Swipe to Inhale: Tobacco-Related Content on Social Media and Susceptibility to Tobacco Use.

INTRODUCTION: Research has linked youth exposure and engagement with tobacco-related content on social media to behavioral changes; however, there is a lack of studies exploring the source and types of such content and their impact on youth's susceptibility to tobacco use. This study examined the association between the type and source of content posted on social media and susceptibility to tobacco use, defined as curiosity or intention to use tobacco or e-cigarettes. METHODS: Data were from the Population Assessment Tobacco and Health study, a nationally representative cohort study of U.S. y

Correlates of cigarette and alternative tobacco product use among young tobacco users experiencing homelessness.

INTRODUCTION: Most young people experiencing homelessness smoke cigarettes, but little is known about use of alternative tobacco products (ATPs) such as e-cigarettes or other electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) and little cigars/cigarillos (LCCs). This study examines past month use and correlates of cigarettes and ATP among young tobacco users experiencing homelessness. METHODS: We surveyed a probability sample of N = 469 unaccompanied homeless 13-25 year olds (mean age = 22; 71% male), who reported past month use of any type of tobacco product, from 25 service and street sites in Los

Rural and Appalachian cancer survivors' responses to tobacco use screening and tobacco treatment offer.

INTRODUCTION: Smoking after a cancer diagnosis is associated with poor outcomes whereas smoking cessation improves survival and other outcomes. Although professional societies and practice guidelines call for equitable tobacco treatment delivery in healthcare, disparities in tobacco-related disease burden persist. METHODS: In the context of an outpatient US cancer center's population-based tobacco treatment program, this study examines associations between cancer survivors' rural and Appalachian residence status and: 1) current tobacco use status, 2) decision to decline tobacco treatment, and

Tobacco use and readiness to treat tobacco users among primary healthcare professionals in Soweto.

BACKGROUND: Despite its hampering influence on the willingness of healthcare professionals (HCPs) to implement tobacco cessation treatments, the tobacco use status of these professionals remains understudied in South Africa. METHODS: This cross-sectional study, which sampled 444 HCPs, was conducted in five community health centres in Soweto. A self-administered questionnaire collected information on socio-demography, tobacco use, quit attempts and readiness to implement tobacco cessation treatments for their patients. RESULTS: The mean age was 41 years. Most were female, 80% (n = 355); singl

The global impact of tobacco control policies on smokeless tobacco use: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Smokeless tobacco, used by more than 300 million people globally, results in substantial morbidity and mortality. For smokeless tobacco control, many countries have adopted policies beyond the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, which has been instrumental in reducing smoking prevalence. The impact of these policies (within and outside the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control) on smokeless tobacco use remains unclear. We aimed to systematically review policies that are relevant to smokeless tobacco and its context and investigate their impact on smokeless tobacco use.

Adult tobacco use levels after intensive tobacco control measures: New York City, 2002-2003.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to determine the impact of comprehensive tobacco control measures in New York City. METHODS: In 2002, New York City implemented a tobacco control strategy of (1) increased cigarette excise taxes; (2) legal action that made virtually all work-places, including bars and restaurants, smoke free; (3) increased cessation services, including a large-scale free nicotine-patch program; (4) education; and (5) evaluation. The health department also began annual surveys on a broad array of health measures, including smoking. RESULTS: From 2002 to 2003, smoking prevalence among New

Cannabis Co-Use and Endocannabinoid System Modulation in Tobacco Use Disorder.

Tobacco use disorder (TUD) remains a leading cause of preventable mortality, and existing pharmacotherapies yield 12-month abstinence rates below 30%. As cannabis legalization expands, approximately 18-22% of people who use tobacco report concurrent cannabis use, yet the impact of co-use on cessation outcomes and the therapeutic potential of endocannabinoid system (ECS) modulation remain unclear. We conducted a translational systematic review and meta-analysis following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, searching Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, APA PsycInfo, and Web of Science through January 2026 (PROSPERO: CRD4

Mental health outcomes associated with electronic cigarette use, combustible tobacco use, and dual use among U.S. adolescents: Insights from the National Youth Tobacco Survey.

Adolescence is a critical period for mental health development. There are increasing rates of anxiety, depression, and suicide among adolescents in the United States (U.S.). Tobacco use, especially electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) and dual use with combustible tobacco products (CTP), poses a significant threat to adolescent mental health. This study examines the association between various tobacco use profiles and mental health outcomes among U.S. middle and high school students. Data from the 2021-2023 National Youth Tobacco Survey were analyzed. Three-quarters of eligible students comple

Educating Substance Use Treatment Center Providers on Tobacco Use Treatments Is Associated with Increased Provision of Counseling and Medication to Patients Who Use Tobacco.

Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of death in America and is elevated among patients with non-tobacco substance use disorders. Substance use treatment centers (SUTCs) do not commonly address their patients' tobacco use. Lack of knowledge on treating tobacco use with counseling and medication may be a barrier that underlies this inaction. A multi-component tobacco-free workplace program implemented in Texas SUTCs educated providers on treating tobacco use with evidence-based medication (or referral) and counseling. This study examined how center-level changes in knowledge from pre- t

Minor Tobacco Alkaloids as Biomarkers to Distinguish Combusted Tobacco Use From Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems Use. Two New Analytical Methods.

Biomarkers for the use of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) are desirable for studies of the health effects of electronic cigarettes and related devices. However, the aerosols inhaled from these devices do not contain substances that are unique to this class of products, i.e., substances that are not present in cigarette smoke or those that do not have common environmental or dietary sources. Consequently, identifying selective biomarkers for ENDS use remains a challenge. If co-use of conventional tobacco products can be definitively ruled out, then nicotine and its metabolites are s

Recommendations for Standardization of Tobacco Use Treatment Data.

INTRODUCTION: Although there is widespread acceptance of the importance of assessing and treating tobacco use in cancer care settings, there is much variation in the documentation and reporting of metrics relevant to tobacco treatment. The Cancer Center Cessation Initiative (C3I), as part of the National Cancer Institute's Cancer Moonshot, convened a Metrics Standardization Workgroup to develop a data dictionary and make recommendations for standardized quality measurement, program evaluation, and tobacco treatment program development. METHODS: A multidisciplinary workgroup of 12 subject matt

Improving Wastewater-Based Tobacco Use Estimates Using Anabasine.

In wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE), nicotine metabolites have been used as biomarkers for monitoring tobacco use. Recently, the minor tobacco alkaloids anabasine and anatabine have been suggested as more specific biomarkers for tobacco use since nicotine use can be from both tobacco and non-tobacco sources. This study aimed to provide an in-depth evaluation of the suitability of anabasine and anatabine as WBE biomarkers of tobacco and subsequently estimate their excretion factors for WBE applications. Pooled urine (n = 64) and wastewater samples (n = 277), collected between 2009 and 2019 i
