Virulence Diversity and Population Structure of Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici in Tibet, China.

Stripe rust, caused by Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici (Pst), is a major constraint to wheat production in China. Although the disease occurs in Tibet every year under the favorable weather conditions, the virulence diversity and population structure of the Pst population in this region remain poorly understood. In this study, 312 Pst isolates collected in 2025 from five major wheat-growing regions of Tibet (Qamdo, Nyingchi, Lhasa, Shannan, and Shigatse) were characterized using virulence phenotyping and the Pst 5K genotyping-by-target-sequencing (GBTS) platform. Virulence testing on 19 Ch

Elevation-structured viral ecological strategies along glacier-fed rivers on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, a climate-vulnerable source of Asia's major rivers, harbors underexplored viral communities critical to ecosystem functions. By integrating 597 metagenomes from the Yangtze, Yellow, Lancang, and Yarlung Tsangpo rivers with 85 public available glacial metagenomes (Tibetan Glacier Genome and Gene catalog), we built the Glacier-to-River Virome Catalogue, encompassing 36,358 vOTUs and 897,250 viral protein clusters, to decode viral adaptation and ecological influence across elevation gradients. Our results reveal that high-altitude conditions favor viruses with elevated

RNA virome of ticks and fleas infesting Marmota himalayana from the Qinghai-Tibet plateau.

BACKGROUND: Ticks and fleas are important vectors and hosts for various emergent human pathogens, such as severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus, and tick-borne encephalitis virus. In the Qinghai-Tibet plateau of China, Marmota himalayana (marmots) serves as the primary reservoir for Yersinia pestis, primarily transmitted by fleas. Due to their wide distribution and large population, marmots serve as important host animals for ticks and fleas to survive and reproduce on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. However, the spectrum of RNA viruses found in ti

Echinococcus shiquicus in Qinghai-Tibet plateau: population structure and confirmation of additional endemic areas.

Echinococcus shiquicus is currently limited to the Qinghai–Tibet plateau, a large mountainous region in China. Although the zoonotic potential remains unknown, progress is being made on the distribution and intermediate host range. In this study, we report E. shiquicus within Gansu and Qinghai provinces in regions located not only around the central areas but also the southeast edge of the plateau and describe their genetic relationship with previous isolates from the plateau. From 1879 plateau pikas examined, 2.39% (95% CI 1.79–3.18) were infected with E. shiquicus. The highest prevalence of

First report of Echinococcus shiquicus in dogs from eastern Qinghai-Tibet plateau region, China.

Echinococcus shiquicus was discovered in foxes and pika wildlife hosts in Sichuan Province, China in 2005. Faecal samples from dogs collected in a previous echinococcosis purgation survey from Shiqu County, Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture (Sichuan) were screened by coproPCR to investigate the possible occurrence of E. shiquicus. In addition, coproDNA extracted from 8 necropsied Tibetan foxes (Vulpes ferrilata), the natural host of E. shiquicus, were also included. Thirty (6/20) percent of faecal samples from dogs were positive for E. shiquicus DNA after PCR amplification of a fragment with

Urbanization exacerbates riverine greenhouse gas (CO2, CH4, N2O) emissions on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

As the "Asian Water Tower" and a global climate-sensitive zone, the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) river greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions affect regional climate feedbacks and the global carbon cycle, while urbanization's impact on these emissions remains unclear. The Huangshui River Basin, the eastern QTP's largest population-carrying unit and most urbanized area, provides this study with crucial geographical significance. Based on seasonal in-situ observations and land-use analysis in the basin, we revealed the characteristics and mechanisms of GHG emissions from urban rivers on the QTP. Urban ri

Human Methylmercury Exposure and Potential Impacts in Central Tibet: Food and Traditional Tibetan Medicine.

Methylmercury presents potent neurotoxicity to humans. Fish consumption is the leading source of human exposure to methylmercury worldwide. However, the exposure source in Tibet remains poorly understood because of the scarcity of observational data on most Tibetan foods, although high mercury levels were recently detected in some traditional Tibetan medicines. Here, the results of field investigations show that the joint consumption of traditional Tibetan medicines (TTMs), fish, and rice constitutes a primary exposure pathway to methylmercury in Tibetans and that the probable daily intake of

First identification of a Brucella abortus biovar 4 strain from yak in Tibet, China.

Brucellosis is one of the major zoonotic diseases in the world. In China, understanding on its causative agent Brucella is still limited. Recently, we isolated a Brucella strain XZ19-1 from yak in Lhasa, Tibet. Phenotypical characterization proved that it belongs to B. abortus biovar 4, a biotype that has never been reported in China. MLVA-16 genotyping revealed a novel profile (4-5-3-12-2-2-3-3-8-32-8-5-4-3-3-3) in this strain, while MLST sequence typing demonstrated that it belongs to ST 71. Furthermore, the whole genome of XZ19-1 strain was sequenced. Subsequent phylogenetic analysis demons

Optimization Strategy for Generating Gene-edited Tibet Minipigs by Synchronized Oestrus and Cytoplasmic Microinjection.

The Tibet minipig is a rare highland pig breed worldwide and has many applications in biomedical and agricultural research. However, Tibet minipigs are not like domesticated pigs in that their ovulation number is low, which is unfavourable for the collection of zygotes. Partly for this reason, few studies have reported the successful generation of genetically modified Tibet minipigs by zygote injection. To address this issue, we described an efficient way to generate gene-edited Tibet minipigs, the major elements of which include the utilization of synchronized oestrus instead of superovulatio

Factors influencing the spatial distribution and individual variation in urinary fluoride levels in Tibet, China.

Nowadays, fluorosis is the most prevalent endemic disease in Tibet and one of the most concerned public health problems in China; urinary fluoride is a common diagnostic indicator of endemic fluorosis. However, the spatial distribution and influencing factors of urinary fluoride content in Tibet remain unclear. This study aims to bridge this gap by geographically weighted regression (GWR), analyses of variance (ANOVAs), Geodetector, and stepwise multiple linear regression (MLR). To achieve this goal, this study first investigated fluoride levels in the fasting urine among 637 Tibetan residents
