Changes in iron and ferritin in anemic calves infected with Theileria sergenti.

Changes in iron and ferritin in calves infected with Theileria sergenti were investigated to elucidate iron metabolism in animals with extravascular hemolytic anemia. During severe anemia, serum iron was remarkably elevated while the total iron-binding capacity remained relatively unchanged or decreased slightly in the infected calves, resulting in elevated transferrin saturation. The serum ferritin concentration gradually increased with the progress of anemia. The erythrocyte ferritin content drastically increased when mean corpuscular volume was elevated. The concentration of non-heme iron a

Theileria parva: the nature of the immune response and its significance for immunoprophylaxis.

Theileria parva is a tick-borne haemoprotozoan parasite of cattle and buffalo which is responsible for considerable economic losses to cattle farming in Eastern, Central and Southern Africa. Infection with the parasite results in an acute lymphoproliferative disorder with high mortality, but animals which survive infection are solidly immune to homologous challenge. Such immunity can be reproduced by infecting cattle with the parasite and treating them with tetracyclines or theilericidal drugs, but the widespread use of this technique as a method of control is hindered by its dependence on liv

Studies on Theileriidae (Sporozoa) in Tanzania IX. Unidentified bovine Theileriae.

Two strains of nonpathogenic Theileriae, designated as Theileria sp. (Idobogo) and Theileria sp. (Mwanza), were isolated from cattle in southern and northern Tanzania respectively. They were similar to each other, producing low numbers of T. parva-like macroschizonts and of small piroplasms. Both were readily transmitted by Rhipicephalus appendiculatus. No serological relationship with T. mutans was found, while serum of some of the recovered animals gave fleeting, low titres in the indirect fluorescent antibody test to T. parva schizont antigen. Recovered animals were fully susceptible to T.

Swift detection of Theileria annulata: A one-pot SHERLOCK Assay approach.

The protozoan pathogen, Theileria annulata, is transmitted by ticks which is very detrimental to various breeds of cattle, leading to the development of theileriosis. Early diagnosis and control of the disease is a crucial aspect of preventing and treating any infection. In order to detect T. annulata on-site, we selected sporozoite surface antigen gene (SPAG) as the target gene to design Recombinase Polymerase Amplification (RPA) primers and crRNA to build a one-pot SHERLOCK method. The results showed the assay could specifically detect T. annulata infection, but have no-cross reaction with t

Theileria parasites secrete a prolyl isomerase to maintain host leukocyte transformation.

Infectious agents develop intricate mechanisms to interact with host cell pathways and hijack their genetic and epigenetic machinery to change host cell phenotypic states. Among the Apicomplexa phylum of obligate intracellular parasites, which cause veterinary and human diseases, Theileria is the only genus that transforms its mammalian host cells. Theileria infection of bovine leukocytes induces proliferative and invasive phenotypes associated with activated signalling pathways, notably JNK and AP-1 (ref. 2). The transformed phenotypes are reversed by treatment with the theilericidal drug bup

Symptoms and pathology of experimental bovine tropical theileriosis (Theileria annulata infection).

Bovine tropical theileriosis (Theileria annulata infection) is of great economic importance to several countries of Asia and Africa where millions of cattle are at risk of exposure to this disease. The authors describe symptoms, sequence of appearance of the parasite and pathology of the infection by three virulent strains of the parasite in fully susceptible calves. Symptoms observed were: enlargement of local lymph gland, fever, haemorrhages on visible mucous membranes and sometime on skin, anaemia and jaundice particularly in subacute and chronic forms of the disease. The parasite "schizont

Anaplasma spp., Coxiella, Babesia and Theileria Infections in Vermipsylla Alakurt Fleas.

BACKGROUND: Vermipsylla alakurt (Siphonaptera: Vermipsyllidae) is mainly distributed in alpine areas of north-western China, infesting sheep, goat and yaks, causing pruritus, anaemia and losses to animal husbandry. The carriage of vector-borne pathogens by this flea remains unclear. METHODS: In January 2025, 89 fleas were collected from sheep in the China-Kazakhstan border area of northwest China and identified as V. alakurt by morphology and COII gene sequencing. Multiple genetic markers targeting the genera of Anaplasma, Coxiella, Babesia and Theileria were amplified and sequenced. RESULTS

Genetic diversity of Theileria spp. in deer (Artiodactyla: Cervidae) from Brazil.

Babesia spp. and Theileria spp. are tick-borne apicomplexan protozoa that can cause disease in animals and humans. Deer are considered reservoirs for a wide variety of Piroplasmida species, including some potentially zoonotic. This study aimed to investigate the occurrence and genetic diversity of piroplasmids in wild deer sampled in four Brazilian states (São Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraná and Goiás). For this purpose, extracted DNA samples from 181 deer buffy coat samples (138 Blastocerus dichotomus, 26 Subulo gouazoubira, 4 Mazama jucunda, 3 Mazama rufa and 10 Ozotocerus bezoarticus) wer

Plasma high density lipoprotein in anemic cattle infected with Theileria sergenti.

Changes in plasma concentration of lipid composition were analysed in cattle with anemia due to Theileria sergenti infection. Plasma levels of phospholipids, cholesterol, free cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol, and vitamin E decreased to 40-67% of the pre-infection levels, corresponding to the decrease of PCV due to the infection. However, no definite changes were detected in plasma level of triglyceride. By gradient centrifugation, it was confirmed that lipid components, other than triglyceride, occur in high density lipoprotein (HDL) and these decreases lowered the HDL value.

Cattle ticks and associated tick-borne pathogens in Burkina Faso and Benin: Apparent northern spread of Rhipicephalus microplus in Benin and first evidence of Theileria velifera and Theileria annulata.

Babesiosis, theileriosis, anaplasmosis, and heartwater are tick-borne diseases that threaten livestock production in sub-Saharan Africa including Burkina Faso and Benin. For over a decade, these two bordering countries have been facing an invasion of the livestock by the tick Rhipicephalus microplus, a major vector for babesiosis, accidentally introduced in Benin in 2004. The molecular identification of tick-borne pathogens in this border area is of particular interest due to animals seasonal migration between the two countries. In this survey, epidemiological features of ticks and tick-borne

From Benign Parasite to Emerging Pathogen: A Review of Theileria orientalis in Ruminants.

Once regarded as a benign, clinically overlooked organism, Theileria orientalis has undergone a paradigm shift in its perceived status and is now recognised as a tick-borne haemoparasite of clinical and economic importance. Severe outbreaks characterised by haemolytic anaemia, reproductive losses, and mortality, primarily associated with the Ikeda and Chitose genotypes, have been increasingly reported in Australasia, Asia, and North America. In Europe and parts of Africa, however, the epidemiological status of T. orientalis remains poorly defined, despite increasing molecular evidence of circu

Prevalence and genetic diversity of Theileria and Anaplasma species infecting cattle in Paraguay.

Bovine theileriosis and anaplasmosis are major tick-borne diseases affecting cattle health and productivity worldwide. Although cattle farming significantly contributes to Paraguay's economy, limited epidemiological data on the causative agents hinder the formulation of disease control measures. To address this challenge, the present study investigated the prevalence, risk factors, and genetic diversity of Theileria annulata, Theileria orientalis, and Anaplasma marginale among cattle populations in Paraguay. Blood DNA samples from 326 cattle in nine departments of Paraguay were screened with t

Epidemiology and genetic diversity of Theileria equi and Babesia caballi in Mongolian horses.

Equine piroplasmosis is a tick-borne disease caused by Theileria equi and Babesia caballi in horses. Because of its impact on horse industry, control of this disease is crucial for endemic countries. The control of equine piroplasmosis may be influenced by the genotypic diversity of T. equi and B. caballi. Mongolia, a country with a thriving livestock industry, is endemic for T. equi and B. caballi. However, nationwide epidemiological surveys have not been conducted to determine the current status of infections and genetic diversity of these two parasite species. Therefore, the objective of th
