Theory of mind in Asperger's syndrome, schizophrenia and personality disordered forensic patients.

INTRODUCTION: The ability to conceptualise other individuals' mental states is dependent on having a 'theory of mind' (ToM). Individuals with Asperger's syndrome typically display ToM impairments, as do some individuals with schizophrenia, notably those with paranoid delusions. The presenting features of these and other individuals, such as those with some personality disorders, particularly in forensic patients, are often unclear. ToM performance was examined to see whether it could distinguish forensic patients with Asperger's syndrome from other patient groups. METHODS: The performance of

Theory of mind in trichotillomania: A cross-sectional comparison with healthy controls.

BACKGROUND: Theory of mind (ToM) is the ability to make correct inferences from one's own or another person's mental states, such as thoughts, beliefs, desires, and intentions. Although there are a limited number of studies in the literature examining the social cognitive functions of patients with trichotillomania (TTM), no studies have evaluated ToM. This study aimed to compare the ToM skills of patients with TTM and healthy controls. METHOD: The study included 40 patients who were diagnosed as having TTM according to DSM-5 criteria and 40 healthy controls matched for age, education, and se

Theory of Mind and Empathy in Adults With Epilepsy: A Meta-Analysis.

Mounting evidence suggests that social cognitive abilities [including theory of mind (ToM) and empathy] are impaired in adult patients with epilepsy. Although the deficits in overall ToM in epilepsy have been documented well, the effects of epilepsy on empathic ability and specific subcomponents of ToM remain unclear. The primary aim of this study was to provide the first meta-analytic integration of ToM and empathy in adult patients with epilepsy, and to decompose these constructs to clearly differentiate their distinct (cognitive ToM and affective empathy) and overlapping (affective ToM/cogn

Theory of mind in patients with mild cognitive impairment: A systematic review.

The focus of this systematic review was to collect and align studies which analyze the functionality of theory of mind (TOM) in patients with mild cognitive impairments (MCI). Specifically, we identified 20 papers published between 2012 and 2022 which met inclusion criteria. Papers search, selection, and extraction followed the PRISMA guidelines. In order to summarize data from the papers, we used a narrative synthesis approach. Results in 18 of these 20 papers show that theory of mind (TOM) is impaired in all types of MCI patients-regardless of different etiology and diagnostic criteria. Only

Executive Function, Theory of Mind, and Conduct-Problem Symptoms in Middle Childhood.

Studies show relations between executive function (EF), Theory of Mind (ToM), and conduct-problem (CP) symptoms. However, many studies have involved cross-sectional data, small clinical samples, pre-school children, and/or did not consider potential mediation effects. The present study examined the longitudinal relations between EF, ToM abilities, and CP symptoms in a population-based sample of 1,657 children between 6 and 11 years (T1: M = 8.3 years, T2: M = 9.1 years; 51.9% girls). We assessed EF skills and ToM abilities via computerized tasks at first measurement (T1), CP symptoms were rate

The relationship between theory of mind and insight in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: It is known that obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) patients with poor insight display more severe neuropsychological impairments than other patients with OCD. There are limited studies of OCD and theory of mind (ToM). AIM: To investigate ToM skills in patients with OCD and the relationship between insight and ToM skills by comparing OCD patients with good and poor insight. METHODS: Eighty patients with OCD and 80 healthy controls completed the structured clinical interview for DSM-IV axis I disorders, the Yale Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale, the Beck Anxiety and Beck Depressi

Mild adverse childhood experiences increase neural efficacy during affective theory of mind.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) affect the development of social cognition (and identify a risk factor for several physical and mental disorders). Theory of Mind (ToM) is a key predictor of social functioning, mental health, and quality of life. No previous study explored the effect of mild ACEs on the neural correlates of ToM in healthy humans. In 23 healthy participants, we used brain blood oxygen level-dependent fMRI to study the effect of ACEs on the neural responses to tasks targeting affective and cognitive ToM. Results pointed out an association between ACEs and a lower neural resp

Dysregulation between emotion and theory of mind networks in borderline personality disorder.

Individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD) commonly display deficits in emotion regulation, but findings in the area of social cognitive (e.g., theory of mind, ToM) capacities have been heterogeneous. The aims of the current study were to investigate differences between patients with BPD and controls in functional connectivity (1) between the emotion and ToM network and (2) in the default mode network (DMN). Functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to investigate 19 healthy controls and 17 patients with BPD at rest and during ToM processing. Functional coupling was analysed.

Theory of mind in eating disorders and their relationship to clinical profile.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess cognitive and affective theory of mind (ToM) in patients with eating disorders and to explore its relationship with the clinical and psychopathological profile. METHOD: Theory of mind was assessed in 65 women, consisting of 22 with anorexia nervosa (AN), 19 with bulimia nervosa (BN), and 24 healthy controls (HC), using the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test and the Faux Pas Test. These tasks evaluate affective and cognitive ToM, respectively. We also examined the correlations between performance on ToM tasks and the clinical psychopathological profile, whi

Theory of Mind, Language and Adaptive Functioning in ASD: A Neuroconstructivist Perspective.

INTRODUCTION: Neuroconstructivist theories of development highlight the potential effect one developmental domain may have on constraining or facilitating another. Empirical validation of this theory requires further testing in autism spectrum disorders (ASD), and may illuminate the complex interplay of developmental trajectories, particularly in the relationship between predictor and outcome variables. In ASD, language ability is an early predictor of important functional outcomes such as communication and socialization. We aimed to investigate whether theory of mind (ToM) mediates the relati

Theory of mind and emotional awareness deficits in patients with somatoform disorders.

OBJECTIVE: To explore whether deficits are present in the mental representation of emotion signals and whether these are related to more general deficits in Theory of Mind (ToM) functioning test. To test this hypothesis in patients suffering from somatoform disorders, we used the Frith-Happé-Animations Task (AT)-an established ToM measure. We previously demonstrated that somatization in psychiatric patients is associated with decreased emotional awareness as measured by the Levels of Emotional Awareness Scale (LEAS). These findings suggest that individuals with decreased emotional awareness of

The impact of theory of mind and neurocognition on delusionality in anorexia nervosa.

The current study aimed to examine the impact of theory of mind (ToM) deficits on body image delusionality in anorexia nervosa (AN) while accounting for the effect of other cognitive functions. ToM and other cognitive functions were assessed in 46 patients with AN and 42 healthy controls. We used the Brown Assessment of Beliefs Scale to assess the degree of delusionality of body image beliefs in AN patients. Delusional body image beliefs were identified in 26.1% and overvalued ideas in 30.4% of the AN patients. Moderate but significant associations were found between impairments in ToM-overall

Impaired theory of mind in Parkinson's disease: A systematic review of etiological debates.

Impairment of theory of mind (ToM)-the ability to attribute mental states to others-has been identified as a non-motor feature of Parkinson's disease (PD), potentially undermining social functioning and quality of life. A central controversy concerns whether ToM deficits arise directly from PD neuropathology or are secondary to general cognitive impairment, with growing evidence pointing to the latter. This systematic review examined 14 studies employing designs that allow stronger causal inference-including regression, between-group, and experimental paradigms-to assess the dependence or inde

Language and "Theory of Mind" development of bilingual and monolingual children in Bulgaria.

Children from Bulgaria (N = 120) were tested on language and Theory of Mind (ToM) development. Sixty were ethnic bilingual Turkish children, and 60 were monolingual ethnic Bulgarian children. The age of the children varied between 3;6 to 5;0 years old. Both groups of children in the study were tested in their mother tongues (Turkish and Bulgarian); the Turkish children were also tested in their second language (L2)-Bulgarian, with a language test and Theory of Mind test. Theory of Mind was tested with classical tasks plus a non-verbal ToM task, and the language test comprised measures of wh-co

Characterization of theory of mind performance in patients with myotonic dystrophy type 1.

INTRODUCTION: Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is associated with motor dysfunction as well as psychological and cognitive impairments, including altered social cognition. Theory of mind (ToM) impairments have been reported in this disease but their nature and their cognitive/cerebral correlates have yet to be determined. METHODS: Fifty DM1 patients and 50 healthy controls were assessed using the Movie for the Assessment of Social Cognition, which quantifies impairments in affective and cognitive components of ToM through the depiction of everyday situations. We also measured the study partici

Theory of Mind and Alexithymia in Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Young Adults.

The aim of the current study was to examine theory of mind (ToM), the ability to infer the mental states of others, in young adults who are deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH), and to explore the influence of alexithymia, an inability to understand emotions of the self and others, on ToM performance in this group. Compared to participants with typical hearing, DHH participants displayed significantly lower affective ToM skills and greater alexithymia. After accounting for verbal intelligence quotient, hearing status and alexithymia significantly contributed to poorer ToM performance, accounting for

The role of illness burden in theory of mind performance among older adults.

UNLABELLED: Background/Study Context: Theory of Mind (ToM) reflects the ability to reason about mental states in order to understand and predict behavior. Research has identified links between increased pulse pressure, a measure of vascular health, and reduced cognitive ToM in older adults. However, the relationships between other vascular and nonvascular conditions and reduced ToM are unknown. We examined (1) illnesses as predictors of cognitive and affective ToM and (2) neurocognitive mediators of illness burden and ToM. METHODS: We used hierarchical regression and mediation to investigate

Resting state fMRI correlates of Theory of Mind impairment in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Theory of Mind (ToM), the ability to recognize thoughts and emotions of another, may be one of the cognitive domains affected in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a neurodegenerative disease now recognized as a multi-system disorder. The present study aimed to identify early dysfunctions of brain resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (RS-fMRI) networks in a group of ALS patients longitudinally explored for impairment of "cognitive" and "affective" ToM subcomponents. RS-fMRI connectivity was investigated in a group of 21 patients with ALS (i.e., 9 with bulbar-onset or ALS-B and

Prenatal testosterone and theory of mind development: Findings from disorders of sex development.

Women on average perform better than men on the "Reading the Mind in the Eyes" test (RMET) which is a measure of Theory of Mind (ToM). The aim of this study was to assess whether these sex differences are influenced by differences in prenatal testosterone levels through a study on individuals with Disorders of Sex Development and matched controls. ToM performance was examined using the RMET in female-assigned-at-birth individuals with increased prenatal testosterone exposure (Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH) and 5-alpha Reductase type-2 Deficiency (5α-RD-2)), female-assigned-at-birth indiv

Evidence from paranoid schizophrenia for more than one component of theory of mind.

We previously reported finding that performance was impaired on four out of five theory of mind (ToM) tests in a group of 21 individuals diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia (pScz), relative to a non-clinical group of 29 individuals (Scherzer et al., 2012). Only the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test did not distinguish between groups. A principal components analysis revealed that the results on the ToM battery could be explained by one general ToM factor with the possibility of a latent second factor. As well, the tests were not equally sensitive to the pathology. There was also overmentaliza
