Influence of temperature during incubation on the mRNA levels of temperature sensitive ion channels in the brain of broiler chicken embryos.

Thermosensation is crucial for the survival of any organism. In animals, changes in brain temperature are detected via sensory neurons, their cell bodies are located in the trigeminal ganglia. Transient receptor potential (TRP) ion channels are the largest temperature sensing family. In mammals, 11 thermoTRPs are known, as in poultry, there are only three. This research further elucidates TRP mRNA expression in the brain of broiler embryo's. Three incubation treatments were conducted on 400 eggs each: the control (C) at 37.6 °C; T1 deviating from C by providing a + 1 °C heat stimuli during emb

Visualizing cold spots: TRPM8-expressing sensory neurons and their projections.

Environmental stimuli such as temperature and pressure are sensed by dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons. DRG neurons are heterogeneous, but molecular markers that identify unique functional subpopulations are mainly lacking. ThermoTRPs are members of the transient receptor potential family of ion channels and are gated by shifts in temperature. TRPM8 is activated by cooling, and TRPM8-deficient mice have severe deficits in cool thermosensation. The anatomical and functional properties of TRPM8-expressing fibers have not been not comprehensively investigated. We use mice engineered to express t

Human thermal sensitivity drifts at extreme temperatures.

Humans continuously adapt their behavior to ambient temperature, yet little is known about how they integrate distributed thermal sensations into a unified perception. This study investigates how people perceive changes in whole-body thermal environments, particularly under extreme conditions. In a between-subjects design conducted between November 2023 and April 2024, 51 participants compared the temperature felt in four independently controlled climate chambers. To generate meaningful perceptual contrasts, the temperatures varied dynamically within specific ranges: the mild condition involve

Cortical coding of gustatory and thermal signals in active licking mice.

Eating behaviours are influenced by the integration of gustatory, olfactory and somatosensory signals, which all contribute to the perception of flavour. Although extensive research has explored the neural correlates of taste in the gustatory cortex (GC), less is known about its role in encoding thermal information. This study investigates the encoding of oral thermal and chemosensory signals by GC neurons compared to the oral somatosensory cortex. In this study we recorded the spiking activity of more than 900 GC neurons and 500 neurons from the oral somatosensory cortex in mice allowed to fr

An olfactory neuron responds stochastically to temperature and modulates Caenorhabditis elegans thermotactic behavior.

Caenorhabditis elegans navigates thermal gradients by using a behavioral strategy that is regulated by a memory of its cultivation temperature (T(c)). At temperatures above or around the T(c), animals respond to temperature changes by modulating the rate of stochastic reorientation events. The bilateral AFD neurons have been implicated as thermosensory neurons, but additional thermosensory neurons are also predicted to play a role in regulating thermotactic behaviors. Here, we show that the AWC olfactory neurons respond to temperature. Unlike AFD neurons, which respond to thermal stimuli with

[Cold intolerance syndrome--a review].

Cold sensitivity is defined as a complex of symptoms occurring after injuries, which patophysiology remains obscure, but is probably of multifactorial nature, and which may be a cause of severe complaints and disability of the hand when exposed to the cold. The symptoms include numbness and stiffness of fingers, pain, discolouration (paleness, cyanosis), swelling and reduction of grip strength. This disorder affects more frequently upper than lower extremity, may develop after variety of injuries and elective operations, but the most commonly occurs in patients with replanted fingers or hands.

Courting and noncourting male red-sided garter snakes, Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis: plasma melatonin levels and the effects of pinealectomy.

Previous studies found that pinealectomy of male Canadian red-sided garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis) in the autumn, before prolonged exposure to low temperatures (hibernation), significantly impaired the expression of courtship behavior upon emergence in the spring. Additionally, pinealectomized animals with a disrupted diel cycle of plasma melatonin did not court while those exhibiting a more typical diel pattern did. These results suggested that the pineal gland functions in the transduction of a temperature cue which stimulates courtship. To test this hypothesis, we pinealecto

The basis of the paradoxical disturbance of temperature perception in ciguatera poisoning.

The basis of the paradoxical reversal of temperature perception commonly described in ciguatera poisoning has never been defined. The sensations experienced are described as tingling, burning, "dry ice-like", smarting, and "electric". Studies have demonstrated that these types of sensations are generated in C-polymodal nociceptor fibers in skin and deep structures and the intensity of these sensations depends on the intensity of discharge in these fibers. Ciguatoxin causes persistent sodium channel opening in nerve membrane resulting in oscillations in membrane potentials and runs of spontaneo

Subtype-Specific Tubulin Post-Translational Modification Profiles Predict Differential Axonal Stability in DRG Neurons.

Sensory neurons of the dorsal root ganglia (DRG) comprise a heterogeneous population that transduces diverse somatosensory modalities, including proprioception, mechanosensation, thermosensation, and nociception. Although sensory neuron subtypes differ in function and transcriptional profiles, whether these neurons also differ in axonal microtubule properties remains unclear. Here, we asked whether distinct DRG neuronal subtypes exhibit subtype-specific axonal tubulin post-translational modifications (PTMs), which have been implicated in regulating microtubule structure and function. Using est

Assessing the role of glycosphingolipids in the phenotype severity of Fabry disease mouse model.

Fabry disease is caused by deficient activity of α-galactosidase A, an enzyme that hydrolyzes the terminal α-galactosyl moieties from glycolipids and glycoproteins, and subsequent accumulation of glycosphingolipids, mainly globotriaosylceramide (Gb3), globotriaosylsphingosine (lyso-Gb3), and galabiosylceramide. However, there is no known link between these compounds and disease severity. In this study, we compared Gb3 isoforms (various fatty acids) and lyso-Gb3 analogs (various sphingosine modifications) in two strains of Fabry disease mouse models: a pure C57BL/6 (B6) background or a B6/129 m

Dermatomal laser-evoked potentials: a diagnostic approach to the dorsal root. Norm data in healthy volunteers and changes in patients with radiculopathy.

We conducted a cross-sectional study of 40 radiculopathy patients in comparison with norm data from healthy subjects using a new electrophysiological method. Early manifestations of dorsal root impairment escape objective diagnosis by conventional somatosensory-evoked potentials due to the overlapping innervation of the affected dermatome by thickly myelinated mechanoreceptive afferents projecting to adjacent intact roots. Evidence suggested less intersegmental overlap for thermonociceptive afferents rendering laser-evoked potentials (LEP) sensitive to monosegmental dorsal root damage. Therefo

Exploring somatosensory innervation of the human lip: A focus on the vermilion.

BACKGROUND: The lips are a vital component of the face and are densely innervated to perform various functions. The lip edges are covered with mucocutaneous tissue called vermilion which is particularly receptive to touch and temperature. The aim of this study was to investigate the somatosensory innervation of human lips, focusing on sensory corpuscles and the presence of mechano-gated (ASIC2, PIEZO2, and TRPV4) and thermosensing (TRPV1, TRPM2, and RPM8) ion channels within them. METHODS: Twelve intact lips (6 upper and 6 lower) were obtained from non-embalmed frozen cadavers (five females a

Outdoor thermal perception at a beach within a subtropical marine park.

Subtropical coastal regions are increasingly important public spaces within urban systems, yet microclimatic conditions and associated thermal outcomes of beaches and coastal areas remain understudied despite growing climate-related heat risks. The field study on Hailing Island, China, combined micrometeorological measurements with thermal perception assessment using thermal indices, including Physiologically Equivalent Temperature (PET), modified PET (mPET), Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI), and a human energy budget (EB) approach, to characterize the beach microclimate and evaluate hum

Thermosensory predictive coding underpins an illusion of pain.

The human brain has a remarkable ability to learn and update its beliefs about the world. Here, we investigate how thermosensory learning shapes our subjective experience of temperature and the misperception of pain in response to harmless thermal stimuli. Through computational modeling, we demonstrate that the brain uses a probabilistic predictive coding scheme to update beliefs about temperature changes based on their uncertainty. We find that these expectations directly modulate the perception of pain in the thermal grill illusion. Quantitative microstructural brain imaging further revealed

Somatosensory Profile of Central Post Stroke Pain of Thalamic Origin: Findings of a Quantitative Sensory Testing Study.

INTRODUCTION: Central post stroke pain (CPSP) is attributed to vascular lesions of the central somatosensory system, including the thalamus. OBJECTIVE: A better characterisation of clinical findings in patients with CPSP after thalamic stroke can facilitate research and treatment of this refractory pain syndrome. We aimed to quantify somatosensory abnormalities in CPSP patients after thalamic stroke. METHODS: Sixteen patients with CPSP after thalamic stroke, 14 patients with a history of thalamic stroke without any pain (stroke control patients, SCP) and 12 healthy controls (HC) underwent de

How effective is manual palpation in detecting subtle temperature differences?

In the management of diabetic, neuropathic sequelae, namely ulceration and Charcot's arthropathy, appropriate quantification of inflammation is critically important in predicting future events and charting current progress. This article evaluates the ability of the physician to quantify subtle differences in temperature through manual palpation. The "laying on of hands" in a clinical setting is a necessary, crucial component of the doctor-patient relationship; however, our data suggest that manual palpation, even in a controlled environment, may not be an objective means to assess temperature,
