Parental tobacco use is a serious health issue for all family members. Child health care clinicians are in a unique and important position to address parental smoking because of the regular, multiple contacts with parents and the harmful health consequences to their patients. This article synthesizes the current evidence-based interventions for treatment of adults and applies them to the problem of addressing parental smoking in the context of the child health care setting. Brief interventions are effective, and complementary strategies such as quitlines will improve the chances of parental sm

With substance abuse, harm reduction refers to reducing or replacing use of a harmful product with a less risky agent. But many advertised "non-pharmaceutical" harm reduction alternatives for tobacco smoking are problematic. Studies have revealed inconclusive results using agents including chewing tobacco and e-cigarettes to quit smoking and have demonstrated continued use of these agents. Many smoking harm reduction agents pose other health risks not found in traditional tobacco smoking. Given these limitations, efforts should focus on promoting nicotine replacement therapy, and other pharmac

Healthy China 2030 aims to reduce the adult smoking rate from 27.7% in 2015 to 20% by 2030. Achieving this goal requires a review of the tobacco control measures introduced in China to date, the gaps that remain and the opportunities ahead. In 2008, the World Health Organization introduced six measures to reduce demand for tobacco called MPOWER. The progress China has made in implementing these measure varies: 1) monitor tobacco use and prevention policies. The surveillance on tobacco use has been rigorous, but the monitoring and evaluation of tobacco control policies needs to be strengthened;

We investigated whether changes in perinatal outcomes occurred following introduction of key tobacco control policies in the Netherlands: smoke-free legislation in workplaces plus a tobacco tax increase and mass media campaign (January-February 2004); and extension of the smoke-free law to the hospitality industry, accompanied by another tax increase and mass media campaign (July 2008). This was a national quasi-experimental study using Netherlands Perinatal Registry data (2000-2011; registration: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT02189265). Primary outcome measures were: perinatal mortality, preterm birt

BACKGROUND: Smoking is thought to produce an appetite-suppressing effect by many smokers. Thus, the fear of body weight gain often outweighs the perception of health benefits associated with smoking cessation, particularly in adolescents. We examined whether the tobacco industry played a role in appetite and body weight control related to smoking and smoking cessation.
METHODS: We performed a systematic search within the archives of six major US and UK tobacco companies (American Tobacco, Philip Morris, RJ Reynolds, Lorillard, Brown & Williamson and British American Tobacco) that were Defenda

To design strategies for provider education and implementation of clinical guidelines, this study investigated how physicians (1) approach tobacco cessation, including barriers to screening and treatment, (2) prioritize tobacco cessation, and (3) perceive the role of public health. Semi-structured focus groups were conducted with 30 New York City physicians across specialties. Physicians reported that they: (1) understand risks of smoking, as well as basic counseling and medications for smoking cessation; (2) do not always follow clinical guidelines for treatment of smoking cessation; (3) prio

To maintain relevance, youth tobacco control programs must leverage popular social media platforms and address evolving behaviors. Recognizing this, the South Carolina Department of Public Health and Rescue Agency implemented culturally tailored social media campaigns (Down and Dirty, Fresh Empire), a broad vaping social media campaign (Behind the Haze), and an Instagram-based vaping cessation program (Quit the Hit, QTH). This study examines program impact. The social media campaigns were evaluated via online cross-sectional surveys in 2019-2023. Analyses examined awareness and reception overa

BACKGROUND: Article 5.3 of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) was developed to protect public health policies from tobacco industry interference. The guiding principles of Article 5.3 emphasise a fundamental conflict between the tobacco industry's interests and public health interests (principle 1) and recommend that the government be accountable and transparent (principle 2), demand accountability and transparency from the industry (principle 3), and refrain from providing incentives to the industry (principle 4). This study quantitatively explored attitudes towards Articl

Since its entry into force in February 2005, the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) has had many significant achievements. It is one of the most widely ratified treaties within the United Nations; its Conference of the Parties has adopted many high-quality implementation guidelines, and implementation of the policy guidance in the treaty and its guidelines have decreased tobacco consumption and prevalence. Despite the effectiveness of these measures, however, FCTC implementation has been highly uneven across countries. A medium-term strategic plan was launched to clearly articu

INTRODUCTION: Rates of tobacco use in the U.S. military have traditionally been higher than in the general U.S. population. While the military has experienced decreases in tobacco use over the past two decades, recent surveys suggest a trend of increased use. Given the negative impact of tobacco on both the readiness and the long-term health of military members, it is important to understand what factors may be related to the increased use rates. It has been suggested that there is a culture that supports tobacco use in the military.

BACKGROUND: Influence of habitual tobacco chewing on cardiovascular risk has not been well studied. To determine prevalence of major cardiovascular risk factors in subjects who habitually chew tobacco we performed a controlled study.
METHODS: A population based case-control study was performed in Bikaner in North-western India where the prevalence of tobacco-chewing is high. Successive 200 subjects who agreed to participate in the evaluation and had a history of isolated tobacco-chewing (range 10-60 years) were enrolled (Group III). The prevalence of major coronary risk factors- obesity, trun

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco smoking remains one of the most significant public health challenges, particularly among children and adolescents, for whom early smoking initiation increases the risk of long-term addiction and severe health consequences. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of cigarette and other tobacco product use among adolescents aged 12-16 years in the Subcarpathian Voivodeship and to analyze the factors influencing this phenomenon.
MATERIALS AND METHOD: The study involved a survey conducted among 865 students aged 12-16 years from the Subcarpathian Voivodeship. The

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco endgame strategy includes policies to end the tobacco epidemic. As tobacco smoking prevalence is higher among people with mental health conditions (MHC), understanding the impact of rigorous tobacco control strategies for this group is critical. This study examined support for five tobacco control strategies among people with MHCs: increasing tobacco product tax, reducing tobacco retail locations, ending tobacco sales in alcohol-licensed venues, limiting retailers to one tobacco point of sale and reduced nicotine in smoked tobacco.

INTRODUCTION: The global burden of tobacco is a significant public health concern, causing millions of deaths, illnesses, and economic losses annually. In Türkiye, tobacco use is deeply ingrained in society, with historical roots dating back to Ottoman times. The nation faces challenges such as high smoking rates, gender disparities, and the popularity of non-cigarette tobacco products. Despite these issues, Türkiye has adhered to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) and implemented MPOWER strategies to combat tobacco use effectively. This review aims to synthesize Türkiye's

Tobacco use presents substantial challenges for the environment, social and economic development along global supply chains. Here we assess the global sustainability impacts of tobacco use and control across global supply chains in 164 countries and regions. We find that tobacco use in the top ten downstream countries drove over 50% of global upstream impacts. High-income countries tended to have larger per capita impacts than low-income countries, displacing 42% of health burden and 34% of greenhouse gas emissions to upstream low-income countries. We also observe declines in environmental str

Our paper evaluates the extent to which the brain disease model of addiction (BDMA) has contributed to reducing the prevalence of tobacco smoking and tobacco-related harm over the past 20 years. We discuss the ways in which genetic and neuroscience research on nicotine addiction have contributed to our understanding of tobacco smoking. We then examine the extent to which the BDMA has produced more effective treatments to assist smoking cessation. We also assess the degree to which the BDMA has contributed to the tobacco control policies that have produced substantial reductions in tobacco-rel
