Tinea capitis is a condition usually found only in children. However, its epidemiological profile has changed in recent decades, with regard to age at onset and the causative microorganisms. We report the cases of 4 women over 65 years of age diagnosed with tinea capitis. One presented plaques of alopecia with desquamation and the other 3 developed crusted inflammatory lesions. Cultures were positive for Trichophyton tonsurans (2 patients), Trichophyton rubrum, and Trichophyton mentagrophytes. The relative rarity of tinea capitis in the elderly and the frequently atypical presentation in this

BACKGROUND: Tinea capitis is a common infection among schoolchildren in developing countries. This condition is still under-reported in Madagascar. In order to assess the prevalence of Tinea capitis in Madagascar, we conducted a study in a primary school in Antsirabe, a town located in the country's high central territories.
METHODS: Samples were taken from 210 children in the 4 school classes aged between 6 and 14 years. Only children with scaling lesions or with alopecia were sampled. No microsporic gray-patch ringworm was found in any of the children. Samples were obtained from a total of

Antibodies provide the ability to gain novel insight into various events taking place in living systems. The ability to produce highly specific antibodies to target proteins has allowed for very precise biological questions to be addressed. Importantly, antibodies have been implicated in the pathogenesis of a number of human diseases including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), paraneoplastic syndromes, multiple sclerosis (MS) and human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP). How antibodies cause disease is

Tinea capitis and corporis caused by Trichophyton soudanense were identified in a 6-year-old coloured boy who was born in Zaire and had been living for 3 years in Germany. This dermatophyte is very rarely seen outside the region in Africa where it is endemic. The disease is frequently overlooked at diagnosis because of the pathogen's capacity for causing chronic and oligosymptomatic infections. In our case the tinea did not a become apparent until the patient had been in Germany for 3 years. No-one else in his family had any comparable scalp or skin lesions. Consistent therapy with itraconazol

Background/Objective:Tinea capitis is a common scalp fungal infection with significant implications for public health, particularly in regions where proper hygiene and access to healthcare are limited. Emerging evidence suggests that this disease, particularly in young male individuals, may be related to certain unsanitary practices in barbershop settings, such as the use of contaminated shaving equipment. To increase awareness of the risk of scalp dermatophyte infections by disclosing different cases of tinea capitis that had arisen shortly after hairdressing procedures and providing a compre

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory tinea capitis (TC) is uncommon in adults.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 29-year-old healthy woman presented with a 2-year history of scalp alopecia with purulent discharge. Clinical, trichoscopic, and histological features and the negativity of a first fungal sampling were consistent with the diagnosis of dissecting cellulitis of the scalp. A second mycological examination guided by trichoscopy was carried out, showing tinea endothrix. Fungal culture isolated trichophyton violaceum. The patient was treated with terbinafine with complete healing.
CONCLUSION: The diagnosis of

Dermoscopy is a method of increasing importance in the diagnoses of cutaneous diseases. On the scalp, dermoscopic aspects have been described in psoriasis, lichen planus, seborrheic dermatitis and discoid lupus. We describe the "comma" and "corkscrew hair" dermoscopic aspects found in a child of skin type 4, with tinea capitis.

Trichophyton soudanense is a common cause of tinea capitis in north-western tropical Africa. In European countries, infection seems to occur nearly exclusively in African immigrants and not in the indigenous population. From 1986 to 1995 we obtained 7908 fungal cultures from patients undergoing treatment at the department of Dermatology in Aachen, Germany. During this period we observed eight cases of tinea capitis by T. soudanense in African immigrants aged 2-11 years. One African immigrant suffered from tinea pedis and one German patient demonstrated tinea corporis attributed to T. soudanens

Tinea capitis is a common childhood fungal infection that is extremely rare in newborns, with limited data available. Its clinical presentation may closely resemble that of other dermatological conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis, neonatal lupus erythematosus and congenital syphilis. It is essential to make a definite diagnosis, as tinea capitis treatment requires systemic antifungal therapy. However, successful topical monotherapies have been reported. We report a rare case of neonatal tinea capitis diagnosed in a 24-day-old newborn, presenting with multiple scaly plaques on the scalp, d

Tinea capitis is a fungal infection mostly affecting children. Epidemiology is changing over time due to migration, and it has been estimated that up to 40% of children from certain developing countries are affected. The mechanism of transmission is still unclear although asymptomatic carriage seems to have an influence in establishing persistent reservoirs that can cause or fuel epidemics. Screening and prophylactic treatment of close contacts of tinea capitis patients are therefore recommended by several international guidelines, but vaguely and not consistent. The treatments involved can be

Oral terbinafine is widely used in the treatment of superficial dermatomycoses as well as subcutaneous and systemic mycoses. It is also useful in treating tinea capitis, although for Microsporum canis and some ectothrix organisms, the effectiveness of the drug may be less than for some endothrix infections. In this study, we undertook a double-blind randomized trial comparing standard and double doses of terbinafine given in a pulsed protocol (1 week on, 3 weeks off) in treating Microsporum spp. tinea capitis in 42 individuals. We found that pulsed terbinafine at a higher dose did not improve

INTRODUCTION: Although the diagnosis of tinea capitis is mainly microbiological, the risk of evolution towards cicatricial alopecia in the most severe cases requires empirical treatment based on physical examination and complementary examinations.
METHODS: Two patients were evaluated by physical examination, cutaneous ultrasound and microbiological examination.
RESULTS: Ultrasound showed follicular widening and increased vascularization in Doppler mode. In one of them, the finding of severe inflammatory activity led to the indication of oral corticotherapy.
DISCUSSION: Cutaneous ultrasound

We report the case of an 18-month-old boy who developed a phototoxic skin reaction to terbinafine on his scalp, ears, and face in the form of disseminated erythematous plaques, which resembled subacute lupus erythematosus (SCLE) in their clinical presentation. Skin changes appeared a short time after the boy was exposed to sunlight during the period of time when he was treated with oral terbinafine due to Microsporum canis fungal scalp infection. Tinea capitis is a common dermatophyte infection primarily affecting prepubertal children (1). Microsporum canis remains the predominant causative or

The diagnosis of tinea capitis is usually made by clinical signs and direct microscopic examination. Early diagnosis of this dermatophytic infection, which may cause permanent hair loss if not treated appropriately, is very crucial. In recent years, the use of dermoscopy has helped with early diagnosis. However, when tinea capitis has an atypical course and develops in adulthood, it can be confused with several diseases, such as psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, folliculitis decalvans, acne keloidalis, and dissecting cellulitis. Due to the different treatment approaches and prognoses, it is im

We report an outbreak of Trichophyton soudanense causing tinea capitis and corporis in an orphanage in Myanmar. The thirty orphan children were suspected to have anthropophilic tinea but zoonotic tinea could not be excluded as all children were playing with stray dogs. Direct mycological examinations of hair and scalp samples showed filaments but culture assays remained sterile. We revealed T. soudanense as the infectious agent by PCR amplification of extracted fungal DNA and further sequencing of the PCR products. Children were successfully treated by terbinafine and reinfection was prevented

Inflammatory Tinea capitis (TC) is a rare form of TC. The aim of this study was to review epidemiological, clinical and mycological profile of inflammatory TC. We present a retrospective study (1999-2010), enrolled all the cases of inflammatory TC observed at a referral hospital in the northern Tunisia. One hundred and twenty-one patients with inflammatory TC, 83 male patients (68.6%) and 38 female patients (31.4%) were enrolled. The mean age was about 8 years. A majority of TC (71.9%) were in patients lesser than 10 years of age. Positive family history and contact with animals were noted in
