Transcranial alternating current stimulation in the theta band but not in the delta band modulates the comprehension of naturalistic speech in noise.

Auditory cortical activity entrains to speech rhythms and has been proposed as a mechanism for online speech processing. In particular, neural activity in the theta frequency band (4-8 Hz) tracks the onset of syllables which may aid the parsing of a speech stream. Similarly, cortical activity in the delta band (1-4 Hz) entrains to the onset of words in natural speech and has been found to encode both syntactic as well as semantic information. Such neural entrainment to speech rhythms is not merely an epiphenomenon of other neural processes, but plays a functional role in speech processing: m

Sensory mismatch induces autonomic responses associated with hippocampal theta waves in rats.

Hippocampal (HIP) theta power increases during sensory mismatch, which has been suggested to induce motion sickness with autonomic abnormality (Zou et al., 2009 [29]). To investigate relationships between hippocampal theta rhythm and autonomic functions, theta waves in the HIP and electrocardiograms (ECGs) were recorded during sensory mismatch by backward translocation in awake rats. The rats were placed on a treadmill affixed to a motion stage that was translocated along a figure 8-shaped track. The rats were trained to run forward on the treadmill at the same speed as that of forward translo

Huperzine a restores cortico-hippocampal functional connectivity after bilateral AMPA lesion of the nucleus basalis of meynert.

Huperzine A (Hup-A), an alkaloid isolated from Huperzia serrata (Thunb.) Trevis. (Lycopodiaceae), acts as a selective inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase and shows memory-enhancing properties. Although Hup-A has shown promising expectation for Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients, controlled clinical trials supporting its use are limited. The aim of this work was to study in vivo, in an animal model of AD, the pharmacological activity of systemic administration of Hup-A on cortex- and hippocampus-dependent memory. With this purpose, a set of experiments was planned to evaluate attention, learning,

Disrupted hippocampal synchrony following maternal immune activation in a rat model.

Maternal immune activation (MIA) is a risk factor for schizophrenia and other neurodevelopmental disorders. MIA in rats models a number of the brain and behavioral changes that are observed in schizophrenia, including impaired memory. Recent studies in the MIA model have shown that the firing of the hippocampal place cells that are involved in memory processes appear relatively normal, but with abnormalities in the temporal ordering of firing. In this study, we re-analyzed data from prior hippocampal electrophysiological recordings of MIA and control animals to determine whether temporal dysfu

EEG spectra in dyslexic and control boys during resting conditions.

We studied the resting eyes open and eyes closed EEG in carefully screened samples of 9-13-year-old dyslexic and control boys within a 2-cohort cross-validation design with repeat testing 1-3 years later. We found: no difference between groups in delta or theta activity in either cohort or in repeat testing 1-3 years later; in the dyslexics, decreased beta (19-24 c/sec) activity at bilateral central, parietal and mid-temporal leads referenced to vertex; inconsistent group differences in the alpha band: the first cohort dyslexics had lower alpha power than did the controls, but there was no gro

Clinical use of Electroencephalography in the Assessment of Acute Thermal Pain: A Narrative Review Based on Articles From 2009 to 2019.

Nowadays, no practical system has successfully been able to decode and predict pain in clinical settings. The inability of some patients to verbally express their pain creates the need for a tool that could objectively assess pain in these individuals. Neuroimaging techniques combined with machine learning are seen as possible candidates for the identification of pain biomarkers. This review aimed to address the potential use of electroencephalographic features as predictors of acute experimental pain. Twenty-six studies using only thermal stimulations were identified using a PubMed and Scopus

A review of theta oscillation and its functional correlates.

Theta is an extensively studied oscillation of the nervous system, but there is only a paucity of reviews on the subject. A review of specifically the cognitive-affective correlates of the theta oscillation is currently unavailable. The present review aims to fill this gap. This review shows that theta-based hippocampal binding brings together the environmentally triggered multimodal elements of episodes or scenes, make multimodal sensory/perceptual and motor processing, facilitatory and inhibitory attention, navigation and episodic memory possible. Hippocampus is centrally located in a select

[THE INTEGRATIVE LEVEL OF THE HIERARCHICAL SYSTEM OF SPATIAL ORIENTATION OF ANIMALS].

The purpose of this review is to analyze the current knowledge about the higher, integrative level of the physiological system of orientation of animals in space. The significance of the study of this level caused by the fact that its disruption can cause deterioration of the capacity for spatial orientation (spatial agnosia) which is an important sign of some diseases of the brain, and in particular Alzheimer's disease. In recent decades, the main functional components of integration of information on space position of animals were discovered. The significance of these discoveries was reflect

EEG's in an alcohol detoxification and treatment center.

EEG's were carried out on two hundred and one (201) alcoholics admitted to a four week treatment program. The majority were grossly intoxicated on admission and presented the usual differential problems during the first few days of hospitalization. In spite of therapeutic doses of medication before testing, 85% had totally normal EEG's and only 5.5% revealed clearly abnormal tracings. Of those for whom repeat records were later obtained, four of six with an abnormality showed a persistance of abnormality suggesting underlying organic dysfunction and not just "intoxication". EEG has a place in

Pretrial Theta Band Activity Affects Context-dependent Modulation of Response Inhibition.

The ability to inhibit a prepotent response is a crucial prerequisite of goal-directed behavior. So far, research on response inhibition has mainly examined these processes when there is little to no cognitive control during the decision to respond. We manipulated the "context" in which response inhibition has to be exerted (i.e., a controlled or an automated context) by combining a Simon task with a go/no-go task and focused on theta band activity. To investigate the role of "context" in response inhibition, we also examined how far theta band activity in the pretrial period modulates context

Interhemispheric theta coherence in the hippocampus for successful object-location memory in human intracranial encephalography.

Our knowledge concerning visual-spatial memory related phase synchronization within the ipsilateral hippocampus or between contralateral hippocampi during memory encoding in humans is currently limited. The present study examines the relationship between phase synchronization within the hippocampus and memory performance during virtual navigation in an object-location memory navigation task using intracranial depth electrodes in human subjects. Specifically, we focus on the phase synchronization ratio between periods when the target object was in and out of visual focus. Our findings indicate

The neural correlates of movement imagery performance in Parkinson's disease: Evidence of impairment and compensation.

Parkinson's Disease (PD) leads to significant deficits in the physical execution of movements. These deficits may stem in part from impaired processing of action representations, which are integral to the planning, monitoring, and execution of voluntary movement. Action representations can be examined using movement imagery. Here we examine whether PD affects movement imagery at the level of behaviour and neural activity. In particular, 20 people with PD and 20 controls completed a movement imagery task while electroencephalographic activity was recorded. Our data analysis focused on activity

Chemogenetic activation and inhibition of CaMKⅡα-positive neurons in the dorsal hippocampus modulate spatial working memory and hippocampus-dependent memory in the hemiparkinsonian rat.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is frequently associated with cognitive impairments, especially deficits in working memory and hippocampus-dependent memory. However, the contribution of dorsal hippocampus (dHipp) Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase Ⅱ α (CaMKⅡα)-positive neurons to these deficits remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the impacts of chemogenetic modulation of dHipp CaMKⅡα-positive neurons on cognitive function, hippocampal theta rhythm, and monoamine levels in both sham-operated and unilateral 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-lesioned rats. 6-OHDA lesions of the medial forebra

Spectrum Degradation of Hippocampal LFP During Euthanasia.

The hippocampal local field potential (LFP) exhibits a strong correlation with behavior. During rest, the theta rhythm is not prominent, but during active behavior, there are strong rhythms in the theta, theta harmonics, and gamma ranges. With increasing running velocity, theta, theta harmonics and gamma increase in power and in cross-frequency coupling, suggesting that neural entrainment is a direct consequence of the total excitatory input. While it is common to study the parametric range between the LFP and its complementing power spectra between deep rest and epochs of high running velocit

Precuneus Failures in Subjects of the PSEN1 E280A Family at Risk of Developing Alzheimer's Disease Detected Using Quantitative Electroencephalography.

BACKGROUND: Presenilin-1 (PSEN1) mutations are the most common cause of familial early onset Alzheimer's disease (AD). The PSEN1 E280A (E280A) mutation has an autosomal dominant inheritance and is involved in the production of amyloid-β. The largest family group of carriers with E280A mutation is found in Antioquia, Colombia. The study of mutation carriers provides a unique opportunity to identify brain changes in stages previous to AD. Electroencephalography (EEG) is a low cost and minimally invasiveness technique that enables the following of brain changes in AD. OBJECTIVE: To examine how p

Changes in brain rhythms and connectivity tracking fear acquisition and reversal.

Fear conditioning is used to investigate the neural bases of threat and anxiety, and to understand their flexible modifications when the environment changes. This study aims to examine the temporal evolution of brain rhythms using electroencephalographic signals recorded in healthy volunteers during a protocol of Pavlovian fear conditioning and reversal. Power changes and Granger connectivity in theta, alpha, and gamma bands are investigated from neuroelectrical activity reconstructed on the cortex. Results show a significant increase in theta power in the left (contralateral to electrical sho

Frontal theta and beta oscillations during lower-limb movement in Parkinson's disease.

OBJECTIVES: Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) have deficits in lower-limb functions such as gait, which involves both cognitive and motor dysfunction. In PD, theta and beta brain rhythms are associated with cognitive and motor functions, respectively. We tested the hypothesis that PD patients with lower-limb abnormalities would exhibit abnormal theta and beta rhythms in the mid-frontal cortical region during lower-limb action. METHODS: This study included thirty-nine participants; 13 PD patients with FOG (PDFOG+), 13 without FOG (PDFOG-), and 13 demographically-matched controls. We recor

Apneic seizures in the newborn.

Electroclinical features of convulsive apnea and its relation to the behavioral state were described on the basis of polygraphic recordings from 21 newborns with various underlying disorders, including perinatal anoxia, purulent meningitis, and intracranial bleeding. The most frequent ictal discharges were rhythmic alpha waves, but other types of discharges, such as repeated sharp waves, rhythmic theta waves, delta waves, and repeated paroxysmal wave complexes, were also frequently seen. The area where the ictal discharges initially occurred or were most prominent was the temporal area, sugges

Theta-modulated oscillatory transcranial direct current stimulation over posterior parietal cortex improves associative memory.

Associative memory (AM) reflects the ability to remember and retrieve multiple pieces of information bound together thus enabling complex episodic experiences. Despite growing interest in the use of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) for the modulation of AM, there are inconsistent evidence regarding its benefits. An alternative to standard constant tDCS could be the application of frequency-modulated tDCS protocols, that mimic natural function-relevant brain rhythms. Here, we show the effects of anodal tDCS oscillating in theta rhythm (5 Hz; 1.5 ± 0.1 mA) versus constant anodal tD
