This article reports a case of medial dislocation of the talus as a rare injury caused by a fall from a low height.Treatment recommendations given in the literature for this rare injury are heterogeneous but closed reduction is predominant. Little is known about possible obstacles in closed reduction. The known complications include posttraumatic arthritis and necrosis of the talus.A posttraumatic lesion of the tibial nerve has not been reported, which is why a treatment recommendation is illustrated and discussed based on this case report.

BACKGROUND: Both vascular and compression etiologies have been proposed as the source of neurologic symptoms in tarsal tunnel syndrome. Advancing the understanding of the arterial anatomy supplying the posterior tibial nerve (PTN) and its branches may provide insight into the cause of tarsal tunnel symptoms. The purpose of this study was to describe the arterial anatomy of the PTN and its branches.
METHODS: Sixty adult cadaveric lower extremities (thirty previously frozen and thirty fresh specimens) were amputated distal to the knee. The vascular supply to the PTN and its branches was identif

Schwannomas are the most common tumours of the sheath of peripheral nerves. The clinical diagnosis is usually straightforward, but may be delayed for many years in a schwannoma of the posterior tibial nerve. The symptoms are often attributed to entrapment neuropathy or to lumbosacral radiculopathy. We describe 25 patients with a schwannoma of the posterior tibial nerve. Only three were diagnosed within a year of presentation. The mean time to diagnosis was 86.5 months with a median of 48 months (2 to 360). All the patients complained of pain, which was felt specifically in the sole of the foot

Background. Injuries of the tibial nerve are a rather rare neuropathy of the peripheral nervous system. The tibial nerve may be injured at any point from the distal thigh to the foot. The most common causes of lesions include bone fractures, knee and ankle dislocations, wounds, compartment syndrome, and iatrogenic injuries. Material and methods. We studied 39 patients with tibial nerve injuries, analyzing the causes of lesion and the mechanism of injury. The outcome of surgical treatment was evaluated in 25 cases. We evaluated the muscle strength based on the BMRC scale (M0- M5) and sensory re

Patients with tarsal tunnel syndrome of unknown etiology do poorly after surgical decompression. Although surgical decompression addresses the soft tissue constraints, it ignores the role of osseous support. Some authors have suggested that a pes planus deformity (i.e., valgus hindfoot and abducted forefoot) is an unrecognized cause of tarsal tunnel syndrome due to increased tibial nerve tension. An in vitro study was performed on nine cadaveric feet to determine the effects of foot position and load on tibial nerve tension. Tensile forces placed through the tibial nerve were measured when the

We report the case of a 59-year-old man with severe knee pain and inability to flex his toes or invert his plantar flexed foot after an external rotation injury to his knee. MRI showed rupture of the popliteus with a haematoma compressing the neurovascular bundle in the proximal calf, and electromyography demonstrated signs of an axonotmesis of the posterior tibial nerve. There was progressive nerve recovery over 24 weeks. Isolated rupture of the popliteus should be considered in any patient with an acute haemarthrosis, lateral tenderness and a stable knee, especially after an external rotatio

BACKGROUND: Chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS) is a heterogenous condition that impacts the Quality of life severely, and it has multimodal complex treatment options. We aimed to compare the efficacy of two well-described neuromodulation therapies, transcutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (TTNS) versus percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS) in the treatment of category IIIB CP/CPPS.
METHODS: This study was designed as a randomized prospective clinical trial. We randomized category IIIB CP/CPPS patients into two treatment groups as TTNS and PTNS groups. Category II

Damage to peripheral nerve tissue may cause loss of function in both the nerve and the targeted muscles it innervates. This study compared the repair capability of engineered nerve conduit (ENC), engineered fibroblast conduit (EFC), and autograft in a 10-mm tibial nerve gap. ENCs were fabricated utilizing primary fibroblasts and the nerve cells of rats on embryonic day 15 (E15). EFCs were fabricated utilizing primary fibroblasts only. Following a 12-week recovery, nerve repair was assessed by measuring contractile properties in the medial gastrocnemius muscle, distal motor nerve conduction vel

A 63-year-old woman developed tibial nerve injury caused by an overlong K wire and 4.5-mm cortical lag screw through the first distal hole below the osteotomy during medial opening-wedge high tibial osteotomy (HTO), leading to a lack of sensation on the sole of the foot with no disturbances in motor functions. The temporary lag screw in the first distal hole below the osteotomy is often inserted by an excessive length in order to compress the potentially fractured opposite cortex. By doing so, posterior neurovascular structures including the tibial nerve and the popliteal vessels can be injure

PURPOSE: The lateral plantar nerve (LPN) branch of the tibial nerve provides the primary supply to the first dorsal interosseous (FDI) muscle of the foot. A consistent clear response has been observed with recording of the LPN from the FDI muscle. This clarity is not always found with the standard recording site for the LPN. As there are no published normative values for the FDI recording site, the purpose of this study is to describe these values and compare them with standard tibial values.
METHODS: Fifty four healthy adult volunteers with 102 limbs were studied to determine the nerve condu

To better understand the anatomical variations and pathogeny of tarsal tunnel syndrome, the tibial nerve were dissected in 20 ankles of fresh black African cadavers. The tibial nerve located to 1.75 cm on average from the posterior side of the malleolus and to 2 cm from medial side of the calcaneus tendon. The nerve always ended according to dichotomic method. 90% cases of bifurcation were noted under the flexor retinaculum at 1 cm from the malléolo_calcaneus line; in 10% of dissections, we found proximal bifurcation at 5 cm from this line. The medal calcaneus branch which is a collateral bran

The aim of this study was to describe three dogs with permanent fibular nerve injury following tibial plateau levelling osteotomy (TPLO). Fibular nerve injury following TPLO led to atrophy of the cranial tibial muscle, absent hock flexion and a mild lameness. Fibular nerve injury was confirmed in one case with electrodiagnostics. All three cases had a drill tract in the same location, on the caudal aspect of the tibia, immediately distal to the tibial osteotomy. Permanent fibular nerve injury following TPLO occurred with a more caudally positioned plate and care should be taken when drilling t

Overactive bladder (OAB) is a common condition that significantly impacts the quality of life (QoL), well-being and daily functioning for both men and women. Among various treatments, peripheral tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS) emerges as an effective third-line treatment for OAB symptoms, with options for either a percutaneous approach (P-PTNS) or by transcutaneous delivery (T-PTNS). Recent studies have shown negligible differences between P-PTNS and T-PTNS efficacy in alleviating urinary urgency and frequency and QoL improvement and, overall no difference in efficacy over antimuscarinic regim

Phantom limb pain (PLP) is a complex pathophysiologic process involving both the central and peripheral nervous system for which there is no definitive treatment. The number of individuals living with amputated limbs is predicted to increase to 3.5 million by 2050, and up to 80% of these patients will have PLP. In this case report, we will demonstrate successful reduction of PLP in a patient with bilateral phantom toe pain utilizing nerve blockade and subsequent cryoablation of the posterior tibial nerves.

An intraneural hemangioma is a rare, benign mesodermal lesion. We present a case of a three-year-old female with the inability to straighten her right knee and fullness over the right popliteal fossa for one year. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated a T2 hyperintense lesion of the popliteal fossa, within the tibial nerve. The patient underwent an uncomplicated right knee excisional biopsy, which confirmed the diagnosis of an intraneural hemangioma. Although rare, an intraneural hemangioma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of a soft tissue lesion located in the expect
