Contact dermatitis among hairdressers is common. In The Netherlands, registered sick leave for hand dermatitis among hairdressers rose from 21,050 days in 1986 to 54,293 in 1991. In a survey among 45 hairdressers in 5 different salons, 12 had a history of hand dermatitis and 16 showed moderate to severe hand dermatitis. Commercial use of quantum dots (GDs) will lead to their entry into aquatic environments. This study examines the characteristics and stability of CdTe QDs with thioglycolate capping ligands in water as well as their removal by alum salts. The capping ligands of QDs are a key factor in determining their fate in water. Protonated thioglycolate capping ligands cause QDs to aggregate. A case of osteomyelitis of the mandible caused by actinomyces infection is described. Gram stain and cultures of the discharge in fluid thioglycolate medium and blood agar, as well as an analysis of the biochemical properties of the causative organism with API system, indicated the infection was caused by A israelii. Lesions in both hard and soft tissues responded to chemotherapy with cephalexin, minocycline, and aminobenzylpenicillin and drainage of the pus from the cutaneous abscesses.

Zymosan (400 microgram) and thioglycollate medium (0.1 ml of 2.4% w/v) have each been shown to induce a chronic inflammation when injected into the hamstring muscle of the mouse. The inflammation is characterized by an increase in muscle weight and N-acetylglycosaminidase concentrations. The response is not inhibited by oral treatment with hydrocortisone, dexamethasone or naproxen, but is inhibited by the local injection of methylprednisolone. A photoluminescent II-VI group semiconductor nanocrystal (NC)-based signaling platform composed of thioglycolic acid capped CdS NCs and acetylcholinesterase-acetylthiocholine enzyme catalytic reaction system was developed that was shown to be highly sensitive to nerve agents and toxic organophosphate pesticides with detection limits down to sub-nM levels. This new sensing protocol does not require troublesome conjugation of biomacromolecules onto the surface of NCs.

The size dependence of the temperature coefficient (sensitivity) of the photoluminescence (PL) peak position of CdTe quantum dots stabilized by thioglycolic acid in aqueous solution has been investigated. Temperature sensitivity increases as the average radius of CdTe quantum dots decreases. This must be taken into account in the design of solar light concentrators and light-emmiting diode-monitors as well as other technologies in which a fine tuning of the light emission is important.
