Differences in individual-level terrorism preparedness in Los Angeles County.

BACKGROUND: Increasing individual preparedness for disasters, including large-scale terrorist attacks, is a significant concern of public health planners. As with natural disasters, individuals can help protect their health and safety by preparing for the emergency situation that may follow a terrorist event. Our study describes variations in preparedness among the population of Los Angeles County after the September 11, 2001 and subsequent anthrax attacks. METHODS: In 2004, the data were analyzed from the Los Angeles County Health Survey, a random-digit-dialed telephone survey of the non-ins

Association of sleep terror, walking or talking and tinnitus.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Sleep disturbances are associated with chronic tinnitus in humans. However, whether parasomnias are associated with chronic tinnitus is unclear. This study aims to investigate this issue. METHODS: Clinical data for 2907 subjects who had visited the Sleep Center of a community hospital in Taiwan during November 2011 to June 2017 were collected retrospectively. The association of chronic tinnitus with sleep terror, sleep walking, and sleep talking was analyzed using Pearson's Chi-Square test and multivariate logistic regression. RESULTS: The cohort age ranged from 7 to 91 y

Terror medicine as part of the medical school curriculum.

Terror medicine, a field related to emergency and disaster medicine, focuses on medical issues ranging from preparedness to psychological manifestations specifically associated with terrorist attacks. Calls to teach aspects of the subject in American medical schools surged after the 2001 jetliner and anthrax attacks. Although the threat of terrorism persists, terror medicine is still addressed erratically if at all in most medical schools. This paper suggests a template for incorporating the subject throughout a 4-year medical curriculum. The instructional framework culminates in a short cours

Auditory evoked potentials in narcolepsy and sleep terrors.

Dysfunction of brainstem reticular activating centers has been suggested in some sleep disorders, including narcolepsy and sleep terrors. Previous studies have suggested normal brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) in narcolepsy and enhancement of long-latency auditory event-related potentials (ERPs) in sleep deprivation and conditions of pathological somnolence. Sleep terrors have not to date been studied neurophysiologically. We recorded early latency BAEPs and long-latency auditory ERPs in 8 patients with narcolepsy and 5 individuals with sleep terrors, and compared them to 10 normal

Forgiveness, coping, and terrorism: do tendency to forgive and coping strategies associate with the level of posttraumatic symptoms of injured victims of terror attacks?

OBJECTIVE: The study examined the tendency to forgive (self, others, and situations) and coping strategies (problem-focused, emotion-focused, and avoidance) among terror attack victims as associated with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptom severity. METHOD: The sample included 108 terror victims who had been injured in terror attacks (mean age 46.23, standard deviation = 11.61; 58.3% male). Participants agreed to undergo assessments of their PTSD symptoms, coping strategies, and tendency to forgive. RESULTS: A nested structural equation model design showed that tendency to forgive i

Religious Radicalization and Lone-Actor Terrorism: A Matter for Psychiatry?

This article discusses the place of the psychiatric field in the ongoing phenomenon of religious radicalization. First, the article provides an overview of the existing literature on lone-actor terrorists and the link with mental illness. Current research is focusing increasingly on lone-actor terrorists. This is the most recent and rising development on the global terrorism scene. The literature is currently developing a more precise and informed definition of lone-actor terrorism. The article then describes and discusses the case study of a mentally ill patient arrested following his assault

Coping with Fear of and Exposure to Terrorism among Expatriates.

This paper examines existing research on the impact of terrorism on expatriate coping strategies. We consider pre-assignment fear of terrorism, in-country coping strategies, and anxiety and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) associated with repatriation. The extant research is small but growing. Our model for expatriate coping at the pre-departure, in-country, and repatriation stages includes strategies specific to each stage. Preparation using proactive coping, systematic desensitization, problem and emotion focused coping, social support, and virtual reality explorations are recommended. S

Epidemiological patterns of suicide terrorism in the civilian Pakistani population.

In this study, we assessed the epidemiological patterns of suicide terrorism in the civilian population of Pakistan. Information about suicide terrorism-related events, deaths and injuries was extracted from the South-Asian Terrorism Portal (SATP) for the period from 2002 to October 2009. Of 198 events, civilians were involved in 194 events. Civilians accounted for 74.1% (N = 2017) of those who died and 93.8% (N = 6129) of those who were injured. In nine districts, mortality rates were more than one death per 100,000 inhabitants per year. The yearly trend showed a shift of attack targets from

International terrorism and mental health: recent research and future directions.

International terrorism has become a major global concern. Several studies conducted in North America and Europe in the aftermath of terrorist attacks reveal that international terrorism represents a significant short-term and long-term threat to mental health. In the present article, the authors clarify the concept and categories of terrorism and then present central findings from studies conducted in the United States and Europe, which mainly focus on negative impacts on mental health, such as emotional stress and PTSD. Furthermore, the authors outline experiments that focus on social intera

[Preparedness response to hazard and toxic incidents and food terrorism].

The nerve gas sarin has been responsible for tragic disasters in Matsumoto city, Nagano in 1994 and in the Tokyo subway system in 1995, which was a terrorist attack against non-military citizens. These chemical weapons exposures shocked the world, and have become sources of social concern. Thereafter there were several toxic substance-evoked incidents in Japan, specifically a poisoning due to curry containing arsenite at Wakayama city and foods and drinks containing other toxic chemicals. Following these tragic events, the Japanese government started to prepare a risk and medical management sy

Terrorism preparedness in state health departments--United States, 2001-2003.

The anthrax attacks in fall 2001 highlighted the role of infectious disease (ID) epidemiologists in terrorism preparedness and response. Beginning in 2002, state health departments (SHDs) received approximately 1 billion dollars in new federal funding to prepare for and respond to terrorism, infectious disease outbreaks, and other public health threats and emergencies. This funding is being used in part to improve epidemiologic and surveillance capabilities. To determine how states have used a portion of their new funding to increase ID epidemiology capacity, the Iowa Department of Public Heal

A case report of sleep terrors exacerbated by cetirizine.

Sleep terrors are a type of sleep disorder that is classified as parasomnias and is more common in children than in adults. Cetirizine is a histamine H1 antagonist that is US Food and Drug Administration approved for the treatment of allergic rhinitis and urticaria and has common adverse effects of drowsiness and headaches. We present a case of an adult man with a history of chronic sleep terror disorder and allergic rhinitis who developed worsening of his sleep terrors after initiation of cetirizine that subsequently resolved after discontinuing cetirizine and starting paroxetine.

Ethical issues in research involving victims of terror.

Although research after an episode of terror can provide important information to improve the health and well-being of present and future victims, there are unique ethical challenges that need to be addressed. Man-made disasters have profound effects on victims, rescue workers, and their families and on others in the community; this may impair their ability to provide voluntary and uncoerced decisions about research participation. Because such potential participants in research may be vulnerable and also subject to being overburdened with redundant research, they deserve special consideration.

Psychophysiological aspects of nightmares, night terrors, and sleepwalking.

Monitoring sleep through electroencephalography and electroculography has identified the different sleep stages in which nightmares, night terrors, and sleepwalking occur. Questionnaire surveys have supplemented the findings of case studies of these sleep disorders. Neurotransmitters operative during these sleep disorders have enlarged the knowledge of the psychophysiological dimensions especially of nightmares.

Clinical characteristics of a sample of 90 detainees for jihadist terrorism.

INTRODUCTION: Although research into the process of jihadist radicalization has developed in less than 10 years, few studies on the subject have been carried out by psychiatrists, and the prevalence of psychiatric disorders among people incarcerated for terrorism in France is unknown. Our objectives were to estimate the prevalence of psychiatric disorders in a sample of people incarcerated for jihadist terrorism and to characterize and compare men and women (socio-demographics, psychiatric diagnoses, trauma, substances, conversion to Islam). METHOD: Ninety adults in detention for jihadist ter
