Pedicle and spinal canal parameters of the lower thoracic and lumbar vertebrae in the achondroplast population.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective morphometric population study. OBJECTIVE: To characterize pedicle and spinal canal morphology of the achondroplastic lower thoracic and lumbar vertebrae and to suggest dimensions for improving pedicle screw selection and placement. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Although morphometric population studies exist for various races, to our knowledge, no such analysis has been made in achondroplastic patients. METHODS: With computer software, we measured pedicle parameters on the computed tomography images of 19 adult achondroplastic patients. RESULTS: Pedicle and chord l

Bartsocas-Papas syndrome with fusion of the lips and posterior fusion defects of the thoracic vertebrae.

Bartsocas-Papas syndrome is a rare popliteal pterygial syndrome with multiple anomalies including microcephaly, facial clefts, filiform bands, ankyloblepharon, syndactyly, and other ectodermal anomalies. Affected infants usually die perinatally. The authors present an 8-month-old female infant with manifestations of this syndrome and some additional traits including fusion of the lips, intraoral filiform bands, alopecia totalis, and posterior fusion failure of the vertebrae. The fused lips were opened by incising the fibrotic bands closing her mouth. Details of this patient and a brief review

Probiotic Prophylaxis for Enterococcus cecorum Prevalence in the Free Thoracic Vertebra of Broiler Chickens.

Enterococcus cecorum has become a significant pathogen of broilers and broiler breeders worldwide, and there are few effective prevention, treatment, or control measures. Improved, preferably nonantibiotic tools are needed to control the disease. Two pen trials were conducted to assess the effectiveness of a day-of-age probiotic and a continuous direct fed microbial (DFM) in preventing colonization of the spleen and free thoracic vertebra after challenge with pathogenic E. cecorum in commercial broiler chickens. In Experiment 1, three treatment groups were administered either no treatment (cha

Formation of the vertebral arches of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar vertebrae in early human foetuses.

Fusion of the neural arches was studied in 6 serially sectioned human foetuses aged 9 and 10 weeks. In foetuses of 9 weeks, the completion of arches was observed in the cervical, upper thoracic, and middle thoracic regions of the vertebral column. During the 10th week of development, fusion of neural processes progresses in the lower thoracic and upper three lumbar vertebrae.

Ectopic primary type A thymoma located in two thoracic vertebras: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The thymus arises in the ventral portion of the third and fourth pharyngeal pouch. It descends into the anterior mediastinum at 6th week of gestation. Any errors occurring during this process can cause dissemination of aberrant nodules that are responsible for most atypical thymomas. CASE PRESENTATION: The authors report a unusual case of type-A thymoma located in D10 and D11 vertebral bodies. The histology showed a uniform growth of short, spindle shaped, mitotically inactive cells. A few small, normal lymphocytes were seen scattered or in small groups. The immunohistochemical inv

A morphological adaptation of the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae to lumbar hyperlordosis in young and adult females.

The lumbar shape in females is thought to be unique, compensating for lumbar hyperlordosis. Yet, the morphological adaptation of various vertebral parameters in the thoracic and lumbar spine to this unique posture in young and adult females has only been partially addressed in the literature. Our aim was to investigate the gender association to vertebral shape in the thoracic and lumbar spine as a possible adaptation to lumbar hyperlordosis in young and adult females. A three-dimensional digitizer was used to measure the vertebral body sagittal wedging, relative spinous process thickness, and

[Transverse myelopathy caused by aneurysmal bone cyst of the thoracic vertebra in an old person].

A 63-year-old woman developed progressive weakness and sensory disturbance in the legs, and had to walk with a stick three months later. Neurological examination revealed symptoms of transverse myelopathy at the level of the first lumbar cord. The plain X-rays revealed flattening and osteolytic changes of the 11th thoracic vertebra which suggested a spine tumor. CT showed a destruction of the 11th vertebra which invaded the spinal canal. The 11th vertebral body and the arches were filled by lobulated tumor masses. MRI of the spine revealed the 11th vertebra to be low in T1 and high in T2 image

Comparison of thoracic vertebrae and L1 CT attenuation in predicting osteoporosis using opportunistic chest CT.

BACKGROUND: Since dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is currently the most commonly used reference standard, most previous studies using computed tomography (CT) attenuation values to predict osteoporosis have chosen abdominal CT images. A few studies have investigated whether the thoracic vertebrae can be independently used for the identification of osteoporosis compared to the lumbar vertebrae. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the attenuation values of thoracic vertebrae measured using artificial intelligence (AI) on chest CT would independently predict osteoporosis identification, con

Design and radiological confirmation of three-column cortical bone trajectory in the lower thoracic vertebrae.

PURPOSE: This study aims to design novel cortical bone trajectories for the lower thoracic vertebrae that traverse the anterior, middle, and posterior columns. We seek to establish novel theoretical guidelines and placement strategies to optimize the trajectory of CBT screws in osteoporotic patients. METHODS: Five different diameters of CBT screws, ranging from 3.5 mm to 5.5 mm, were designed. The tip of the simulated screw was aimed at the anterior half of the vertebral body, with appropriate cephalad and lateral angles. Screw placement was simulated using Mimics software, and key parameters

[Multidisciplinary Treatment for Metastatic Breast Cancer in Thoracic Vertebrae Improved Patient' S Quality of Life].

A 40's woman complained of back pain and unable to walk. Computed tomography(CT)suggested that the 4th thoracic vertebra was crushed and spinal cord was compressed. Also, CT pointed out the right breast tumor and axillary lymph nodes metastasis. Spinal cord compression was due to the thoracic vertebra metastasis of breast cancer. She was referred to our hospital within 6 hours after the onset of neuroplasia. Then, laminectomy and posterior spinal fusion was performed immediately. After operation, she received 37.5 Gy of radiotherapy. She became ambulatory and her bladder-rectal disorder was im

Lowest Instrumented Vertebra (LIV) Index as a Supplemental Indicator to Lastly Touched Vertebra for Selection of the Fusion Level in Main Thoracic Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis.

Study DesignRetrospective Cohort Study.ObjectivesSelecting the last substantially touched vertebra (LSTV) or the lastly touched vertebra (LTV) as the lowest instrumented vertebra (LIV) has been shown to prevent distal adding-on (DA) in Lenke 1A and 2A curves or Lenke 1B and 1C curves, respectively. However, DA was still observed in our cohort even when fusing at or distal to STV or LTV when undergoing thoracic curve fusion (TCF). The purposes of this study are (1) to identify factors associated with the occurrence of DA when LIV for TCF is at or distal to LTV/LSTV, and (2) to demonstrate the e
