The theory of planned behavior partly explains why adults with chronic musculoskeletal pain consider using medical cannabis for pain management.

Chronic musculoskeletal (MSK) pain has multiple causes and a high prevalence. Frequently, pharmacological options do not provide optimal pain relief, and treatment with opioids may lead to serious adverse effects. Although pharmacological effects of cannabis in pain management have been recognized, knowledge about a person’s motivations regarding this therapeutic strategy is limited. Such knowledge is important, given possible serious adverse effects of cannabis, and an increasing trend for self-medication. Our study aimed at exploring, understanding and quantifying pain patients’ motivations,

Using the Theory of Planned Behavior to Explain and Predict Areca Nut Use Among Adolescents in India: An Exploratory Study.

CONTEXT: Areca nut, used alone or in combination with tobacco, contributes to the high oral cancer burden in India. Used widely by adolescents, who perceive it as a harmless substance, areca nut is addictive and considered a precursor to tobacco use. Given its serious implications for addictiveness and physical health, urgent preventive interventions for areca nut use are required in India and South-East Asia. Studies examining the role of health behavior theory in explaining and predicting areca nut use and for development of its prevention among adolescents are scarce. AIM: This study explo

Assessing Public Willingness to Wear Face Masks during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Fresh Insights from the Theory of Planned Behavior.

Face masks are considered an effective intervention in controlling the spread of airborne viruses, as evidenced by the 2009's H1N1 swine flu and 2003's severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreaks. However, research aiming to examine public willingness to wear (WTW) face masks in Pakistan are scarce. The current research aims to overcome this research void and contributes by expanding the theoretical mechanism of theory of planned behavior (TPB) to include three novel dimensions (risk perceptions of the pandemic, perceived benefits of face masks, and unavailability of face masks) to comp

Correlates of physical activity in a population-based sample of kidney cancer survivors: an application of the theory of planned behavior.

BackgroundOver half of kidney cancer survivors (KCS) are completely inactive and only a quarter are meeting physical activity (PA) guidelines. This highlights the need to identify and understand the determinants of PA in this understudied population. The purpose of this study is to determine the social cognitive correlates of PA intention and behavior in KCS using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB).MethodsAll 1,985 KCS diagnosed between 1996 and 2010 in Alberta, Canada were mailed a self-report survey that consisted of the Godin Leisure Time Exercise Questionnaire and standard TPB items for

Media literacy education and the awareness-verification gap: A theory of planned behavior perspective on Chinese adolescents' responses to online misinformation.

This study examines how Chinese high school students perceive and respond to online misinformation and how their responses are shaped by school, family, and wider social contexts. Four focus group discussions were conducted with 24 students aged 15-17 from two public high schools in a southeastern coastal city. Thematic analysis identified a gap between students' awareness of misinformation and their verification-related responses. Although participants generally approached online content with caution, verification was selective and more likely when information was perceived as personally rele

Pet funeral service intentions in urban China: The roles of emotional attachment and perceived closeness in an extended theory of planned behavior.

China's urbanization has made companion-animal loss an increasingly salient source of grief, yet such grief often remains disenfranchised because of limited social recognition and ritual support. This study examines intentions to use formal pet funeral services in Chinese cities and identifies the psychological factors that shape such intentions. To ensure contextual relevance, we first conducted exploratory text mining of Weibo discussions on pet aftercare, grief expression, ritual needs, and service-related concerns. Building on these insights, we developed an extended Theory of Planned Beha
