Interactions of three benzodiazepine receptor inverse agonists with ethanol in a plus-maze test of anxiety.

The effects of RO 15-4513, RO 15-3505 and FG 7142 on the anxiolytic properties of ethanol in mice were investigated using the plus-maze test of anxiety. Before being tested on the plus-maze, the mice were tested in a holeboard apparatus. All three inverse agonists attenuated the reduction in exploration caused by ethanol in the holeboard test. In the plus-maze, only RO 15-4513 and FG 7142, which possess anxiogenic properties when administered alone, attenuated ethanol's anxiolytic effect. RO 15-3505, which alone had no effect on anxiety, failed to significantly reduce ethanol's anxiolytic effe

Altered local gyrification index and corresponding resting-state functional connectivity in individuals with high test anxiety.

Previous studies have reported that test anxiety is closely related to unreasonable cognitive patterns and maladaptive emotional responses. However, its underlying brain structural and functional basis has not been thoroughly studied. This study aimed to evaluate the potential difference in local gyration index (LGI) and corresponding resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) in individuals with high test anxiety (HTA) compared with low test anxiety (LTA). Twenty-six individuals with HTA and 28 individuals with LTA underwent T1-weighted structural and resting-state functional magnetic reson

Measures of anxiety in zebrafish (Danio rerio): dissociation of black/white preference and novel tank test.

The effects of wall color stimuli on diving, and the effects of depth stimuli on scototaxis, were assessed in zebrafish. Three groups of fish were confined to a black, a white, or a transparent tank, and tested for depth preference. Two groups of fish were confined to a deep or a shallow tank, and tested for black-white preference. As predicted, fish preferred the deep half of a split-tank over the shallow half, and preferred the black half of a black/white tank over the white half. Results indicated that the tank wall color significantly affected depth preference, with the transparent tank pr

Genetic deletion and pharmacological blockade of CB1 receptors modulates anxiety in the shock-probe burying test.

Cannabinoids affect various behavioral processes, including emotion, learning and memory, which may be specifically regulated through the CB1 receptors. The exact role CB1 receptors play in anxiety remains unclear. Both genetic and pharmacological blockade of CB1 receptors have produced inconsistent effects on anxiety. However, these studies examined passive avoidance as an index of anxiety. In the present study, both active and passive avoidance were examined using the shock-probe burying test while CB1 receptors were blocked genetically or pharmacologically. In the shock-probe burying test,

The capacity of cognitive tests to detect generalized anxiety disorder (GAD): A pilot study.

Cognitive impairment remains understudied in generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), despite the high prevalence and substantial burden associated with this disorder. We aimed to assess cognitive impairment in patients with GAD and evaluate the ability of cognitive tests to detect this disorder. Because of its high rate of comorbidity, we also examined how other anxiety disorders and current major depressive episodes affected our results. We tested 263 consecutive general practice outpatients. We used the GAD-7 and the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) to detect anxiety and mood

Testing anxiety and reward processing in anorexia nervosa as predictors of longitudinal clinical outcomes.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a psychiatric disorder with a tenuous longitudinal course marked by a high risk of relapse. Previous studies suggest that aberrant threat perception and reward processing operate in many with AN, and may produce obstacles to treatment engagement; therefore, these could potentially represent predictors for longitudinal clinical outcomes. In this study, anxiety and reward symptoms, behaviors, and neural circuit connectivity were measured in intensively treated AN-restrictive subtype patients (n = 33) and healthy controls (n = 31). Participants underwent an fMRI experimen

Sex differences in specific aspects of two animal tests of anxiety-like behavior.

RATIONALE: Anxiety, a negative state of high arousal and vigilance, is especially prevalent in women, making identification of underlying mechanisms critical for developing effective therapies. With the challenge of disentangling biological and social factors in humans, animal tests can provide valuable insights, although such tests, developed in males, have unclear validity for females. OBJECTIVE: To better understand patterns of sex differences across multiple measures within two classical rodent anxiety tests. METHODS: We examined female and male adult Wistar rats (n = 15-18/group) that w

Testing the Functional Profiles of School Refusal Behavior and Clarifying Their Relationship With School Anxiety.

Students with school attendance problems are a diverse and heterogeneous group whose patterns of symptomatology can change over time. This study aims to identify different school refusal behavior profiles and to determine whether these profiles differ from each other based on four situational factors and three response systems of school anxiety across gender. The participants were 1,685 Spanish students (49% female) aged 15-18 years (M = 16.28; SD =0.97). The School Refusal Assessment Scale-Revised (SRAS-R) and the School Anxiety Inventory (SAI) were administered. Latent profile analysis revea

Influence of Anxiety on Baseline Cognitive Testing and Symptom Reporting in Adolescent Student Athletes.

Anxiety symptoms are commonly endorsed by student athletes. This study examined the possible influence of anxiety on baseline cognitive testing and symptom reporting in a large sample of adolescent student athletes. Participants were 37,945 adolescent student athletes from the state of Maine who completed baseline testing using ImPACT®. ImPACT includes an evaluation of cognitive functioning and a questionnaire assessing the presence and severity of common post-concussion symptoms. Participants were divided into high and low anxiety groups based on endorsement of anxiety-like symptoms. Student

High-Fat Diet Enhances Working Memory in the Y-Maze Test in Male C57BL/6J Mice with Less Anxiety in the Elevated Plus Maze Test.

Obesity is characterized by massive adipose tissue accumulation and is associated with psychiatric disorders and cognitive impairment in human and animal models. However, it is unclear whether high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity presents a risk of psychiatric disorders and cognitive impairment. To examine this question, we conducted systematic behavioral analyses in C57BL/6J mice (male, 8-week-old) fed an HFD for 7 weeks. C57BL/6J mice fed an HFD showed significantly increased body weight, hyperlocomotion in the open-field test (OFT) and Y-maze test (YMZT), and impaired sucrose preference in t

Test anxiety predictors inventory (tapi): development and initial validation of a predictor-oriented instrument for medical students.

BACKGROUND: Test anxiety (TA) is common among medical students and may adversely affect mental well-being and academic performance. However, existing instruments such as the Test Anxiety Inventory (TAI) predominantly quantify the severity and manifestations of anxiety (outcomes) rather than identifying modifiable, intervention-relevant antecedents (predictors). This study aimed to develop and validate the Test Anxiety Predictors Inventory (TAPI) to support concurrent identification of at-risk students and to inform domain-specific, targeted interventions in resource-constrained medical trainin

Psychometric validation of an ultra-short form test anxiety inventory: initial step towards a brief screening measure.

BACKGROUND: Test anxiety affects up to 40% of university students and is associated with academic failure, depression and suicidal ideation, yet clinical screening and high-frequency research designs remain hampered by the burden of 20-item instruments such as the Test Anxiety Inventory (TAI). Although brief measures exist (e.g. the ten-item Westside Test Anxiety Scale and the five-item TAI), a validated, gender-invariant hierarchy of ultra-short forms tailored to contemporary undergraduates is lacking. AIMS: To develop and validate a hierarchy of brief TAI versions (ten-item Short Form, five

Frontal alpha asymmetry and heart rate variability as markers of conditional heart-brain interaction in test anxiety.

Test Anxiety (TA) is known to impair the heart-brain interaction affecting both the central and autonomic nervous systems. The impairment is often assumed to be uniform, overlooking individual variability in stress response. This study explores how heart-brain dysregulation in TA may manifest conditionally, shaped by individual differences. Frontal alpha asymmetry (FAA), reflecting predisposition to avoidance and anxiety, and heart rate variability (HRV), indicating regulatory capacity, are employed as markers to examine individual variations. Fifty-seven healthy university students (M = 22.07

The salivary-α-amylase level after stroop test in anxious patients can predict the severity of anxiety.

Individuals with anxiety disorder often exhibit as imbalance in response to stressors. We sought to explore the relationship between physiological as well as psychological responses under acute mental stress and the severity of the disease. 20 Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) patients (14 males, mean age 46 ± 10 years) were confronted with the stroop test, during which salivary-α-amylase (sAA), salivary cortisol, and heart rate variability (HRV) were assessed. The results showed that stroop test as a stressor induced autonomic nervous response in GAD patients, which was mainly manifested as

The effects of childhood maltreatment and anxiety proneness on neuropsychological test performance in non-clinical older adolescents.

BACKGROUND: The effect of childhood maltreatment (CM) on neuropsychological performance is well established, but the effect of anxiety proneness (AP) on such performance has been underexplored. We assessed the predictive ability of CM and AP, and their interaction, in non-clinical adolescents, for a range of previously documented neuropsychological deficits. METHODS: Multiple linear regression models were used to assess the unique and combined influences of CM and AP on neuropsychological performance in 104 non-clinical adolescents, who underwent both neuropsychiatric and neuropsychological a

Test Anxiety in Spanish Adolescents: Examining the Role of Emotional Attention, and Ruminative Self-focus and Regulation.

Emotional attention has been found as a key predictive dimension of stress. However, very few studies have investigated the relationship between emotional attention and test anxiety. The objective of the present study was to analyze the role of emotional attention, measured using the Trait Meta-Mood Scale (TMMS), on the level of test anxiety, and measured using the Test Anxiety Inventory (TAI). In addition, we examined the potential mediating role of Self-Rumination and Self-Reflection, as measured through the Rumination-Reflection Questionnaire (RRQ), on the relationship between emotional att

An experimental test of the effect of acute anxious arousal and anxiety sensitivity on negative reinforcement smoking.

INTRODUCTION: Although anxiety sensitivity has been reliably associated with smoking-anxiety comorbidity, there has not been a test of whether this construct moderates the effect of acute anxious arousal on actual smoking behavior. The present study utilized an experimental design to test the moderating role of anxiety sensitivity on laboratory-induced anxious arousal in terms of smoking urges and topography (puff style). METHOD: Participants were adult daily smokers (n=90; Mage=43.6 SD =9.7); average 15.8 cigarettes per day). A between-subjects design was used; participants were randomly ass
