The role of Optical Coherence Tomography in optic neuropathies.

UNLABELLED: Optical neuropathies are neuro-ophthalmologic disorders, the main symptoms of which are the decrease of visual acuity and the alteration of the color vision. Optical coherence tomography has been one of the most important innovations in ophthalmology, which offered the possibility to analyze specific structures of the retina. Optical coherence tomography performs in vivo, real-time, noncontact scanning and provides cross-sectional and volumetric images with a resolution approaching that of histology. Optical coherence tomography offers the opportunity to study neurological diseases

Optical Clearing with Tartrazine Enables Deep Transscleral Imaging with Optical Coherence Tomography.

Suprachoroidal injections are a relatively new method of drug delivery to treat retinal disease. At present, it is difficult to visualize the distribution of injection-delivered product beneath the sclera into the suprachoroidal space. Imaging the suprachoroidal space with OCT is hindered by scattering of light from densely packed collagen fibers of the sclera, limiting depth penetration of the OCT light. In this Letter, we demonstrate the first use of tartrazine (Yellow 5) as an optical clearing agent for suprachoroidal research imaging with OCT in an ex vivo eye model. Our results show that

Optical coherence tomography and its use in optical neuritis and multiple sclerosis.

Optical coherence tomography is a relatively new non-invasive imaging technique used for obtaining the images and quantifying the layers of the retina. It also provides information about optic nerve head topography, peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness, and macular volume which correlates with axonal loss. Until now, this method was used mainly in ophthalmology; now it has emerged as relevant in neurology as well. RNFL thickness is of particular interest in optic neuropathies and in multiple sclerosis. In sclerosis multiplex, axonal loss occurs as early as the first stages and the

Imaging the optic nerve with optical coherence tomography.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive imaging technology, which may be used to generate in vivo quantitative and qualitative measures of retinal structure. In terms of quantitative metrics, peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) thickness provides an indirect evaluation of axonal integrity within the optic nerve. Ganglion layer measures derived from macular scans indirectly reflect retinal ganglion cell status. Notably, ganglion layer indices are platform dependent and may include macular ganglion cell inner plexiform layer (mGCIPL), ganglion cell layer (GCL), and gangl

Phase-sensitive photothermal optical coherence tomography: decoupling optical and thermal tissue properties.

Photothermal optical coherence tomography (PT-OCT) has emerged as a promising extension of OCT for molecular contrast imaging, yet conventional amplitude-based PT-OCT is responsive, as opposed to being specific, to molecular contrast due to the multifactorial dependence of phase signals. Here, we present a phase-sensitive extension of PT-OCT that exploits PT phase to generate molecular contrast based on intrinsic thermal transport properties. We develop a theoretical model that links the PT-OCT phase response to the sample's thermal diffusivity and effusivity, and show that, in contrast to amp

Optical clearing with tartrazine enables deep transscleral imaging with optical coherence tomography.

SIGNIFICANCE: Imaging deep structures with optical coherence tomography (OCT) is difficult in highly scattering biological tissue, such as the sclera. There is a need to visualize the suprachoroidal space and choroid through the sclera to study suprachoroidal drug delivery. AIM: We aim to develop optical methods to image through the highly scattering sclera with a custom-built OCT system to visualize the suprachoroidal space and drug delivery within. APPROACH: We developed a custom handheld OCT scanner to image the anterior segment and suprachoroidal space in ex vivo eye models. Tartrazine (

Effect of tissue frozen on quantitative optical properties using optical coherence tomography.

The purpose is to demonstrate the optical charactering concerning nasopharyngeal tissue of pig by fresh sections and frozen correlating sections with optical coherence tomography (OCT). After being imaged on a fresh specimen, samples are then stored in low temperature refrigerators (-80°C) for one year for the second OCT measurement. The OCT structure of the epithelium, lamina propria, and the basement membrane are still resolvable; the median scattering coefficients and anisotropy factors fitting from OCT images based on the multiple scattering effects for epithelium are 27.6  mm-1 [interquar

Optical coherence tomography angiography: Principles and applications.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has become an indispensable ophthalmic imaging modality in both research and clinical practice due to its ability to noninvasively provide volumetric imaging of the retina at high resolution. However, despite achieving the necessary resolution, structural OCT cannot image microvascular features, including capillaries because they have low reflectance contrast with surrounding tissue. OCT angiography (OCTA) overcomes this limitation by acquiring consecutive images at a single location. Doing so enables the construction of motion contrast images in which blood

Optical Coherence Tomography in Acute Coronary Syndromes.

Angiography remains the standard imaging modality during cardiac catheterization; however, this technique provides only a two-dimensional representation of the coronary lumen, which limits the assessment of vessel wall pathology. In comparison, intravascular imaging techniques, such as intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and optical coherence tomography (OCT), provide high-resolution cross-sectional and two-dimensional reconstructions of the coronary arteries. Thus, these modalities complement angiographic findings, enable detailed evaluation of underlying pathology, and facilitate precise procedu

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) parameters in amblyopia.

BACKGROUND: Publications on optical coherence tomography (OCT) parameters in amblyopic eyes compared to fellow eyes are discordant. Our study not only compares OCT data of fellow and amblyopic eyes, but is the first study to deliver pilot results on OCT parameter changes after long-term electronic monitoring of occlusion therapy. METHODS: Thirty eyes with strabismic, anisometropic or mixed amblyopia and the corresponding fellow eyes underwent OCT of the macula and optic disc with a Topcon 3D-OCT-2000. In a subgroup of six patients, the same examinations were additionally performed at the end

Optical coherence tomography angiography in cardiovascular disease.

Endothelial dysfunction and microvascular remodeling underly the development and progression of a host of cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, current methods to assess coronary epicardial microvascular function are invasive, time-intensive, and costly. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is an established technology within ophthalmology that provides a quick, noninvasive assessment of vascular structures within the retina. As a growing body of evidence reveals strong associations between the retinal changes on OCTA and the development and progression of CVD, OCTA may indeed be a
