[Thyroid disease in autoimmune liver diseases].

It has been reported that autoimmune liver diseases, autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cirrhosis and primary sclerosing cholangitis, complicate thyroid disorder. According to the Nationwide survey in Japan, hypothyroidism most of which are due to chronic thyroiditis was seen in both autoimmune hepatitis and primary biliary cirrhosis, at 12% and 5.8%, respectively. It is sometimes happen that the manifestation of thyroid disorder proceeds the symptoms of liver disease. Because middle-aged women preferably tend to suffer from both autoimmune liver disease and autoimmune thyroid disease, it i

[Lipoprotein (a) studies in thyroid diseases].

High lipoprotein (a) levels have been established as a risk factor for atherosclerosis. The physiological and pathological function of lipoprotein (a) and the effect of other factors of lipoprotein (a) plasma concentrations are not well known. The role of thyroid hormones concerning Lp(a) plasma concentrations are not fully cleared. The Lp(a) levels are genetically determined, relatively stable, while the thyroid hormones react differently. 30 hyperthyroid and 29 hypothyroid patients were studied. The thyroid status and lipid parameters were investigated. A significant correlation was observed

[Chronic urticaria and autoimmune thyroid diseases].

INTRODUCTION: Chronic urticaria results from multiple interactive causes. For certain authors dythyroidism is significantly more frequent in patients with chronic urticaria, often associated with other autoimmune disorders. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study included 45 patients with chronic urticaria (29 men and 16 women, mean age 45.6 years). All underwent clinical examination for thyroid disease with assay of free T3 and T4, ultrasensitive TSH and antimicrosome and antithyroperoxidase antithyroid antibodies. RESULTS: Among the 45 patients, 8, all women, had an autoimmune thyroid disease: Gr

[Clinical nuclear medicine in thyroid diseases].

Both in vivo and in vitro isotopic tests are available for the diagnosis of thyroid diseases. As in vitro tests, serum concentrations of T4, T3, free T4, free T3, TSH, TBG, and thyroglobulin (Tg) are determined by RIA or by IRMA. TSH receptor antibodies are measured by RRA for TSH. In order to differentiate blocking from stimulating antibodies, however, assessment of biological activity of the antibody by another type of method such as TSAb assay is required. Radioassays for anti-Tg and anti-TPO antibodies have recently been developed. The former assay is sensitive enough to make early diagnos

[Graefe's balance test in thyroid diseases].

Graefe's test for muscle balance was performed in 100 patients with nodular toxic goitre and Graves-Basedow, and in a control group of 100 healty people. The test was positive in 51% of the thyroid cases for short distance vision. In this group 90% of disorders involved latent divergence, 10% latent convergence. In the control group the test was positive only in 3% of cases. Comparison of the Graefe's balance test with other methods of examination revealed that it is very sensitive; in Maddox test disturbances were found in 24% of patients, Moebius sign was observed in 8%, Dalrymple sign in 4%

Antithyroid peroxidase autoantibodies in thyroid diseases.

Thyroid microsomal antibodies (anti-M Ab) have been recently proven to be directed to thyroid peroxidase (TPO). Methods to detect anti-TPO antibodies (anti-TPO Ab) employing purified antigen have been developed, but the available information on the clinical usefulness of this technique is still limited to small patient series. In the present investigation anti-TPO Ab were assayed by a newly developed monoclonal antibody-assisted RIA in a large number (n = 715) of subjects, including 119 normal controls and 596 patients with different autoimmune or nonautoimmune thyroid disease: Anti-TPO Ab wer

Infectious diseases of the thyroid gland.

Clinical and laboratory characteristics of 224 patients with thyroidal infection reported since 1900 are reviewed. Much of the prior literature on this subject has assumed that most instances of thyroiditis are infectious and that all lymphomatous thyroiditis is tuberculous. Similarly, thyroiditis occurring with syphilis was often equated with treponemal invasion of the gland. Acute bacterial thyroiditis is rapid in onset and more likely than tuberculous infection to produce fever, pain, and tenderness. Suppurative and mycobacterial infections are most common among women with preexisting thyro

[The pararheumatic syndrome in thyroid diseases].

25 patients with hypothyroidism and 100 patients with hyperthyroidism were anamnestically, clinically, serologically and radiologically examined for the presence of a para- or pseudorheumatic symptomatology. The evaluation was carried out in comparison to the control groups of the same sex and age distribution. In nearly half the cases in hypothyroidism a symptomatology with polyarthralgias, myalgias, weakness of the muscles, acroparaesthesias, rigidity, swelling of the fingers and thickenings of the synovial membrane which are to be classified as "myxoedematous pseudorheumatism" stood in the

SARS-CoV-2 and thyroid diseases.

SARS-CoV-2 virus responsible for acute respiratory disease affected other organs leading to co-existence symptoms or complications. Thyroid gland was one of them due to expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), the protein facilitating viral binding to the host cells. Moreover, thyroid gland, important for regulation of hormonal network, is extremely sensitive to any changes in homeostasis and metabolism. It was shown, that COVID-19 was associated with induction of thyroid disease or increasing existing functional disturbances or autoimmune process. Thyroid diseases are mainly base

Association between SSNHL and Thyroid Diseases.

The association between thyroid disease and sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) has not been evaluated. We investigated the association of goiter, hypothyroidism, thyroiditis, and hyperthyroidism with sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL). Data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service-Health Screening Cohort were used. The 8658 SSNHL patients were matched in a 1:4 ratio with 34,632 controls for age, sex, and region of residence. Histories of goiter, hypothyroidism, thyroiditis, hyperthyroidism, and Levothyroxine medication were explored as possible factors influencing SSNHL

[Autoimmune diseases of the thyroid gland].

Autoimmune diseases of the thyroid gland are considered to be the most frequent cause of thyroid gland disorders. Autoimmune thyroid diseases consist of two subgroups: autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) and Graves' disease. The AIT is the most common human autoimmune disease. Infiltration of the thyroid gland with cytotoxic T‑cells can lead to an initial thyrotoxicosis und during the course to hypothyroidism due to destruction of the thyroid gland. Substitution with Levothyroxine is indicated for manifest hypothyroidism and subclinical hypothyroidism with increased thyroid antibodies with the intent

Novel Therapies for Thyroid Autoimmune Diseases.

C-X-C chemokine receptor (CXCR)3 and its interferon(IFN)γ-dependent chemokines (CXCL10, CXCL9, CXCL11) are implicated in the immune-pathogenesis of autoimmune thyroiditis (AT), Graves disease (GD) and Graves Ophthalmopathy (GO). In tissue, recruited Th1 lymphocytes produce IFNγ, enhancing the tissue secretion of IFNγ-inducible chemokines, initiating and perpetuating the autoimmune process. Patients with AT (with hypothyroidism), and with GO and GD, particularly in the active phase, have high IFNγ-inducible chemokines. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)γ or -α agonists and methim

[Inflammatory diseases of the thyroid gland].

This review article deals with the classification, clinical features and morphology of thyroiditis. These inflammatory diseases account for approximately 20 % of all thyroid diseases. The vast majority of cases of thyroiditis are of immunogenic origin while non-immunogenic thyroiditis (caused by pathogens or iatrogenic) is a rarity.

Circulating microRNAs in autoimmune thyroid diseases.

CONTEXT: Autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITDs), including Graves' disease (GD) and Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), are the most common autoimmune diseases. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small noncoding RNAs, which can play pivotal roles in immune functions and development of autoimmunity. Recently, it has been recognized that identification of circulating miRNAs can provide important and novel information regarding disease pathogenesis and clinical condition. However, the role circulating miRNAs in AITD has not yet been described. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to characterize the different circul
