Gradient all-nanostructured aerogel fibers for enhanced thermal insulation and mechanical properties.

Lightweight, nanoporous aerogel fibers are crucial for personal thermal management and specialized heat protection. However, wet-spinning methods, exemplified by aramid aerogels, inevitably form a dense outer layer, significantly reducing the volume fraction of efficient thermal barrier nanovoids and limiting the development of ultimate thermal resistance in fibers. Herein, we develop a microfluidic spinning method to prepare gradient all-nanostructure aramid aerogel fibers (GAFs). Benefiting from the simultaneous shear alignment and diffusion dilution of a good solvent within the channels, th

Liquid Metal Composites with Enhanced Thermal Conductivity and Stability Using Molecular Thermal Linker.

Gallium-based liquid metal (LM) composite with metallic fillers is an emerging class of thermal interface materials (TIMs), which are widely applied in electronics and power systems to improve their performance. In situ alloying between gallium and many metallic fillers like copper and silver, however, leads to a deteriorated composite stability. This paper presents an interfacial engineering approach using 3-chloropropyltriethoxysilane (CPTES) to serve as effective thermal linkers and diffusion barriers at the copper-gallium oxide interfaces in the LM matrix, achieving an enhancement in both

Interplay between thermal contact and hormonal activity: A kinetic analysis on smartphone-induced endocrine disruption.

Endocrine toxicology has largely overlooked persistent, behavior-linked thermal microenvironments established by smartphones, a phenomenon characterized by near-continuous human-thermal interaction. In this review, we propose a mechanistic model of the thermokinetic endocrine interface to explain how heat from smartphones might alter endocrine-relevant systems. Offering a new view on chemical interactions with consumer devices, we posit that localized thermal pulses, not continuous low-dose exposure, can accelerate the migration of polymer additives, influence desorption and diffusion dynamics

Thermophoresis induced by photothermal shock alters reversal potential and capacitance in neurons.

Laser-induced thermal shock is widely encountered in neuroscience and biology, yet its effects on cellular thermodynamics remain poorly understood. Using whole-cell patch-clamp recordings paired with two-photon laser stimulation, we reveal that photothermal shock causes a pronounced depolarizing shift in the potassium channel reversal potential in cortical neurons-a deviation from classical Nernstian predictions. We propose that thermophoresis-driven ion fluxes within intra- and extracellular spaces disrupt conventional thermodynamic equilibria, necessitating a revision of the traditional Nern

Motion of a microswimmer in a lattice of obstacles: Effect of thermal fluctuations.

Microswimmers are often found in heterogeneous or crowded environments and show interesting transport behaviors like trapping or escaping in the presence of hydrodynamic interactions and thermal fluctuations. Studying such behaviors helps us to understand infection spreading and plant-microbial interactions and builds applications like targeted drug delivery. To explain the impact of thermal fluctuations, in terms of Péclet number and packing fraction, on the transport behavior of microswimmers in the presence of obstacles, we consider a rigid spherical squirmer swimming in an infinite matrix

Designing active mats based on cellulose acetate/polycaprolactone core/shell structures with different release kinetics.

Core/shell electrospun mats based on cellulose acetate (CA) and polycaprolactone (PCL) were developed as novel active materials for releasing quercetin (Quer) and curcumin (Cur). The effect of polymeric uniaxial and coaxial electrospun systems and the chemical structures of Quer and Cur on the structural, thermal, and mass transfer properties of the developed mats were investigated. Release modelling indicated that the diffusion of the active agents from the uniaxial PCL fibers was highly dependent on the type of food simulant. Higher diffusion coefficients were obtained for both active agents

Unsteady MHD transport of a tangent-hyperbolic ternary hybrid nanofluid over a permeable stretching surface with variable thermal conductivity and nonlinear radiation.

This work is a numerical exploration of the unsteady MHD transport of a ternary hybrid nanofluid of tangent-hyperbolic flow over a permeable stretching surface. The working fluid consists of [Formula: see text] Cu, and [Formula: see text] nanoparticles dispersed in ethylene glycol. The model includes nonlinear radiation, variable thermal conductivity, Joule heating, and Darcy-Forchheimer porous effects. The governing equations of partial differential equations are reduced to similarity equations of ordinary differential equations and solved by MATLAB BVP5C. Simulations show that an increase in

Heat-induced transformation of CdSe-CdS-ZnS core-multishell quantum dots by Zn diffusion into inner layers.

In this work, we investigate the thermal evolution of CdSe-CdS-ZnS core-multishell quantum dots (QDs) in situ using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Starting at a temperature of approximately 250 °C, Zn diffusion into inner layers takes place together with simultaneous evaporation of particularly Cd and S. As a result of this transformation, CdxZn1-xSe-CdyZn1-yS core-shell QDs are obtained.

Heat transport in laminar flow of erythrocyte suspensions.

Measurements of thermal conductivity were made in laminar flow of dog and turkey erythrocyte suspensions in a stainless stell tube of about 1 mm ID. These measurements were independent of the shear rate, showing that the red cell motion relative to plasma in flowing blood had no effect on the heat transfer. Measurements of thermal conductivity were further made in suspensions of polystyrene spheres of 100 mum and were found to be dependent upon the shear rate. The Graetz solution corresponding to uniform wall temperature was used for determining the value of thermal conductivity in an apparatu

Thermal Inactivation of Penicillin Acylase from Escherichia coli: Rate-Limiting Step and Role of Protein Aggregation.

Using kinetic and structural methods - differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic laser light scattering, turbidimetry, and mathematical modeling - a comprehensive study of the process of thermal inactivation of penicillin acylase (PA) from Escherichia coli was conducted. The first step of the process is denaturation of the protein globule. As denatured protein accumulates, start aggregates are formed, and after reaching a critical amount, rapid clustering of aggregates (formation of clusters) occurs, which proceeds in the kinetic regime of diffusion-limited cluster-cluster aggregation. A dist

Effects of Injection Temperature and Well Connectivity on Reservoir Stability and Storage Efficiency in Shale Formations.

The deployment of CO2 injection in shale reservoirs for simultaneous carbon sequestration is constrained by complex thermo-hydromechanical (THM) coupling effects. This study establishes a fully coupled two-dimensional numerical model to systematically investigate the multifield evolution and system stability under varying CO2 injection temperatures and well connectivity configurations. Simulation results demonstrate that good connectivity fundamentally dictates the fluid migration path: while fracture connections significantly enhance the CO2 sweep efficiency by creating preferential flow path

Chitosan-based intelligent polymeric networks for site-specific colon medication delivery: A comprehensive study on controlled release of diloxanide furoate and network formation dynamics.

Oral medications are prone to gastric degradation and enzymatic inactivation, diminishing their efficacy. This study investigates a solution by developing intelligent polymeric networks, incorporating chitosan, methacrylic acid, N, N, methylene bisacrylamide, and montmorillonite clay, to enable the controlled release of Diloxanide Furoate (DF), an anti-protozoal drug. Employing a swelling-assisted diffusion technique, drug loading percentages varied from 63.96 % to 76.82 % among different formulations. Increased chitosan and methacrylic acid content enhanced drug loading, while N, N, methylene

Cerebral blood flow dynamics and head-of-bed changes in the setting of subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Head-of-bed (HOB) elevation is usually restricted in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). The goal of this study is to correlate HOB changes (0° and 90°) with cerebral blood flow using transcranial Doppler (TCD) and thermal diffusion probe in SAH patients. Thirteen patients with SAH were prospectively enrolled in the study. Eight patients underwent placement of a thermal diffusion probe for regional CBF measurement. CBF values were measured with the patients in flat (0°) and upright sitting positions (90°) at days 3, 7, and 10. The average increase in blood flow velocity whe

Temperature and tissue damage distributions during selective laser hyperthermia of breast cancer models: Effects of different boundary conditions.

This paper deals with the simulation of the selective laser hyperthermia treatment of breast cancer. The physical model refers to a 2-D axi-symmetric (r-z) bio-heat transfer process due to a laser radiation that propagates inside breast tissues containing a spherical tumor loaded with gold nanoparticles. The corresponding bio-heat transfer process is governed by the equation of Pennes, while the laser light propagation is modeled with the diffusion approximation. The solution of this opto-thermal problem was obtained using the Finite Element Method (FEM), whereas the thermal damage that occurs

Optical fluid and biomolecule transport with thermal fields.

A long standing goal is the direct optical control of biomolecules and water for applications ranging from microfluidics over biomolecule detection to non-equilibrium biophysics. Thermal forces originating from optically applied, dynamic microscale temperature gradients have shown to possess great potential to reach this goal. It was demonstrated that laser heating by a few Kelvin can generate and guide water flow on the micrometre scale in bulk fluid, gel matrices or ice without requiring any lithographic structuring. Biomolecules on the other hand can be transported by thermal gradients, a m

Solvent dehydration with structurally engineered nanoporous graphene oxide membranes.

Pervaporation provides a selective route to high purity solvents that are indispensable for high precision industry. Here, we introduce structurally engineered nanoporous graphene oxide membranes (N-GOm), obtained by heterogeneous co-assembly of nanoporous graphene oxide (NPGO) and GO nanosheets. The NPGO nanosheet characterized by nanoporous sp3 carbon domains and oxygen functionalized groups, synergistically increases water affinity, effectively elevating the water adsorption energies (Eads). The N-GOm integrates defective sp3/sp2 heterogeneous stacked cavity to facilitate water transport, e

A generalized multilayer reaction-diffusion model for tumor dynamics under hyperthermic therapy with spatial heterogeneity.

Local hyperthermia is an effective treatment for advanced malignant tumors, whose multilayer structure and physiological heterogeneity strongly influence their response to therapy. In this work, a generalized multilayer reaction-diffusion model is developed to study tumor-volume dynamics under localized hyperthermic treatment. The tumor is represented as a set of interacting biological layers, allowing spatial variation in key parameters such as diffusion and proliferation. The model is formulated with appropriate initial, interface and boundary conditions and solved using the finite element m

Experimental Study and Model Simulation of the Effective Thermal Conductivity of Polymer/Carbonaceous Nanocomposites.

Improving the thermal conductivity of polymer/carbonaceous nanocomposites is still an interesting topic and is affected by a number of factors, such as polymer/nanofiller interaction, dispersion quality and agglomerate formation. In the present work, several polymer/nanocomposite types based on two different linear low-density polyethylenes (LLDPEs), as well as polylactic acid (PLA), reinforced with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) or a combination of CNTs/carbon nanofibers (CNFs) with graphene oxide (GO) at various loadings were investigated.
