Preparation and Immunomodulatory Function of Tiger Nut Meal Peptides.

Tiger nut (Cyperus esculentus L.) meal peptides (TMP) are bioactive peptides prepared by hydrolyzing tiger nut meal-a by-product of tiger nut oil extraction-with alkaline protease. These peptides have demonstrated promising immunomodulatory potential. In this study, proteins were extracted from tiger nut meal using the alkali dissolution and acid precipitation method. The enzymatic hydrolysis conditions were then optimized through single-factor experiments and response surface methodology. The optimal hydrolysis conditions were determined as follows: hydrolysis time 4 h, pH 10, enzyme dosage 9

Tiger Shark Attack on a Scuba Diver in New Caledonia.

Herein we report an unprovoked shark attack on a scuba diver in New Caledonia. The species responsible for the attack was identified as a tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier), based on both the victim's testimony and forensic examination. The victim suffered significant loss of soft tissues from one thigh, which resulted in hemorrhagic shock. Even though the event occurred at a remote location, miles away from the nearest hospital, appropriate first aid, immediate deployment of an alert system, and prompt helicopter transfer by an emergency rescue team allowed the victim to be transferred to an int

Eye-of-the-tiger Sign in Neurodegeneration with Brain Iron Accumulation.

A 68-year-old male patient presented to the neurology clinic with tremor, lightheadedness, and a history of syncope. Exam showed mild Parkinsonism. Neuroimaging revealed symmetric lesions of the globus pallidus (the eye-of-the-tiger sign) concerning for neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation (NBIA). Genetic panel for NBIA was ordered, specifically pantothenate kinase-associated neurodegeneration (PKAN), including pantothenate kinase 2 (PanK2) - the genetic marker for the pantothenate kinase enzyme.

Multiple myeloma in an Amur tiger (Panthera tigris altaica).

The Amur tiger (Panthera tigris altaica) is an endangered tiger subspecies. An adult zoo-bred female was found collapsed, and died despite supportive treatment. Hematology and biochemistry showed pancytopenia and hyperglobulinemia, and serum protein electrophoresis revealed a monoclonal band in the β-globulin region. Necropsy demonstrated hemoabdomen, multifocal lytic bone marrow lesions, splenomegaly, and hemorrhagic hepatic nodules, with left medial lobe rupture. There were mutifocal hemorrhages in the subcutis, lung, epicardium, and intestinal mucosa. Histopathology demonstrated plasmacytoi

How do tiger moths jam bat sonar?

The tiger moth Bertholdia trigona is the only animal in nature known to defend itself by jamming the sonar of its predators - bats. In this study we analyzed the three-dimensional flight paths and echolocation behavior of big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) attacking B. trigona in a flight room over seven consecutive nights to determine the acoustic mechanism of the sonar-jamming defense. Three mechanisms have been proposed: (1) the phantom echo hypothesis, which states that bats misinterpret moth clicks as echoes; (2) the ranging interference hypothesis, which states that moth clicks degrade th

Identification of ticks from conflict Sumatran tigers ( Panthera tigris sumatrae ) in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra, Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Vector-borne diseases transmitted by ticks pose risks to both wildlife and humans. In Indonesia, tick-borne infections are rarely considered in differential diagnoses of febrile illnesses such as dengue and malaria, leading to potential underdiagnosis. Wildlife-human conflict, including cases of Sumatran tigers entering residential areas, may facilitate pathogen spillover at the human-animal interface. AIM: This study aimed to identify and characterize molecular features of tick-borne pathogens associated with conflict-affected wildlife using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplif

SARS-CoV-2 within-host population expansion, diversification and adaptation in zoo tigers, lions and hyenas.

SARS-CoV-2 rapidly adapts to new hosts following cross-species transmission; this is highly relevant as unique within-host variants have emerged following infection of susceptible wild and domestic animal species. Furthermore, SARS-CoV-2 transmission from animals (e.g., white-tailed deer, mink, domestic cats, and others) back to humans has been observed, documenting the potential of animal-derived variants to infect humans. Here, we investigate SARS-CoV-2 evolution and host-specific adaptation during an outbreak in Amur tigers (Panthera tigris altaica), African lions (Panthera leo), and spotte

Prevalence and determinants of stereotypic behaviours and physiological stress among tigers and leopards in Indian zoos.

India's charismatic wildlife species are facing immense pressure from anthropogenic-induced environmental perturbations. Zoos play a major role in the conservation of threatened species, but their adaptation in captivity is posing a major challenge globally. Stress from inadequate adaptation could lead to suppression of cognitive functioning and increased display of stereotypic behaviour. It is thus necessary to measure biological traits like behaviour, stress physiology, and contextual factors driving the animals maintained at zoos. In this study, we assessed stereotypic behaviour and stress

Production of live tiger salamander offspring using cryopreserved sperm.

Amphibian conservation breeding programs often rely on assisted reproductive technologies (ART) to produce offspring due to the difficulty of replicating natural reproductive cues under human care. Reproductive management using in-vitro fertilization (IVF) with cryopreserved sperm has been successfully applied to a variety of anurans, yet the approach has seen limited use for internally-fertilizing caudates. This study aimed to test two cryoprotectants, dimethyl formamide (DMFA) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), in combination with three different sperm extenders, HAM's F-10, diluted HAM's F-10,

Defensive responses of titan triggerfish to tiger sharks at a provisioned reef.

Titan triggerfish (Balistoides viridescens) are among the most territorial reef fishes, known for aggressively defending nests from intruders. In the Maldives' Fuvahmulah atoll, where tiger sharks (Galeocerdo cuvier) aggregate in high numbers year-round, we opportunistically documented 10 interactions between these species from February to August 2024 during daily diving operations. Video footage from experienced divers was analyzed to identify and categorize aggressive behaviors, defined as bites (rapid, forceful closure of the jaws on the shark's body) and chases (short pursuits following an

Keratinized Odontogenic Cysts in a Malayan Tiger (Panthera tigris jacksoni).

A 14-year-old male intact Malayan tiger (Panthera tigris jacksoni) was presented for a routine annual wellness exam and comprehensive oral health assessment and treatment, during which an odontogenic cyst was incidentally diagnosed from radiographs. Prior to a second immobilization for computed tomography (CT) and surgical removal of the cyst, the tiger developed anorexia, lethargy, and reluctance to train, which were clinical signs suspected to be reflective of pain secondary to the odontogenic cyst. A CT scan of the skull revealed 2 odontogenic cyst lesions associated with teeth 204-207 and

Fatal captive tiger attack - A case report with review of literature.

The attacks on humans by big captive felids has been an issue of concern for the administration of zoological parks and wildlife conservationists. The theme of human-animal conflict takes a new dimension for the wild animals kept in zoos, circuses, exotic animal farms, and private custody. Despite the potential dangers involved, the zookeepers have to closely interact with the captive tigers for catering to the needs of food, general health, and wellbeing. The literature has described cases of attacks by captive tigers resulting in the death of the primary caretaker. The injuries present on su

Sustained eruptions on Enceladus explained by turbulent dissipation in tiger stripes.

Spacecraft observations suggest that the plumes of Saturn's moon Enceladus draw water from a subsurface ocean, but the sustainability of conduits linking ocean and surface is not understood. Observations show eruptions from "tiger stripe" fissures that are sustained (although tidally modulated) throughout each orbit, and since the 2005 discovery of the plumes. Peak plume flux lags peak tidal extension by ∼1 rad, suggestive of resonance. Here, we show that a model of the tiger stripes as tidally flexed slots that puncture the ice shell can simultaneously explain the persistence of the eruptions

Pentalogy of Fallot in a captive Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica).

A 2-yr-old male Siberian Tiger (Panthera tigris altaica) died during a fight with a conspecific. At necropsy, significant abnormalities included severe cardiomegaly with cardiac malformations consisting of a large atrial septal defect, a membranous ventricular septal defect, overriding aorta, and stenosis of the pulmonary valve with secondary concentric hypertrophy of the right ventricle. Endocardiosis of the mitral valve was also noted. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of a pentalogy of Fallot in a large felid that resulted in sudden death.

Vocal power and pressure-flow relationships in excised tiger larynges.

Despite the functional importance of loud, low-pitched vocalizations in big cats of the genus Panthera, little is known about the physics and physiology of the mechanisms producing such calls. We investigated laryngeal sound production in the laboratory using an excised-larynx setup combined with sound-level measurements and pressure-flow instrumentation. The larynges of five tigers (three Siberian or Amur, one generic non-pedigreed tiger with Bengal ancestry and one Sumatran), which had died of natural causes, were provided by Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo over a five-year period.
