Thyroid nodules are common in the general population, with higher prevalence in women and with advancing age. Approximately 5% of thyroid nodules are malignant; the majority of this subset represents papillary thyroid cancer. Ultrasonography is the standard technique to assess the underlying thyroid parenchyma, characterize the features of thyroid nodules, and evaluate for abnormal cervical lymphadenopathy. Various risk stratification systems exist to categorize the risk of malignancy based on the ultrasound appearance of a thyroid nodule. Nodules are selected for fine-needle aspiration biopsy

Thyroid nodules are common. Their importance lies in the need to assess thyroid function, degree of and future risk of mass effect, and exclude thyroid cancer, which occurs in 7-15% of thyroid nodules. There are four key components to thyroid nodule assessment: clinical history and examination, serum thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) measurement, ultrasound and, if indicated, fine-needle aspiration (FNA). If the serum TSH is suppressed, a thyroid scan with 99Tc can distinguish between a solitary hot nodule, a toxic multinodular goitre or, less commonly, thyroiditis or Graves' disease within a

UNLABELLED: In 2006, a 58-year-old woman presented with thyrotoxicosis. She had undergone left hemithyroidectomy 14 years before for a benign follicular adenoma. Ultrasound imaging demonstrated bilateral cervical lymphadenopathy with enhanced tracer uptake in the left lateral neck on a Technetium-99m uptake scan. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy of a left lateral neck node was insufficient for a cytological diagnosis; however, thyroglobulin (Tg) washings were strongly positive. The clinical suspicion was of functionally active metastatic thyroid cancer in cervical lymph nodes. A completion thyroi

Based on strong research evidence, thyroid nodules in children and teenagers are more likely to be malignant than in adults. Based on strong research evidence, a history of ionizing radiation to the head or neck is an independent risk factor for the development of thyroid malignancies. There is strong research evidence, including a recent meta-analysis, supporting the use of fine-needle aspiration biopsy in the evaluation of all pediatric and adolescent patients presenting with a thyroid nodule. The surgical management and postoperative care of pediatric and adolescent patients who have well-d

The incidence of thyroid nodules in children is estimated to be 1 to 1.5% based on clinical examination. Children with thyroid nodules, compared to adults with thyroid nodules, have a fourfold greater risk of developing malignant thyroid disease. Differentiated thyroid carcinoma is the most common pediatric endocrine tumor, constituting 0.5-3% of all childhood malignancies. The thyroid is one of the most frequent sites of secondary neoplasm in children who receive radiation therapy for other malignancies. Thyroid carcinoma has been studied extensively in adults. However, the pediatric literatu

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Percutaneous ethanol injection (PEI) has been established as an effective and safe treatment for thyroid cystic nodules (TCN). Certain tetracyclines have also been used successfully as sclerosing agents, and it has been proposed that a low pH might account for their efficacy in this indication. This study compared the effectiveness of ethanol and dilute hydrochloric acid (pH 1.0) in the sclerotherapy of TCN.
METHODS: A total of 27 patients with TCN with a mean cystic volume of 16.6 mL (5-45 mL) were randomly assigned to receive 1 of the following 3 treatments: 1) needl

The paper presents current diagnostic and therapeutic approach of thyroid nodules. TSH and iodine are the main goitrogenic agents, but there are also other auto- para-endocrinal factors that play very important roles in goiter growth as well as in the intrinsic growth potential of some thyroid follicular cells. The diagnosis of thyroid nodule demands further investigation such as thyroid function evaluation and distinction between benign from malignant nodules using FNAB. The confirmation or suspicion of malignancy or presence of compressive symptoms is indication for surgery. In benign lesion

This is a restrospective study of 176 thyroid nodules operated between 1977 and 1990, excluding bilateral goiters. 145 were benign with 111 cold and 34 hot nodules; 31 were cancers. Fine needle biopsy (FNB) is useless in hot nodules. For the cold ones, even in recent series, FNB can give false positive or negative results. This means that the answer of FNB should be closely related to the clinical and US findings. The surgical treatment of thyroid nodules must be a total lobectomy including the isthmus. The recurrent laryngeal nerve must be followed entirely. There was no permanent nerve palsy

We studied two cases of hyperfunctioning thyroid nodules in children. A 9-year-old girl and an 11-year-old girl had thyroid masses in otherwise nonpalpable thyroid glands. Scintiscan showed hyperfunctioning thyroid nodules. The former patient had elevated values for T4 and T3, and plasma thyrotropin (TSH) level failed to respond to stimulation with thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH), whereas the latter patient had normal values for T4, and T3 and plasma TSH response to TRH was normal. After the surgical removal of nodules, scintiscan exhibited radioactivity in the contralateral lobe of the th

The aim of this study was to evaluate the differences in ultrasonic features of patients with medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), and benign thyroid nodules. This study included 53 cases of MTC, 151 cases of PTC, and 200 cases of benign thyroid nodule which were pathologically confirmed. There were no significant differences in sex and thyroid gland involvement among the MTC, PTC, and benign thyroid nodule groups. The age among the 3 groups was statistically different (P = 0.002). The TNM stage of MTC was significantly higher than that of PTC (P < 0.001). Comp

The objective of this study is to evaluate thyroid cancer risk clinician-patient communication among patients receiving usual counseling and counseling enhanced by a conversation aid. A secondary analysis of clinical visit recordings and post-visit surveys obtained during a trial assessing the impact of a conversation aid for patients with thyroid nodules was conducted. We assessed how thyroid cancer risk was communicated, different risk communication strategies between groups, and predictors of accurate cancer risk perception. Fifty-nine patients were analyzed. Most were women (90%) and middl

Thyroid dysfunction is a common endocrine disorder in the general population, with a reported prevalence of 10-15%. However, this rate is even higher in older adults, with an estimated prevalence of ≈25% in some populations. Since elderly patients usually present more comorbidities than younger individuals, thyroid dysfunction may carry a synergistic negative health impact, mainly due to increased cardiovascular disease risk. Moreover, thyroid dysfunction in the elderly can be more difficult to diagnose due to its subtle or even asymptomatic clinical presentation, and the interpretation of thy

Typical presentation of subacute thyroiditis (SAT) is an anterior neck pain radiating up to the jaw and ear, often associated with asthenia and fever. Biology shows hyperthyroidism and inflammation. The thyroid uptake is low at scintigraphy. However, the clinical presentation of SAT may be misleading. We report two cases of SAT whose initial manifestation was a painful thyroid nodule suspected of malignancy. In both cases, ultrasound feature was a heterogeneous, hypoechoic, ill-defined area with a low vascularization on colour Doppler. These areas were interpreted by radiologist as nodules. Su

Elastography is a method which assesses the risk of the malignancy and provides information about the degree of hardness in tissue. Hashimoto's thyroiditis, autoimmune lymphocytic infiltration and fibrosis, is considered to be a very common disease that is able to change the hardness of the tissue. The diagnostic value of elastography of this group of patients has not previously been reported. In our study, we aimed to determine the diagnostic value of elastography in 283 patients (255 female, 28 male) with Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Elastography score and index were measured with real-time ultr

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: High-resolution ultrasonography has become mandatory while evaluating patients with thyroid nodules. Although B-mode and Doppler ultrasonography are highly sensitive for diagnosis of thyroid lesions, they lack specificity in differentiating benign from malignant nodules. Ultrasound elastography has proven valuable in discriminating these lesions. This review discusses recent findings regarding the use of elastography as a tool in the evaluation of thyroid masses as well as the different methods and scoring systems used to determine tissue elasticity.
RECENT FINDINGS: There

Fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) of the thyroid, although not perfect, is considered currently the best preoperative method in establishing malignancy in a thyroid nodule. We report the case of an 8-year-old girl with a thyroid mass in the right thyroid lobe. Endocrine investigations revealed subclinical hypothyroidism and high titer of anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies. Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy (FNAB) of the right side of the thyroid gland, where on thyroid ultrasonography (US) a poorly defined iso-/hypoechoic nodule with irregular margins was detected, revealed a background of lymp

A thyroid nodule (TN) is an abnormal growth within the thyroid gland, with a large prevalence in adults. They can be classified as benign or malignant based on their characteristics. Most nodules are non-palpable and require ultrasound and histopathological analysis for identification. This study reports a rare case of TN involution despite initially exhibiting malignant ultrasound characteristics. The patient presented with a cystic TN of 27.43 x 13.31 x 35.84 mm, initially classified as Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System (TIRADS)-2 and Bethesda II, which later transformed into a solid

BACKGROUND: As the prevalence of Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) and thyroid cancer (TC) has been increasing dramatically in recent years, the association between the two diseases has been widely debated and studied. However, no consistent findings are available and the relationship remains controversial. In this study, we analyzed the influence of HT on the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid nodules and investigated the relationship between HT and TC.
METHODS: From Jan 2017 to Apr 2021, 4678 patients underwent thyroid surgery were collected. Of these patients, 440 were diagnosed with HT (242 no

Background: It is uncertain whether the presence of autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) increases the risk of thyroid cancer in children with thyroid nodules. This study evaluated the association between AIT and thyroid cancer in pediatric patients with thyroid nodules. Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed of pediatric patients (<19 years old) with a thyroid nodule (≥1 cm) who underwent fine-needle aspiration in an academic pediatric thyroid center. AIT was defined by the presence of thyroid autoantibodies or diffusely heterogeneous sonographic echotexture. The primary outcome was diagnosis

SUMMARY: We report a case of subacute thyroiditis in a 40-year-old female who initially presented with painful thyroid nodules without clinical and biochemical evidence of hyperthyroidism. Thyroid ultrasound was done to evaluate the thyroid nodules and fine-needle aspiration (FNA) was performed in view of the suspicious features. As the FNA showed a follicular lesion of undetermined significance or atypia of undetermined significance (FLUS/AUS, Bethesda III), she was advised for surgical excision. She was subsequently diagnosed with subacute thyroiditis based on her clinical symptoms, biochemi
