[Mechanism of pregnancy-induced thymus involution and regeneration and medication rules of postpartum prescriptions].

In order to prevent the maternal immune defenses to the semi-allogeneic fetus, the maternal body will present a special adaptive immune system change represented by acute thymic involution(ATI) during pregnancy, which can be quickly regenerated after delivery. The ATI during pregnancy is related to the level of sex hormones, which is mainly caused by progesterone. Pregnancy-induced ATI is manifested as the continuous shrinkage of thymus volume, especially the cortex, and the wrinkle and phagocytosis of the subcapsular cortical thymic epithelial cells(cTECs), while other thymic epithelial cells

Involvement of glucocorticoids in the reorganization of the amphibian immune system at metamorphosis.

In recent years, integrative animal biologists and behavioral scientists have begun to understand the complex interactions between the immune system and the neuroendocrine system. Amphibian metamorphosis offers a unique opportunity to study dramatic hormone-driven changes in the immune system in a compressed time frame. In the South African clawed frog, Xenopus laevis, the larval pattern of immunity is distinct from that of the adult, and metamorphosis marks the transition from one pattern to the other. Climax of metamorphosis is characterized by significant elevations in thyroid hormones, glu

Immunological aspects and gender bias during respiratory viral infections including novel Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19): A scoping review.

The human immune system is not adequately equipped to eliminate new microbes and could result in serious damage on first exposure. This is primarily attributed to the exaggerated immune response (inflammatory disease), which may prove detrimental to the host, as evidenced by SARS-CoV-2 infection. From the experiences of Novel Coronavirus Disease-19 to date, male patients are likely to suffer from high-intensity inflammation and disease severity than the female population. Hormones are considered the significant pillars of sex differences responsible for the discrepancy in immune response exhib

Expression of melatonin receptors and CD4 in the ovine thymus, lymph node, spleen and liver during early pregnancy.

As a pineal gland hormone, melatonin acts through its receptors to modulate the immune system. The immune system is composed of primary and secondary organs, and immune organs are adapted to the presence of the fetal alloantigen during pregnancy. However, it is unclear whether melatonin affects maternal immune organs during early pregnancy in sheep. In this study, the ovine thymus, lymph node, spleen and liver were sampled at day 16 of the oestrous cycle, and at days 13, 16 and 25 of pregnancy. The expression of melatonin receptor 1A (MT1), melatonin receptor 1B (MT2) and cluster of differenti

Sex hormones as immunomodulators in health and disease.

In addition to their effects on sexual differentiation and reproduction, sex hormones influence the immune system. This results in a gender dimorphism in the immune function with females having higher immunoglobulin levels and mounting stronger immune responses following immunization or infection than males. The greater immune responsiveness in females is also evident in their increased susceptibility to autoimmune diseases. However, a clear understanding of the myriad of effects that sex hormones have on the immune system is lacking. Studies in normal mice show that estrogen treatment induces

Alcohol exposure in utero results in diminished T-cell function and alterations in brain corticotropin-releasing factor and ACTH content.

The long-term teratogenic effects of prenatal ethanol exposure during the last week of gestation on immune responsiveness and levels of pituitary ACTH and hypothalamic corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) were examined in Sprague-Dawley rats. Immune responsiveness was measured by T-lymphocyte proliferation in response to mitogenic stimulation with Con A (3 micrograms/ml) in spleen and thymus cells of 21-old-day male rats who were exposed to alcohol in utero. The proliferative response was 8-fold lower in spleen and twofold lower in thymus cells from alcohol-exposed animals compared to response

T and B lymphocytes in pituitary dwarf Snell-Bagg mice.

The lymphocyte composition of the thymus and spleen from weaned (4 month old) hypopituitary dwarf Snell-Bagg mice were compared to those of their phenotypically normal littermates and of hormone (somatotropic hormone plus thyroxine)-treated individuals. Detection of cells bearing receptors for peanut agglutinin, physical analysis and measurement of in vitro reactivities to phytohaemagglutinin and concanavae intra-thymic lymphocyte population of dwarf mice. Examination of spleen-cell suspensions demonstrated a slightly higher frequency of T lymphocytes (Thy 1-2+ alpha-Naphthyl esterase+, high e

Thymic neuroblastoma in adults: report of three cases with special emphasis on its association with the syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone.

We report three cases of neuroblastoma arising within the thymus of elderly patients. All tumors consisted of primitive neuroblasts showing focal gangliocytic differentiation within nests of neuropil. All stained for neuroendocrine markers but were negative for cytokeratins and for the MIC2 gene product. One tumor was associated with the syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone, an endocrinopathy we found in three of five case reports of thymic neuroblastoma in adults. Immunohistochemical stains confirmed production of antidiuretic hormone by this tumor. One patient died of

Post-thymectomy collapse: an unusual case of acute adrenal insufficiency.

A 54-year-old man who had an appearance strongly suggestive of Cushing's syndrome, collapsed after the removal of a carcinoid tumour of the thymus. The clinical suspicion of acute adrenal insufficiency was supported by invasive haemodynamic data and the diagnosis was subsequently confirmed biochemically. These post-operative events were subsequently ignored and a further crisis was probably prevented by tumour recurrence (and hence resumption of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) production). The ectopic production of ACTH from a carcinoid tumour of the thymus is recognised but a report of acu

[Status of the endocrine function of the thymus gland in the normal and complicated course of pregnancy].

A total of 84 women with normal pregnancy and those with threatened abortions were examined, as were 28 healthy nonpregnant women, to estimate the function of the thymus. The findings evidence enhancement of the endocrine function of the thymus in pregnancy, this function being assessed from the thymic serum factor titer. The function activation is related to pregnancy course and is more marked in threatened abortion. Before labor the thymic serum factor titers are the highest and they persist high after spontaneous delivery. The biological sense of thymic hormonal function activation in pregn

Thymic hyperplasia due to excess growth hormone stimulation: A case report.

Growth hormone has a strong role in stimulation of the thymus. We report a case of thymic hyperplasia due to excess endogenous growth hormone in the setting of acromegaly. Acromegaly often presents with systemic manifestations that may be confused with a systemic hematologic malignancy or infection, especially if an anterior mediastinal mass is present but unrecognized as a benign thymic hyperplasia. It is important for radiologists to be aware of this association between growth hormone and thymic stimulation because it may increase confidence diagnosing thymic hyperplasia in this setting, and

Involvement of CXCL12/CXCR4 pair in migration of thymocytes from lactating mice.

During the postpartum and lactation period, the involuted thymus, affected by pregnancy hormones, initiates its morphophysiological recovery with the positive regulation of the hormone prolactin (PRL), present at high levels during lactation. PRL has pleiotropic effects on thymic epithelial cells, thymocytes, as well as on elements of the extracellular matrix. In this study, we evaluated the production of the chemokine CXCL12 by the thymic microenvironment and its receptor, CXCR4, by thymocytes from lactating female mice. To achieve this objective, we used C57BL/6 female mice that were nullipa

Precursors of thymic peptides as stress sensors.

INTRODUCTION: A large volume of data indicates that the known thymic hormones, thymulin, thymopoietin, thymosin-α, thymosin-β, and thymic humoral factor-y2, exhibit different spectra of activities. Although large in volume, available data are rather fragmented, resulting in a lack of understanding of the role played by thymic hormones in immune homeostasis. AREA COVERED: Existing data compartmentalizes the effect of thymic peptides into 2 categories: influence on immune cells and interconnection with neuroendocrine systems. The current study draws attention to a third aspect of the thymic pep

Sex hormones as negative regulators of lymphopoiesis.

B lymphocytes, together with cells of seven other lineages, are made in large numbers from precursors in the bone marrow. Using cell culture models and recombinant proteins, progress has been rapid in identifying cytokines which could potentially regulate the proliferation, differentiation and migration of B-cell precursors. However, we still know little about molecular mechanisms which are important for maintaining steady-state conditions in vivo. B lymphopoiesis is severely diminished during pregnancy in normal mice and this provided a clue that sex hormones might be important negative regul

RANK links thymic regulatory T cells to fetal loss and gestational diabetes in pregnancy.

Successful pregnancies rely on adaptations within the mother1, including marked changes within the immune system2. It has long been known that the thymus, the central lymphoid organ, changes markedly during pregnancy3. However, the molecular basis and importance of this process remain largely obscure. Here we show that the osteoclast differentiation receptor RANK4,5 couples female sex hormones to the rewiring of the thymus during pregnancy. Genetic deletion of Rank (also known as Tnfrsf11a) in thymic epithelial cells results in impaired thymic involution and blunted expansion of natural regula

Glucocorticoids in T cell development, differentiation and function.

Glucocorticoids (GCs) are small lipid hormones produced by the adrenals that maintain organismal homeostasis. Circadian and stress-induced changes in systemic GC levels regulate metabolism, cardiovascular and neural function, reproduction and immune activity. Our understanding of GC effects on immunity comes largely from administration of exogenous GCs to treat immune or inflammatory disorders. However, it is increasingly clear that endogenous GCs both promote and suppress T cell immunity. Examples include selecting an appropriate repertoire of T cell receptor (TCR) self-affinities in the thym

Pineal modulation of thymus and immune function in a seasonally breeding tropical rodent, Funambulus pennanti.

The immune system driven by cytokines is now known to be influenced by various other endocrine glands and its hormones. Results of the present study indicate a bidirectional relation between the pineal-thymus axis and the immune system status of an Indian tropical rodent, Funambulus pennanti, during winter months (reproductive inactive phase), when it faces maximum challenges from nature. Pinealectomy during the reproductive inactive phase inhibited thymus and spleen functions, which resulted in significant changes in leukocyte and lymphocyte counts and T-cell-mediated immune function (measure

Thymus and autoimmunity.

The thymus prevents autoimmune diseases through mechanisms that operate in the cortex and medulla, comprising positive and negative selection and the generation of regulatory T-cells (Tregs). Egress from the thymus through the perivascular space (PVS) to the blood is another possible checkpoint, as shown by some autoimmune/immunodeficiency syndromes. In polygenic autoimmune diseases, subtle thymic dysfunctions may compound genetic, hormonal and environmental cues. Here, we cover (a) tolerance-inducing cell types, whether thymic epithelial or tuft cells, or dendritic, B- or thymic myoid cells;

Luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) receptors in the neuroendocrine-immune network. Biochemical bases and implications for reproductive physiopathology.

It seems apparent that the brain-pituitary-reproductive axis and the brain-thymus-lymphoid axis are linked by an array of internal mechanisms of communication that use similar signals (neurotransmitters, peptides, growth factors, hormones) acting on similar recognition targets. Moreover, such communication networks form the basis and control of each step and every level of reproductive physiology. This work has focused on the LHRH system, a primary central and peripheral clock of both neuroendocrine and immune functions. From the initiation of a sexually organized response, the detection of se

Thymic neuroendocrine carcinoma producing ectopic adrenocorticotropic hormone and Cushing's syndrome.

Neuroendocrine carcinoma of the thymus, previously termed thymic carcinoid, is a rare clinical entity. Rarer still are such cases presenting with endocrinopathies. We report a case of thymic neuroendocrine carcinoma presenting with ectopic adrenocorticotroic hormone production and resultant Cushing's syndrome.
