Impact of electric field and strain on the electronic thermal conductivity of topological crystalline insulator SnTe (001).

Topological crystalline insulators (TCIs) are a class of materials with metallic surface states on high-symmetry crystal surfaces. TCIs discovered so far have cubic structures, which, compared to the layered structure of first-generation topological insulators such as [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], offer the potential for branched structures or strong coupling with other materials for large proximity effects. In the present work we implement low-energy [Formula: see text] theory and the Green's function technique on the tight-binding Hamiltonian to study the major electronic prop

Ultralow thermal conductivity of W-Janus bilayers (WXY: X, Y = S, Se, and Te) for thermoelectric devices.

Lattice thermal conductivity (κ) in tungsten dichalcogenide Janus (WXY, where X, Y = S, Se, and Te) monolayers and heterostructures (HSs) have been investigated using ab initio DFT simulations. Tungsten-based Janus monolayers show semiconducting behavior with the bandgap in the semiconducting range for WSSe (1.70 eV), WSTe (1.26 eV), and WSeTe (1.34 eV). When Janus monolayers are stacked to form HSs with weak van der Waals (vdW) interactions, the bandgap reduces to 0.19 eV, 0.40 eV, and 0.24 eV, respectively, for WSeTe/WSTe, WSSe/WSTe, and WSSe/WSeTe HSs. Thermal vibrational characteristics of

Ultralow thermal conductivity and thermally-deactivated electrical transport in a 1D silver array with alternating δ-bonds.

We report the synthesis of a (TMA)AgBr2 (TMA = tetramethylammonium) crystal, which comprises inorganic anionic chains of -(AgBr2)∝- stabilized by columnar stacks of organic TMA cations with a periodic arrangement of shorter and longer Ag(i)⋯Ag(i) bonds, even though all the Ag(i) ions are chemically equivalent. The presence of two chemically non-equivalent bridging Br ions is attributed to the primary cause of such an unusual arrangement, as clearly visualized in the charge density plot of (TMA)AgBr2 extracted from the theoretical calculations based on density functional theory. Remarkably, we

Ultralow Lattice Thermal Conductivity and High Thermoelectric Performance in Ge1-x-yBixCayTe with Ultrafine Ferroelectric Domain Structure.

GeTe and its derivatives emerging as a promising lead-free thermoelectric candidate have received extensive attention. Here, a new route was proposed that the minimization of κL in GeTe through considerable enhancement of acoustic phonon scattering by introducing ultrafine ferroelectric domain structure. We found that Bi and Ca dopants induce strong atomic strain disturbance in the GeTe matrix because of large differences in atom radius with host elements, leading to the formation of ultrafine ferroelectric domain structure. Furthermore, large strain field and mass fluctuation induced by Bi an

Variable characteristics of viscosity and thermal conductivity in peristalsis of magneto-Carreau nanoliquid with heat transfer irreversibilities.

BACKGROUND: Peristaltic is a basic way of fluid transportation in physiology, engineering and nuclear industry. Importance of peristalsis is due to its contraction and compulsion property of symmetric and asymmetric type channel walls. Another beauty of this mechanism is that the channel walls propagates and push the material along the tube/conduit channel walls. This mechanism shows its presence in physiology while food particles are transferred through esophagus and stomach, urine through intestines, spermatoza transportation in reproductive tract. In industry it is found in roller and finge

Development of High-Thermal-Conductivity Inhibitive Drilling Fluid with Nano-CuO and Cationically Modified Poly(Vinyl Alcohol).

This study addresses wellbore instability during drilling in water-sensitive formations by enhancing the heat-transfer performance of an inhibitive drilling fluid. CuO nanoparticles (NCs) were introduced into a drilling fluid containing cationically modified poly-(vinyl alcohol) (PVAG), which was synthesized by grafting 2,3-epoxypropyl trimethylammonium chloride (GTMAC) onto poly-(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). The compatibility between NCs and PVAG was evaluated, and the mechanism by which PVAG and NCs affected the inhibitory performance of drilling fluids was investigated. The results indicated that

Assessment of thermal conductivity in activated carbon adsorbents for liquid nitrogen-based cryo-adsorption vacuum pump applications.

This paper presents a method for measuring the thermal conductivity of activated carbon adsorbents at liquid nitrogen (LN2) temperature for LN2-based cryo-adsorption vacuum pumps. This method is simple, versatile, and adaptable to various sample geometries of material under evaluation, including powders, spheres, granules, and pellets. This method can also be applied to assess similar materials with thermal conductivity in the range of 0.1-1.5 W/(m K). The thermal conductivity was evaluated by establishing a temperature gradient across the LN2-cooled sample using controlled heat inputs. The me

Numerical simulation of burn injuries with temperature-dependent thermal conductivity and metabolism under different surface heat sources.

In the present paper, the phenomena of heat transport inside human forearm tissue are studied through a one-dimensional nonlinear bioheat transfer model under the influence of various boundary and interface conditions. In this study, we considered temperature-dependent thermal conductivity and metabolic heat to predict temperature distribution inside the forearm tissue. We have studied the temperature distribution inside inner tissue and bone because it has been found that burn injuries are mostly affected by layer thickness. The temperature distribution inside human forearm tissue is analyzed

Half-integer thermal conductance in integer quantum Hall states.

Considering a range of candidate quantum phases of matter, half-integer thermal conductance is believed to be an unambiguous evidence of non-Abelian states. It has been long known that such half-integer values arise due to the presence of Majorana edge modes, representing a significant step towards topological quantum computing. Here, we challenge this prevailing notion by presenting a comprehensive theoretical and experimental study where half-integer two-terminal thermal conductance plateau is realized employing integer quantum Hall states. Our proposed setup features a confined geometry of

Microphase Rivet-Reinforced Interfaces in PTFE Composites: Enabling High Thermal Conductivity and Dimensional Stability for High-Frequency Substrates.

Heat dissipation remains a formidable challenge for polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) based high-frequency substrates, as the integration of thermally conductive fillers like hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is often hindered by the intrinsic chemical inertness and ultra-low surface energy of PTFE. Herein, a soluble fluoroalkyl end-capped polyimide (FPI) precursor is developed. The amphipathic structure of FPI acts as an intermolecular bridge, facilitating the homogeneous dispersion of hydrophobic hBN within aqueous PTFE emulsions. Upon thermal imidization, in situ microphase "rivet" architectures e

Development and Validation of an Ammonia-Resistant Thermal-Conductivity Analyzer for In Situ Monitoring of NH3-Cracking-Processes.

Ammonia is increasingly considered a promising hydrogen carrier due to its high hydrogen density and well-established infrastructure. Monitoring ammonia cracking efficiency requires robust, continuous gas analysis across a wide concentration range, with resistance to corrosive gases. Conventional methods such as gas chromatography or mass spectrometry meet these requirements, but are costly and operationally complex. To address this gap, a Thermal Conductivity Analyzer (TCA) was developed based on an OEM module and validated for continuous in situ monitoring of ammonia cracking. The system inc

Electronic contribution of Frenkel defects to thermal conductivity in body centred cubic transition metals from first-principles study.

Body centred cubic (BCC) transition metals are of high interest for nuclear applications, where they are subject to high radiation damage, which causes the material's properties to decay. Measuring the electrical and thermal properties of these materials after irradiation poses challenges due to sample size, activity, and cost of running the experiments. Traditional methods of measuring thermal properties require bulk samples. Newer measuring techniques were developed for smaller samples, but they have their limitations. Therefore, a new First Principles' method was developed to predict the el

Anharmonicity-driven low lattice thermal conductivity and high thermoelectric response in monolayer CeX2 (X = O, S, Se, Te).

Rare-earth materials drive technological innovations from clean energy to quantum devices, yet their two-dimensional (2D) derivatives remain largely unexplored. Here, we decode the thermal and electronic transport mechanisms in 2D rare-earth dichalcogenides CeX2 (X = O, S, Se, Te) through first-principles calculations, temperature-dependent effective potentials theory, anharmonic lattice dynamics, and Boltzmann transport theory. Both ab initio molecular dynamics simulations and finite-temperature phonon spectra demonstrate that CeX2 compounds are structurally stable. In this class of materials

Synthesis, Thermal Stability, and Ionic Conductivity of Phenyl-Extended Viologen Ditriflate Salts: Tailoring Properties via Oxyethylene Chain Length.

Six new phenyl-extended viologen salts with oxyethylene groups paired with triflate anions (OTF) have been synthesized using anionic ring-opening and ring-closing reactions (ANRORC) and metathesis reactions with LiOTf salts. The salts, which contain terminal oxyethylene chains of varying lengths ((CH2CH2O) n , n = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 7), are named PEOn-OTF. These materials exhibit a fluorescence response and possess high thermal stability, with processing windows up to approximately 300 °C, as confirmed by thermogravimetric analysis. While samples with short chain lengths (n = 1, 2, and 3) unde

Exploring dual solutions and thermal conductivity in hybrid nanofluids: a comparative study of Xue and Hamilton-Crosser models.

Hybrid nanofluids show great potential for heat transport applications such as solar thermal systems, car cooling systems, heat sinks, and thermal energy storage. They possess better thermal stability and properties compared to standard nanofluids. In this study, a base fluid, methanol, is injected into an electrically conducting heat-generating/absorbing disk of permeable boundary, and dual solutions are obtained. Two alternative models, Xue and Hamilton-Crosser are considered, and their thermal conductivities are contrasted. Furthermore, thermal radiation and ohmic heating are also considere

Ultra-Low Thermal Conductivity in Mixed Anionic CuTe2Cl: Strong Antibonding States and Lone Pair-Induced Te Ring Puckering.

Metal chalcohalides, an emerging class of mixed-anion compounds, have recently garnered increasing interest as they unite the exceptional stability of metal chalcogenides with the versatile electronic tunability of metal halides. Here, we synthesize single- and polycrystalline CuTe2Cl, a two-dimensional layered metal chalcohalide, which exhibits intrinsically ultralow lattice thermal conductivity (κlat) of ∼0.54-0.24 W m-1K-1 between 300 and 600 K along the layered growth direction.
