Development of an Ecological Momentary Assessment-Triggered Text Message Library for Peripheral Artery Disease.

This study developed an ecological momentary assessment (EMA)-triggered text message library based on the behavior change wheel framework to encourage exercise engagement in patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD). This study was conducted in three steps. In Step 1, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 patients with PAD. Their accounts of their exercise experiences revealed six barriers and three facilitators through thematic analysis. In Step 2, based on the findings from the prior step, the EMA survey was developed; its items included barriers to exercise, PAD-related leg

Customized recommendations and reminder text messages for automated, computer-based treatment during methadone.

The Recovery Line is an automated, computer-based intervention based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) designed to provide real-time assistance by phone for patients in methadone maintenance. Preliminary efficacy findings were promising, however, as with other computer-based systems for substance use disorder, patient system use was less than recommended. Development and evaluation of system functions to increase patient engagement and use is needed. Thus, we conducted two randomized trials to evaluate system functions designed to increase patient use of the Recovery Line among methadone-m

Outcome of reminder text messages intervention on completion of routine immunization in rural areas, Nigeria.

Completion of routine immunization for infants has been a challenge in Nigeria, and existing strategies implemented to promote immunization coverage yielded limited success. The use of reminder short services message (SMS) in mobilizing mothers of infants, especially in rural areas with lower immunization coverage has been suggested. This study investigated the effect of reminder SMS sent to mothers in rural communities on full and timely completion of routine childhood immunization. A quasi-experimental design was adopted, 3500 mothers of infants were categorized into the Intervention and Con

The impact of text message reminders on adherence to antimalarial treatment in northern Ghana: a randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Low rates of adherence to artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) regimens increase the risk of treatment failure and may lead to drug resistance, threatening the sustainability of current anti-malarial efforts. We assessed the impact of text message reminders on adherence to ACT regimens. METHODS: Health workers at hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, and other stationary ACT distributors in Tamale, Ghana provided flyers advertising free mobile health information to individuals receiving malaria treatment. The messaging system automatically randomized self-enrolled individuals to

Leveraging Text Messaging and Behavior Theory to Improve Colorectal Cancer Screening in Federally Qualified Health Centers: Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. Despite recommendations for screening to begin at the age of 45 years, significant disparities persist, particularly among medically underserved populations. OBJECTIVE: This study examines the effectiveness of SMS text messaging reminders in improving CRC screening rates across 2 large federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) serving vulnerable populations. METHODS: The study included 4822 adults aged ≥45 years, receiving care at 2 large FQHC networks in Texas and California. Part

Text Messaging Interventions for Unhealthy Alcohol Use in Emergency Departments: Mixed Methods Assessment of Implementation Barriers and Facilitators.

BACKGROUND: Many patients with unhealthy alcohol use (UAU) access health care in emergency departments (EDs). Scalable supports, such as SMS text messaging interventions, are acceptable and feasible to enhance care delivery for many health issues, including substance use. Further, SMS text messaging interventions have been shown to improve patient outcomes related to alcohol consumption (eg, reduced consumption compared to no intervention, basic health information, or drink tracking), but they are rarely offered in clinical settings. OBJECTIVE: This paper describes a mixed methods study using

Text messaging interventions to support smoking cessation among hospitalized patients in Brazil: a randomized comparative effectiveness clinical trial.

OBJECTIVE: A clinical trial carried out in patients hospitalized for clinical and surgical conditions. This study evaluated the effectiveness of text messaging interventions (TM) versus telephone counseling (TC) to promote smoking cessation among hospitalized smokers in a middle-income country. Seven-day abstinence was measured during follow-up phone calls one month after discharge. The comparative cost of the two interventions considered the cost of calls, time spent on phone calls and sending SMS and cost of the professional involved in the approaches. RESULTS: Past 7-day tobacco abstinence

Randomised Controlled Trial of a Customised Text Messaging and Activity Monitor Program for Lifestyle Improvement after Gestational Diabetes.

Gestational diabetes (GDM) is associated with a long-term risk of diabetes. We aimed to determine whether a text-messaging-based lifestyle support program would improve diabetes risk factors following GDM. Women with GDM were randomised following delivery to receive four text messages per week supporting a healthy lifestyle and parenting for 6 months, with feedback from an activity monitor (intervention), or to receive the activity monitor only (control). The primary outcome was a composite of weight, physical activity and dietary goals. There were 177 women randomised, with 88 intervention an

Implementation of free-draft text messaging to enhance care retention and satisfaction for persons living with HIV infection.

Eligible persons with HIV infection can receive client-centered case management to coordinate medical and social services. Novel mobile health interventions could improve effective case management and retention in care, an important goal to help end the HIV epidemic. Using a hybrid type I effectiveness-implementation design, we assessed whether access to bidirectional, free-draft secure text messaging with a case manager and clinic pharmacist could improve client satisfaction and care retention in a Southern academic HIV clinic. Sixty-four clients enrolled between November 2019 and March 2020,

Pilot Randomized Clinical Trial of a Text Messaging-Based Intervention for Smoking Cessation Among Young People Experiencing Homelessness.

INTRODUCTION: Smoking rates are alarmingly high among young people experiencing homelessness (YEH), yet there are no evidence-based cessation programs for this population. This paper presents results from a pilot evaluation of a text messaging-based smoking cessation treatment, as an adjunct to brief group cessation counseling, to improve abstinence rates among 18-25-year-old smokers experiencing homelessness. The goal of this study was to estimate effect sizes for a larger trial and it was not powered to detect group differences. AIMS AND METHODS: YEH smokers who had a working cell phone wit

Feasibility and acceptability of a pilot tailored text messaging intervention for adolescents and young adults completing cancer treatment.

PURPOSE: Despite cure, adolescents and young adults (AYA) who complete cancer treatment remain at risk for numerous physical and psychological late effects. However, engagement in recommended follow-up care, knowledge of cancer treatment history and risks, and adoption of health promoting behaviors are often suboptimal. The pilot randomized controlled trial assessed the feasibility and acceptability of a text messaging intervention (THRIVE; Texting Health Resources to Inform, motiVate, and Engage) designed to promote well-being, and health knowledge and behaviors. METHODS: Sixty-one AYA who r

The Impact of Text Messaging on Medication Adherence and Exercise Among Postmyocardial Infarction Patients: Randomized Controlled Pilot Trial.

BACKGROUND: Adherence to evidence-based therapies such as medications and exercise remains poor among patients after a myocardial infarction (MI). Text message reminders have been shown to improve rates of adherence to medication and exercise, but the existing studies have been of short duration. OBJECTIVE: Two single-center randomized controlled pilot trials were conducted to evaluate the impact of text message reminders over 12 months on adherence to cardiac medications and exercise among patients receiving cardiac rehabilitation after hospitalization for MI. METHODS: In the medication adh

A multi-site feasibility study to assess fever and wheezing in children after influenza vaccines using text messaging.

BACKGROUND: Using text messaging for vaccine safety monitoring, particularly for non-medically attended events, would be valuable for pandemic influenza and emergency vaccination program preparedness. We assessed the feasibility and acceptability of text messaging to evaluate fever and wheezing post-influenza vaccination in a prospective, observational, multi-site pediatric study. METHODS: Children aged 2-11 years old, with an emphasis on children with asthma, were recruited during the 2014-2015 influenza season from three community-based clinics in New York City, and during the 2014-2015 and

Engagement with a Text Message Booster to Extend a School-Based Teen Dating Violence Prevention Program.

BACKGROUND: Teen dating violence (TDV) is a prevalent public health problem with significant consequences for mental, physical, and social well-being. School-based programs have demonstrated modest but reliable effects on TDV-related outcomes; however, skills introduced in early adolescence may be less applicable as youth age. METHODS: This project was embedded within a larger randomized controlled trial conducted in spring 2018, in which students were randomized to receive either the Fourth R relationship-based intervention or a standard school health education curriculum. Automated reminders reduce incarceration for missed court dates: Evidence from a text message experiment.

Millions of Americans must attend mandatory court dates every year. To boost appearance rates, jurisdictions nationwide are increasingly turning to automated reminders. However, previous research paints an incomplete picture of their effectiveness-in particular, there has been little work assessing the impact of reminders on downstream arrests and incarceration. In partnership with the Santa Clara County Public Defender's Office, we randomly assigned 5709 public defender clients to either receive automated text message reminders (treatment) or not receive reminders (control). We found that rem
