OBJECTIVES: Cue-reactivity is a critical step leading to the emergence of addictive psychology and the triggering of addictive behaviors within the framework of addiction theory and is considered a significant risk factor for addiction-related behaviors. However, the effect of cue-reactivity targeted smoking cessation intervention and the cue-reactivity paradigms used in the randomized controlled trials varies, which introduces more heterogeneity and makes a side-by-side comparison of cessation responses difficult. Therefore, the scoping review aims to integrate existing research and identify

BACKGROUND: Many studies have investigated the association of the methylation of gene and tobacco use disorders (TUD), but results remain ambiguous.
AIMS: This study evaluated the relationship between methylation of Adenomatosis Polyposis Coli (APC), Nuclear Receptor subfamily 3 group C member 1 (NR3C1), Dopamine D2 receptor (DRD2) gene promoters, and its effect on TUD.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We recruited 154 active smokers and 111 healthy non-smoker controls. PCR based methods on genomic DNA characterized the methylation of APC2, NR3C1, and DRD2 gene promoters.
RESULTS: We have found a sign

Chronic tobacco consumption, identified as Tobacco Use Disorder (TUD), is a public health problem. We present a case report of a 37-year-old Brazilian male diagnosed with TUD at age 26, with no comorbidities, that presented visual improvements (i.e., lower thresholds and better discrimination) after nicotine gum administration. Here, we assessed contrast sensitivity and chromatic discrimination using the Metropsis and the Cambridge Colour Test, respectively. Results showed lower thresholds for both visual tasks after the use of nicotine gum. Even considering this is a single case report, our i

BACKGROUND: Across the United States, substance use disorder (SUD) treatment programs vary in terms of tobacco-related policies and cessation services offered. Implementation of tobacco-related policies within this setting can face several barriers. Little is known about how program leadership anticipate such barriers at the pre-implementation phase. This study used the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) during the pre-implementation stage to identify factors that may influence the implementation stage of tobacco-related cessation policies and services in residential SUD

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The prevalence of tobacco smoking among individuals receiving treatment for substance use disorder (SUD) remains high. Respiratory disease and other harms are of prime concern to health policy-makers, given the contributory role played by tobacco smoking in the excess rates of premature mortality seen in individuals with SUD. The aim was to use SUD treatment data to investigate tobacco smoking prevalence among subgroups of adults over the course of treatment.
METHODS: We used the English National Drug Treatment Monitoring System (NDTMS) to examine number of days tobacco ha

Cigarette smoking causes premature mortality and multiple morbidity; stop smoking improves health. Higher rates of smoking cessation can be achieved through more intensive treatment, consisting of medication and extended counseling of patients, but there are challenges to integrating these interventions into healthcare delivery systems. A care model using a master-level counselor trained as a tobacco treatment specialist (TTS) to deliver behavioral intervention, teamed with a supervising physician/prescriber, affords an opportunity to integrate more intensive tobacco dependence treatment into

BACKGROUND: Research on individual differences in brain structural features of internet gaming disorder (IGD) and established addictions such as tobacco use disorder (TUD) is currently limited. This study utilized normative modeling to analyze the cortical thickness (CT) development patterns of male patients with IGD and TUD, aiming to provide further insights into whether IGD qualifies as an addiction.
METHODS: Surface-based brain morphometry (SBM) was used to calculate CT from T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging data of 804 male participants (665 healthy individuals, 68 IGD and 71 TUD).

BACKGROUND: Many studies have attempted to understand the neural basis of internet gaming disorder (IGD) to explore if IGD could be diagnosed as an addictive behavior. However, those findings were often inconsistent due to the participants having varying craving levels. Individual brain activities in the abstinence state are different from that in the neutral state. Therefore, exploring the responses of the brain during abstinence in IGD and comparing them with substance addiction is crucial in understanding this complex, craving-prone disorder.

Limited evidence exists on the association between electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) and chronic respiratory disorders. This study examines the association of combustible tobacco and ENDS use with chronic respiratory disorders among US adults. Public-use data from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study Wave 1 (2013-2014), Wave 2 (2014-2015), Wave 3 (2015-2016), and Wave 4 (2016-2018) were pooled. Analyses focused on adults with W1-W4 respiratory disorder data and current tobacco use at W4, as well as youth entering the adult cohort at W2 through W4 (N = 26,072).

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco and nicotine use are prevalent in residential substance use disorder (SUD) treatment programs that serve pregnant and parenting women. This study evaluated a group intervention that integrates knitting instruction, psychoeducation, and social support to improve readiness to quit and reduce tobacco and nicotine use among this population.
METHODS: Clients and staff in four residential SUD treatment programs were assigned to a six-week group intervention or a wait-list control group. Intervention implementation and preliminary effectiveness were assessed using surveys, inte

A California-sponsored, 18-month, tobacco-free intervention in residential substance use disorder (SUD) programs was associated with increases in tobacco-free grounds and tobacco-related client services. The current study examined whether positive results would be replicated in 11 programs participating subsequently. Program directors (N = 11) completed surveys of tobacco-related policies pre- and post-intervention. Pre- (n = 163) and post-intervention (n = 128) cross-sectional staff surveys examined tobacco-related training, beliefs, practices, smoking policy, and smoking status. Directors re

BACKGROUND: Smoking and alcohol use often co-occur, and the use of nicotine-containing products is particularly common among persons with alcohol use disorder (AUD). Recent evidence shows that chronic alcohol use leads to inflammation through increased gut permeability and dysregulated cytokine levels. While cigarette smoking also has detrimental health effects, nicotine has immune dampening effects in some settings. Preclinical evidence demonstrates that nicotine can dampen alcohol-induced inflammation, but inflammatory responses after nicotine use has not been studied in persons with AUD. Th

BACKGROUND: Although there is considerable evidence that the development of tobacco dependence (TD) and that of alcohol use disorder (AUD) are intertwined, less is known about the comorbid development of these disorders. The present study examines tobacco dependence and alcohol use disorder comorbidity in young adulthood within the context of romantic partner relationships.
METHODS: Data were drawn from the Seattle Social Development Project, a contemporary, ethnically diverse, and gender balanced longitudinal panel including 808 participants. A typological person-centered approach was used t

BACKGROUND: Smoking rates in people with alcohol and other drug dependencies are two to four times those of the general population. Concurrent treatment of tobacco dependence has been limited due to concern that these interventions are not successful in this population or that recovery from other addictions could be compromised if tobacco cessation was combined with other drug dependency treatment.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate whether interventions for tobacco cessation are associated with tobacco abstinence for people in concurrent treatment for or in recovery from alcohol and other drug dependen

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Tobacco use, sex differences, and psychiatric disorders are associated with altered immune function. There are also sex differences in tobacco use and psychiatric disorders. This review summarizes findings from the small, but growing literature examining sex differences in the effects of tobacco use on inflammation and the implications for psychiatric disorders.
RECENT FINDINGS: We identified four studies that tested the interaction between sex and tobacco/nicotine on inflammation. Although males and females generally exhibited differential tobacco-induced immune responses,

BACKGROUND: Substance use disorders are under-detected and not systematically diagnosed or screened for by primary care. In this study, we present the acceptability and validity of an Embodied Conversational Agent (ECA) designed to screen tobacco and alcohol use disorder, in individuals who did not seek medical help for these disorders.
METHODS: Individuals were included from June 2016 to May 2017 in the Outpatient Sleep Clinic of the University Hospital of Bordeaux. DSM-5 diagnoses of tobacco and alcohol use disorders were assessed by human interviewers. The ECA interview integrated items fr

Consumption of tobacco has been a worldwide problem over the past few decades due to the highly prevalent tobacco-attributable complications. Tobacco use has also been found to be more prevalent in patients with psychiatric disorders. Therefore, we conducted this review about the impact of tobacco use on co-occurring psychiatric disorders. Various facets of this interaction between tobacco use among those with co-occurring psychiatric disorders have been explored. It has been found that people with psychiatric disorders have a higher chance of currently smoking tobacco and lesser chance of ces

We discuss potential explanations for the high prevalence of tobacco use and tobacco dependence (TD) in people with mental health and addictive (MHA) disorders. The biopsychosocial basis for this comorbidity is presented, integrating evidence from epidemiologic and clinical studies. We also review evidence that suggests a shared vulnerability related to biological, genetic, and environmental factors may be the most parsimonious mechanism to explain the association between TD and MHA disorders. Finally, we review the examples of various MHA disorders that are associated with TD, and suggest ave
