The association between primary hyperparathyroidism and nonmedullary thyroid malignancies is well known. There is also, however, some evidence for an association between secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) and thyroid cancer. We report three patients in whom invasive papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) was diagnosed before (one case) or at the time of (two cases) parathyroidectomy for SHPT. Three women (ages 23, 54, and 64 years) presented with bone pain and pruritus typical of SHPT. All three patients had biopsy-proven parathyroid bone disease and elevated parathormone levels (664, 1674, and 2

BACKGROUND: Thyroid cancer is the most common endocrine malignancy in children and adults. The rising incidence of thyroid cancer, which remains poorly understood, raises the need to evaluate whether this increase will lead to higher mortality and more aggressive disease. This study aimed to describe the characteristics of thyroid cancer at the largest hospital in West Java and to examine the relationships between these characteristics.
METHODS: This was an observational study. The subjects were patients with thyroid tumors in the oncology surgery division of a tertiary hospital in West Java,

The thyroid is a vital endocrine organ that regulates metabolism, heart rate, respiration, digestion, body temperature, brain development, skin and bone maintenance, and reproduction and fertility. Thyroid cancer (TC) is the most common endocrine malignancy, with an estimate of 44,020 new cases in 2025. Incidence has been increasing, most notably at 4-5% per year in young adults. Papillary thyroid cancer (PTC), the most common TC subtype, accounts for approximately 80% of newly diagnosed TC cases. Furthermore, 2290 deaths are expected from the disease in 2025, with survival at over 98% with tr

OBJECTIVE: It is uncommon for dermatomyositis to be associated with papillary thyroid cancer. We report an unusual case of papillary thyroid cancer presenting with dermatomyositis.
METHODS: The case history, imaging and laboratory data is reviewed.
RESULTS: We report the case of a 62-year-old female with a prior history of dermatomyositis and breast cancer who presented with a recurrent episode of dermatomyositis. Extensive evaluation of the cause of the dermatomyositis recurrence revealed no recurrence of the breast cancer but a thyroid nodule was identified. The nodule was biopsied and the

Tumours that produce metastases in the paranasal sinuses or sphenoidal sinus are rare; the carcinomas of kidney and lung being the most frequent with this type of metastasis. Distant metastases from differentiated thyroid carcinoma are rare and, moreover, when they metastasize, they do so into lung and bone. We report a patient who had a papillary thyroid carcinoma with metastases into the sphenoidal sinus.

In a population-based case-control study in the Uppsala-Orebro Health Care Region of Sweden, the histories of cancer among parents of 517 histologically confirmed cases of papillary and follicular carcinoma and of a similar number of sex- and age-matched controls were compared. The parental history of cancer was compiled through information from death certificates and from the nationwide Cancer Register. The incidence of malignancies in a cohort of parents of cases of thyroid cancer was also compared with the incidence in the whole Swedish population. A maternal history of cancer was more comm

Cancer stem cell (CSC) markers have prognostic significance in various cancers, but their clinical significance in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) has not been demonstrated. In this study, CSC markers expressed in PTC and their relationships with prognosis were evaluated. We constructed tissue microarrays for 386 PTC cases, divided it into 42 low risk cases and 344 intermediate risk cases according to the American Thyroid Association 2009 Risk Stratification System. Immunohistochemical staining of CSC markers (CD15, CD24, CD44, CD166, and ALDH1A1) was performed, and the proportion of stained

BACKGROUND: Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT) combined with papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) is more common in clinical practice, maybe posing a serious threat to the health of patients. It is uncertain whether HT is a risk factor or protective factor for PTC. The aim of the study was to retrospectively explore the effect of HT on the biological behavior of PTC.
METHODS: A total of 200 patients were included in the study. Among them, 100 patients with PTC without HT were in the control group (PTC group), and 100 cases diagnosed as PTC with HT were in the experimental group (HT + PTC group). The follow

BACKGROUND: Chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis is an autoimmune thyroid disorder and the most common cause of hypothyroidism in women. Many studies suggest that chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis contributes to a diagnostic challenge in thyroid nodules and may increase the risk of developing papillary thyroid cancer. This study examines preoperative clinical factors and tumor characteristics associated with papillary thyroid cancer among patients with chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis.
METHODS: A retrospective review of prospectively collected data of patients who underwent total thyroidectomy betwee

BACKGROUND: Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT) is an autoimmune disorder of thyroid gland and is the most common cause of hypothyroidism. Its association with thyroid lymphoma is well established but with papillary thyroid cancer (PTC), the studies have shown inconsistent results.
METHODS: It is a retrospective review of papillary thyroid cancer patients and 213 participants were included for final analysis. They were divided in two groups, based on presence or absence of Hashimoto thyroiditis. We noted their demographic details, histopathological diagnosis, presence of thyroid autoantibodies, TNM st

This report documents 3 pediatric papillary thyroid carcinoma cases with associated Hashimoto thyroiditis. In all 3 cases, hypoechoic nodules accompanied by multiple echogenic spots were noted on sonography of the thyroid. Hashimoto thyroiditis was suspected on the basis of positive thyroid autoantibody test results and pathologic examinations of thyroidectomy specimens, which revealed chronic thyroiditis with lymphocytic infiltration as the background of papillary thyroid carcinoma development. The potential for papillary carcinoma development warrants close follow-up, and meticulous sonograp

BACKGROUND: Serum calcitonin (sCt) is measured in many patients with nodular thyroid disease, and the possibility of a false-positive result is a matter of concern, particularly in the case of mild hypercalcitoninemia. Among the conditions reported to cause sCt elevation, Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) and papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) are relevant. In view of the high frequency of these conditions in patients with nodular disease and the controversy regarding the extent to which they contribute to hypercalcitoninemia, the objective of this study was to determine the influence of the presenc

In the familial form of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC), two or more members of the same family have to be affected with PTC. Prevalence is around 5% of all PTC. We performed a clinical analysis in 79 relatives of 16 patients of 7 unrelated kindred with the diagnosis of familial papillary thyroid carcinoma (FPTC). The results were compared with a control group. Thyroid palpation and TSH and TPO-Ab assessment was carried out in the relatives without a diagnosed PTC. Additionally, molecular analysis was performed in the sixteen affected patients. Clinical screening of the 79 family members showed
