Evaluation of selected growth factor expression in canine spirocercosis (Spirocerca lupi)-associated non-neoplastic nodules and sarcomas.

The study aims to assess the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-A, fibroblast growth factor (FGF) and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) in the progression of the spirocercosis-induced oesophageal nodule in the dog from early, non-neoplastic, inflammatory nodule to sarcomatous neoplasia. Triplicate 4 μm-thick sections from 62 paraffin blocks containing Spirocerca-induced nodules were treated according to the steptavidin-biotin (LSAB) immunohistochemical method using polyclonal goat-anti-canine VEGF and anti-human FGF and PDGF antibodies. The nodules were classified as e

First reports of autochthonous eyeworm infection by Thelazia callipaeda (Spirurida, Thelaziidae) in dogs and cat from France.

Thelazia callipaeda (Spirurida, Thelaziidae) is a small nematode living in the conjunctival sac of domestic and wild carnivores, rabbits and humans causing lacrimation, epiphora, conjunctivitis, keratitis and even corneal ulcers. The first autochthonous cases of thelaziosis affecting four dogs and one cat living in South Western France (Dordogne area) are reported and described. Nematodes recovered from the animals were morphologically identified as T. callipaeda and a partial region of the cytochrome oxidase c subunit 1 gene (cox1) was amplified by PCR from nematode specimens (from two dogs a

Reassessing Stephanofilaria stilesi dermatitis in cattle, with characterization of molecular markers for confirming diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Stephanofilaria stilesi is a vector-borne filarioid nematode of cattle in North America that is transmitted via the hematophagous horn fly (Haematobia irritans) intermediate host. Despite being relatively common, little attention has been given to a thorough description of S. stilesi lesions and the potential integration of pathological and molecular diagnostic findings to confirm infection. METHODS: To characterize the cutaneous lesions caused by S. stilesi in cattle (Bos taurus taurus and Bos taurus indicus), skin of the ventral abdominal midline was collected from 22 animals du

Dietary effects on the development and population dynamics of the Thelazia callipaeda vector Phortica okadai revealed by age-stage, two-sex life table analysis.

BACKGROUND: Phortica okadai (Diptera: Steganinae) is the primary vector of the zoonotic eyeworm Thelazia callipaeda (Nematoda: Spirurida). However, standardized laboratory rearing protocols for this vector are still lacking, which limits research on its biology and vector competence. METHODS: We evaluated the effects of five diets (fermented apple, pear, banana, and two artificial diets) on life history traits of P. okadai using age stage, two sex life table analysis under controlled conditions (28 ± 1 °C, 75 ± 5% RH, 14:10 h L:D). Life table parameters and population dynamics were analyzed w

Thoracic radiographic findings of canine spirocercosis in Australia.

Canine spirocercosis in Australia has been poorly described in the veterinary literature. The objectives of this multicentre retrospective case series were to increase the awareness of veterinarians (including teleradiology providers) regarding Spirocerca lupi in Australia and to describe the thoracic radiographic findings of dogs infected with S. lupi with comparison to other endemic regions. Fifty-nine dogs with a diagnosis of canine spirocercosis were recruited from veterinary practices located in subtropical and tropical Australia. Many (54/59; 92%) originated from Mount Isa, Queensland, d

Infectious keratoconjunctivitis in European bison (Bison bonasus) in Poland: risk factors, epidemiology and anatomopathological changes with analysis of potential role of Thelazia nematodes in the disease development.

BACKGROUND: Infectious keratoconjunctivitis (IKC) is a common ocular disease of ruminants worldwide. Recently, an outbreak of infectious keratoconjunctivitis was observed in the European bison in Poland. Hundreds of animals show conjunctival congestion, corneal opacity, and ulceration, leading to total blindness. The present study aimed to examine the ocular changes of European bison and patterns of the disease occurrence with special emphasis on the role of Thelazia nematodes in the development of IKC. RESULTS: The eyes of 131 European bison, showing ocular signs and clinically healthy, were

Ocular thelaziosis: an emerging human parasitosis in Europe.

Ocular thelaziosis is a parasitosis distributed mainly in East Asia, but increasingly described in Europe in different domestic and wild animals, including dogs, different wild canids and lagomorphs, and exceptionally in humans. In Spain, in some areas, a high infection prevalence rate has been described in domestic canids, which may lead to an increase in human cases. However, the description of human cases is still exceptional, which suggests that they are probably underdiagnosed. A case of ocular thelaziosis in a 2-year-old girl from an urban environment is described.

Immunohistochemical characterization of lymphocyte and myeloid cell infiltrates in spirocercosis-induced oesophageal nodules.

Spirocerca lupi is a nematode that infects the dog's oesophagus and promotes the formation of an inflammatory fibroblastic nodule that progresses to sarcoma in approximately 25% of cases. Spirocercosis-associated oesophageal sarcoma is an excellent and under-utilized spontaneous model of parasite-associated malignancy. The inflammatory infiltrate of paraffin-embedded, non-neoplastic oesophageal nodules (n = 46), neoplastic nodules (n = 25) and normal oesophagus (n = 14) was examined by immunohistochemistry using MAC387 (myeloid cells), CD3 (T cells), Pax5 (B cells) and FoxP3 (T regulatory cell

Two human cases of gnathostomiasis and discovery of a second intermediate host of Gnathostoma nipponicum in Japan.

Two human cases of gnathostomiasis from ingestion of raw native Japanese loaches, Misgurnus anguillicaudatus, are reported. Seven early third-stage larval Gnathostoma nipponicum were recovered from 3,098 loaches in the same district in which 2 human patients had obtained and eaten raw loaches. Encapsulated G. nipponicum larvae were also recovered from loaches infected under laboratory conditions. All 6 weasels captured in the same district in which the naturally infected loaches were found and where the humans had become infected were infected with adult worms of the same species. This is the

Thelazia leesei Railliet & Henry, 1910 (Spirurida: Thelaziidae) of dromedary camel Camelus dromedarius: further morphological description, molecular characterization, and epidemiology in Iran.

BACKGROUND: In camels, thelaziosis is mainly caused by Thelazia leesei Railliet & Henry, 1910, a little-known eyeworm species. Given the paucity of scientific data, this study aimed to provide new insights into the morphology, molecular characterization, and phylogenetic relationship of T. leesei and its occurrence in camels from Iran, where animals suffer from the high burden of eyeworms. METHODS: From December 2020 to November 2022, slaughtered camels (n = 400) of different sex and age groups were examined in Sistan-va-Baluchestan province in Southeast Iran's local abattoirs. Spirocercosis and Parvovirus in an Imported Dog: Implications for Biosecurity and Foreign Infectious Disease Risk.

Increased international travel and importation of animals brings with it the potential for spread of infectious diseases. This report details a case in which an 8-month-old male mixed breed dog died shortly after arrival to the United States from complications secondary to spirocercosis, despite having been deemed healthy and approved for international travel. Four weeks following arrival, the dog developed mild tachypnea and diarrhea. Physical examination revealed moderate pyrexia with generalized cerebellar ataxia, moderate anemia, a mature neutrophilia, and severe panhypoproteinemia. Packed

Live encysted Thelazia callipaeda presenting as a lump adjacent to the right lacrimal sac in a 42-year-old female: A rare case report.

Thelazia callipaeda or the oriental eye worm infects a wide variety of hosts including dogs, cats, foxes, rabbits, and humans through the Drosophila flies. We report here a case of a 42-year-old female who presented with pain, redness, and cystic swelling in the right lacrimal sac area for 8 months. Ocular examination was within normal limits. Excision biopsy of the cyst revealed a live worm. In humans, the worm is usually found in the conjunctival sac, lacrimal canaliculi, or the lacrimal sac leading to a disease which can be subclinical or symptomatic. Thus, we report a rare presentation of

Detection of humoral immune response to Gnathostoma spinigerum in mice.

The humoral immune response to early third stage larvae (EL3) and advanced third stage larvae (AL3) of Gnathostoma spinigerum infection was studied in mice by Ouchterlony gel diffusion technique. The antibodies was detected at week 3 in mice infected with EL3 and remained up to week 10 after infection. Highest positive sample of sera were demonstrated at week 4 to week 7. Similar results were obtained from AL3 infected sera except the antibodies was found and disappeared earlier (week 2 to week 6). G. spinigerum larvae recovery from mice in both groups showed that the number of advanced third

Thelazia lacrymalis in horses in Kentucky and observations on the face fly (Musca autumnalis) as a probable intermediate host.

Eyes from 114 (30.3%) of 376 dead horses, examined from 3 April 1975 to 3 April 1976, were naturally infected with adult Thelazia lacrymalis; 1 horse was also infected with 1 male Thelazia skrijabini. Adult T. lacrymalis from dead horses were successfully transferred mechanically to the eyes of 3 of 4 Shetland ponies raised helminth-free. Larvae from gravid female T. lacrymalis underwent development in experimentally infected, laboratory-raised face flies (Musca autumnalis) and third-stage larvae ranging from 1.82 to 2.94 mm in total length were recovered at 12 to 15 days postexposure. THE POTENTIAL LONG-TERM INFECTIVITY OF OXYSPIRURA PETROWI EGGS TO INSECT INTERMEDIATE HOSTS OVER DIFFERENT SEASONS.

Oxyspirura (O.) petrowi is a parasitic eyeworm that infects a wide range of avian hosts across North America at high prevalences, including species undergoing significant population declines. Despite growing concern over its ecological impact, the epidemiology of O. petrowi eggs remains poorly understood. This study is the first to assess the potential long-term infectivity of larvated O. petrowi eggs across seasonal exposure periods, aiming to identify environmental thresholds affecting larval survival. Eggs were placed in mesh bags with soil and placed in an outdoor plot where O. petrowi are

A Helminth Survey of Northern Bobwhite Quail (Colinus virginianus) and Passerines in the Rolling Plains Ecoregion of Texas.

The Northern bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus) is a popular game bird that has been experiencing a well-documented decline throughout Texas since the 1960s. While much of this decline has been attributed to habitat loss and fragmentation, recent studies have identified other factors that may also contribute to decreasing quail populations. Parasites, in particular, have become increasingly recognized as possible stressors of quail, and some species, particularly the eyeworm (Oxyspirura petrowi) and cecal worm (Aulonocephalus pennula) are highly prevalent in Texas quails. Eyeworm infection h

Thelazia callipaeda in Slovakia - From sporadic cases to endemic areas.

Spirurid nematode Thelazia callipaeda, transmitted by the fruit fly Phortica variegata, is a causative agent of an ocular parasitic disease called also canine thelaziosis. Dogs, cats, and wild canids are considered the primary definitive hosts for the parasite, but humans may also serve as aberrant definitive hosts. For long decades the geographic range of T. callipaeda was strictly limited to the territory of Asia, but after the year 2000, the parasite began to spread rapidly through Europe. The first autochthonous infections of dogs and foxes in Slovakia were recorded in 2016. In the present
