbon transformation, yet routes for optimizing plastivore-mediated bioconversion beyond laboratory scale remain poorly defined. Here, we establish a mesocosm-scale plastivore-based platform using Tenebrio molitor larvae and show that moderate Fe supplementation increased the •OH-associated oxidative activity, accompanied by enhanced polystyrene (PS) depolymerization and PS disappearance. Under a simplified incineration-reference scenario, the estimated

Population Growth of Three Stored Product Beetle Species on Alphitobius diaperinus (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) Meals.

The lesser mealworm, Alphitobius diaperinus (Panzer) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), is an important pest of stored products and at the same time a species with great potential as food and feed that has recently attracted increasing interest as nutrient source. Future predictions show a massive increase of insect meals' production in the near future, therefore, as expected in the case of other durable stored products, insect meals may get infested by insects during their storage. In this context and as a continuance of our previous study on the susceptibility of meal of the yellow mealworm, Teneb

Demographic parameters and asynchronous ovary development in Eocanthecona furcellata (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) reared on different diets.

The stink bug, Eocanthecona furcellata Wolff (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) shows significant promise as a biological control agent against lepidopteran pests in tropical and subtropical areas. However, securing suitable food remains a persistent issue for the mass rearing of this beneficial insect. To understand how different feeding strategies impact reproductive success, we evaluated their effects on critical life table parameters and ovary development using a range of feeding options: natural prey Spodoptera litura Fabricius (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and Spodoptera exigua Hubner, alternative pre

Effect of Diets with the Addition of Edible Insects on the Development of Atherosclerotic Lesions in ApoE/LDLR-/- Mice.

Foods enriched with insects can potentially prevent several health disorders, including cardiovascular diseases, by reducing inflammation and improving antioxidant status. In this study, Tenebrio molitor and Gryllus assimilis were selected to determine the effect on the development of atherosclerosis in ApoE/LDLR-/- mice. Animals were fed AIN-93G-based diets (control) with 10% Tenebrio molitor (TM) and 10% Gryllus assimilis (GA) for 8 weeks. The nutritional value as well as antioxidant activity of selected insects were determined. The lipid profile, liver enzyme activity, and the fatty acid co

Genomics and Virulence of Fonsecaea pugnacius, Agent of Disseminated Chromoblastomycosis.

Among agents of chromoblastomycosis, Fonsecaea pugnacius presents a unique type of infection because of its secondary neurotropic dissemination from a chronic cutaneous case in an immunocompetent patient. Neurotropism occurs with remarkable frequency in the fungal family Herpotrichiellaceae, possibly associated with the ability of some species to metabolize aromatic hydrocarbons. In an attempt to understand this new disease pattern, were conducted genomic analysis of Fonsecaea pugnacius (CBS 139214) performed with de novo assembly, gene prediction, annotation and mitochondrial genome assembly,

Venoms with oral toxicity towards insects.

Animal venoms are a promising source of potential bioinsecticides. To find hits with pronounced oral insect toxicity, we screened 82 venoms using Achroia grisella (Lepidoptera) and Tenebrio molitor (Coleoptera) larvae, and adult Drosophila melanogaster (Diptera). We also injected the most potent venoms in adult D. melanogaster to compare their efficiency in different routes of administration. 18 venoms from spiders and snakes show high oral toxicity and can be further exploited to isolate new insecticides.

A Plastivore Gut System Enables In Vivo Biotransformation and Partial Defluorination of Perfluorooctanoic Acid.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are highly persistent contaminants that resist biological degradation, hindering the development of sustainable remediation strategies. Here we reveal that plastivorous Tenebrio molitor larvae mediate gut-driven biotransformation and partial defluorination of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in vivo. Over 15 days, the apparent loss of extractable parent PFOA was 47.9% and 41.2% in the 0.5 g kg-1 and 20 g kg-1 PFOA dietary treatments, respectively. Control-corrected inorganic fluoride recovered from larval tissues and frass, together with the identificati

No longer uncertain: the validation of tenebrionid insects as hosts of Blattambidensovirus incertum1 isolates by phylogeny and infection studies.

The mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) is one of the most commonly mass-reared insects for food and feed. Monitoring the health status of commercially reared mealworm populations is of great importance for the early detection of entomopathogens and for preventing pathogen outbreaks. Metagenomic screening is a suitable and commonly used method for detecting entomopathogens. The approach used here previously enabled the discovery of the Tenebrio molitor densovirus (TmDV) (family Parvoviridae, subfamily Densovirinae) in symptomatic larvae. In the present study, the search for TmDV was extended to larvae

Insect frass fertilizer as soil amendment for improved forage and soil health in circular systems.

Insect farming is expected to increase in coming years, thus generating high quantities of frass (insect excreta). Frass valorization hinges on basic agronomic research prior to industry upscaling. Here, we investigated soil physiochemical properties, SMAF (Soil Management Assessment Framework) soil health, CO2 efflux, and bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.] yield and quality as affected by yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor L.) frass [3400 and 6800 kg ha-1, low (LF) and high (HF) rates], poultry litter (PL; 3400 kg ha-1), and ammonium nitrate (AN; 67 kg N ha-1). Rapid analysis of insecticidal metabolites from the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana 331R using UPLC-Q-Orbitrap MS.

Beauveria bassiana, a representative entomopathogenic fungus, is increasingly being utilized as an eco-friendly pest management alternative to chemical insecticides. This fungus produces a range of insecticidal secondary metabolites that act as antimicrobial and immunosuppressive agents. However, detailed qualitative and quantitative analysis related to these compounds remains scarce, we developed a method for the rapid analysis of these metabolites. Eight secondary metabolites (bassianin, bassianolide, beauvericin, beauveriolide I, enniatin A, A1, and B, and tenellin) were efficiently extract

Toxicity of scorpion venom in chick embryo and mealworm assay depending on the use of the soluble fraction versus the whole venom.

The LD50 is an important metric for venom studies and antivenom development. It has been shown that several variables in the protocol influence the LD50 value obtained, such as venom source, extraction and treatment and administration route. These inconsistencies reduce the utility of the results of these test for comparative studies. In scorpion venom LD50 assays, often only the soluble fraction of the venom is used, whereas other studies use the whole venom. We here tested the toxicity of the soluble fraction in isolation, and of the whole venom in two different systems: chick embryos and me

Comparison of the peptidome and insecticidal activity of venom from a taxonomically diverse group of theraphosid spiders.

We screened a panel of theraphosid venoms in two orders of insect in order to determine whether these bioassays would help in the selection of candidate venoms for future discovery of insecticidal toxins. Venoms from six different theraphosid genera were compared with venom from the Australian funnel-web spider Hadronyche infensa (Hexathelidae). The tarantulas included were Coremiocnemis tropix, Selenocosmia crossipes, and Selenotholus foelschei from Australia and Brachypelma albiceps and Brachypelma hamorii from Mexico. Occupational allergic disease in cereal workers by stored grain pests.

It is well known that workers occupationally exposed to grain dust have a high prevalence of respiratory symptoms, but their pathogenesis remains obscure when sensitization to cereal flour cannot be demonstrated. Storage mites, tenebroids, and cockroaches are stored-grain pests found in grain and cereal products frequently in our area, where the cereal industry is the most important industry. An epidemiological analysis of sensitization of these stored-grain pests was performed on 4379 patients residing in an area of cereal industries. Fifty grain workers were selected for in vivo diagnostic t

From insects to mammals! Tissue accumulation and transgenerational transfer of micro/nano-plastics through the food chain.

Despite extensive global attention on microplastic pollution, our understanding of the pathways underlying microplastic translocation, accumulation, and their potential impacts on ecosystems and human health through the food chain remains incomplete. To investigate the translocation and accumulation of microplastics from insects to mammals, we developed a novel oral exposure model that Tenebrio molitor larvae (yellow mealworms, invertebrate terrestrial insects) were firstly orally exposed to both micro and nanometer-sized plastics (M/NPs), and subsequently fed as a food source to mice (mammals

Quantitative structure-activity relationship of insect juvenile hormone mimetic compounds.

Juvenile hormone mimetic activities on Aedes aegypti (yellow-fever mosquito) and Tenebrio molitor (yellow mealworm) of compounds having (2E,4E)-3,7,11-trimethyl-2,4-dodecadienone structures were comparatively and quantitatively analyzed in terms of their physiochemical structural parameters and by regression analysis. They were structurally composed of three classes, ester and thiol ester derivatives, amides, and ketones, depending on the C1 substituents. The results indicated that the steric dimensions and the hydrophobicity of the whole molecule are important factors in governing the activit
