The effect of total parenteral nutrition on the survival of terminally ill ovarian cancer patients.

OBJECTIVES: Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) for terminal ovarian cancer patients remains controversial. In this study, we compared survival from time of terminal intestinal obstruction (TIO) diagnosis in patients who received TPN versus those who did not. METHODS: A historical cohort of 55 patients with stage IIIC/IV epithelial ovarian cancer hospitalized for TIO between 1994 and 2002 was studied. All patients were previously treated with paclitaxel/platinum following cytoreductive surgery. Exposure was administration of TPN after TIO. The primary outcome was survival from TIO diagnosis to d

Assisted dying in practice: Australian lessons for the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill.

This editorial draws on clinical experience with Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) in Western Australia to critically examine the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill. It compares the legislative approaches and examines the three key eligibility criteria: Terminal Illness (clause 2), Capacity (clause 3), and Coercion (clause 7). Concerns include prognostic accuracy, assessment setting, and structural coercion. Recommendations include independent life expectancy evaluations, outpatient based assessments, and early mandatory palliative care and social work involvement. Transparency about societ

Exploring Home-Visit Rehabilitation for Terminally Ill Patients With Cancer: Insights From Japanese Care Managers.

BACKGROUND: Care managers (CMs) play a vital role in planning, managing, providing family support, and coordinating services for individuals in need, particularly in the field of palliative care. To implement home-visit rehabilitation for terminally ill patients with cancer effectively, it is essential for the care plan created by the CM to be incorporated into the system. Collaboration with the CM is key to ensuring the successful implementation of rehabilitation. Despite this necessity, there is a lack of studies investigating the background and challenges preventing progress in this area. T

Resilience and coping styles in family caregivers of terminally ill patients: A cross-sectional survey.

OBJECTIVES: Coping styles can be improved by dyadic palliative care interventions and may alleviate patients' and family caregivers' distress. Moreover, family caregivers' preloss resilience protects against depression after bereavement. This study aimed to determine the types of coping styles can be encouraged to increase resilience. METHODS: A self-reported questionnaire survey was administered to family caregivers at the 4 palliative care units, and their resilience was assessed using the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) and their coping styles were assessed using the Brief Copin

The Impact of Aging on Symptom Prevalence and Management in Terminally ill Patients With Cancer.

CONTEXT: With global population aging, the number of older patients with cancer is increasing. However, few data are available on palliative care for these patients. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate differences in symptom prevalence and the need for medical interventions among patients of different ages in a palliative care unit. METHODS: In this retrospective analysis, a consecutive sample of 1032 terminally ill patients with cancer were categorized into the following age ranges: <70, 70-79, 80-89, and ≥90 years. We evaluated symptom prevalence, the need for palliative medicines, opioid dose on the

[A study of 31 terminally ill cancer patients who received pure oxycodone injections at home].

Since the launch of pure oxycodone injections in May 2012, it has been possible to use oxycodone without opioid rotation. Although an extremely important step showing progress, very few studies regarding the use of pure oxycodone injections have been performed. In this study, we evaluated the safety and efficacy of pure oxycodone injections in 31 terminally ill cancer patients receiving home care. The difficulty in oral oxycodone intake was the main reason for changing to pure oxycodone injections. The mean administered period of subcutaneous pure oxycodone was 5.6 ± 6.7 days. Silent wounds: violence and adverse experiences in parents caring for terminally ill children in palliative care.

BACKGROUND: Primary caregivers of paediatric palliative care patients-mostly women-are disproportionately exposed to adverse events and violence, both directly related to the experience of disease and to other stressful life events. These experiences have been associated with a higher risk of psychopathology, which in turn impacts the children under their care. The purpose of this study was to describe the experiences of violence among primary caregivers of palliative care patients in a children's hospital in Mexico City and to analyse how these experiences affect their caregiving capacity. Nurses' Experiences of Grief Care for Terminally Ill Cancer Patients and Their Families: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Grief care is a vital yet emotionally demanding component of end-of-life nursing for patients with terminal cancer, with significant implications for family and community well-being. In Jordanian private hospitals, cultural sensitivities surrounding death and limited formal grief-care education may challenge nurses' ability to support patients and families effectively, with implications for sustainable healthcare practice. PURPOSE: This study explored nurses' experiences of grief care work with dying patients and their families from a community health nursing perspective in a Jord

Association of Systemic Inflammation with Nocturnal Sleeping Time Among Terminally Ill Patients with Cancer: Preliminary Findings.

Objectives: Evidence regarding the impacts of systemic inflammation on nocturnal sleep in advanced cancer patients is limited. We determined the association of serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels with sleep in patients with non-imminent and those with imminent death. Methods: This was a secondary analysis of an observational study conducted in patients newly referred to a palliative care unit. Nocturnal sleep was assessed based on the "sleeping time" measured using a sheet-type non-wearable sensor. Patients were divided into long-survival and short-survival groups depending on the median sur

Decline of Physical Activity in Terminally Ill Patients Could Be Useful for Predicting Short-Term Survival.

BACKGROUND: Although it is recommended that all terminally ill patients receive advance care planning (ACP), this is occasionally challenging because of the difficulty in predicting survival. There are some indexes for predicting survival, but few are accurate, especially at the terminal stages of illness. METHODS: Twenty-two patients at the terminal stages of cancer were retrospectively analyzed. We assessed their physical activity and condition using activities of daily living (ADL) scores for 1 month before the death. The ADL scores included 7 items: walking, bathing, grooming, dressing, e

Associations of interleukin-6 with vegetative but not affective depressive symptoms in terminally ill cancer patients.

PURPOSE: Previous studies have reported associations of depressive symptoms with pro-inflammatory cytokines, especially with interleukin-6 (IL-6) in noncancer subjects and cancer patients. Meanwhile, symptoms such as tiredness and appetite loss may be vegetative symptoms of depression when associated with other diagnostic criteria of depression. Such vegetative-type symptoms worsen during the last 6 months of life in cancer patients and may not be associated with affective depressive symptoms such as sadness and nervousness. This study explored associations between depressive symptoms and plas

The relationship between interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-α, and fatigue in terminally ill cancer patients.

Although many cancer patients receiving palliative care experience distressing levels of fatigue, no well-designed studies have investigated contributing factors in Korean patients. We conducted a cross-sectional study using the Brief Fatigue Inventory-K (BFI-K) to measure fatigue while assessing a variety of possible correlates. Ninety patients with incurable cancer in the terminal stage (median survival: 27 days) participated in a structured interview and questionnaire related to their medical conditions and underwent blood sampling for laboratory data and cytokines, including interleukin (I

Living with a terminal illness: patients' priorities.

BACKGROUND: Our understanding of terminal illness and its consequences has been predominantly based on models derived from expert definition, rather than the patient's perspective. More recently, quality of life tools have been developed to enable patient choice in responses. However, an even broader approach may be needed to help identify goals for care for patients who are terminally ill. AIM: The aim of this paper is to report on an exploratory, qualitative study exploring what people living with terminal illness considered were the areas of priority in their lives. METHODS: Ten people li

End-of-life care among terminally ill patients in the emergency department: a best practice implementation project.

INTRODUCTION: The increasing number of older adults visiting emergency departments (EDs) near the end of life highlights the need for palliative and end-of-life care in this setting, despite the ED's focus on acute care. AIM: This study implemented evidence-based end-of-life care for terminally ill adult patients in the ED in a medical center in Shanghai, China. METHODS: This project followed JBI Evidence Implementation Framework. A baseline audit was conducted to measure current practices against best practice recommendations. Barriers to evidence-based practices were identified, improvemen

Barriers to Palliative Care for Terminally Ill Children in a Developing Country Cancer Hospital: A Qualitative Study.

INTRODUCTION: Pediatric palliative care (PPC) aims to improve the quality of life for children with life-limiting illnesses and support their families by addressing physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs. Globally, significant barriers to PPC delivery include limited integration into health systems, inadequate provider training, restricted access to pain medications, and communication challenges. These issues are particularly pronounced in low- and middle-income countries, where cultural, infrastructural, and resource constraints further complicate care. Despite growing recogniti

Exploring perspectives of Scottish medical students on the proposed 'Assisted Dying for Terminally Ill Adults (Scotland)' Bill.

BACKGROUND: The debate over legalising assisted dying is complex and multifaceted, eliciting strong and diverse opinions from all involved parties. Recently, the Scottish Parliament held an initial vote on the issue, opting to progress with proposed legislation. Hearing the perspectives of medical students, as future clinicians, is crucial when considering new medico-legal developments in assisted dying in Scotland. This study aimed to explore and examine medical students' views on assisted dying in Scotland and the specific provisions of the proposed Scottish legislation. METHODS: An online
