OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to describe the reliance on female permanent contraception among women with demand for family planning satisfied with modern methods (mDFPS) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and to describe socio-economic and demographic patterns of permanent contraception in countries with high use.
STUDY DESIGN: Using data from the latest national health survey carried out in LMICs, we estimated mDFPS and the share of each contraceptive method used. Countries with a share of more than 25% of female permanent contraception were further explored for differences by wealth, num

Rheumatic fever is very common in Samoa. The following paper describes the Rheumatic Fever Programme in Samoa and looks at the incidence of acute rheumatic fever (ARF) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD). The incidence of ARF has decreased to 30 per 100,000 in 2005, 12.8 per 100,000 in 2007, 7.3 per 100,000 in 2008, and 9.5 per 100,000 in 2009. The incidence of RHD has decreased to 40.2 per 100,000 in 2007, 34 per 100,000 in 2008, and 31.8 per 100,000 in 2009. Cardiac surgery in New Zealand is expensive, but is cheaper to perform in Samoa. RHD screening with echocardiogram at schools may be the

For cetaceans, population structure is traditionally determined by molecular genetics or photographically identified individuals. Acoustic data, however, has provided information on movement and population structure with less effort and cost than traditional methods in an array of taxa. Male humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) produce a continually evolving vocal sexual display, or song, that is similar among all males in a population. The rapid cultural transmission (the transfer of information or behavior between conspecifics through social learning) of different versions of this displa

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the global, regional, and national epidemiological trends of liver cancer in hepatitis B patients attributable to high body mass index (BMI) from 1990 to 2021, with an emphasis on health inequalities.
METHODS: Using the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021 study, we assessed the temporal trends in mortality and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) for liver cancer attributable to high BMI among hepatitis B patients. We also analyzed how liver cancer mortality and DALYs varied by age, period, and birth cohort. The BAPC model was used to project trends from 2021 to 2050.

INTRODUCTION: Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease of mammals caused by bacterial species of the Brucella genus. The reservoir for disease is typically mammals, with species of Brucella found infecting amphibians, bats, and marine mammals. Brucella spp. can pass directly to humans through contact with infected animals or their products. Brucella spp. can cause chronic debilitating infections in mammals, including humans, and is associated with spontaneous abortions in infected animals, causing reduced fecundity. In Hawai'i, terrestrial species that could harbor Brucella spp. include swine, cattle

INTRODUCTION: Reducing unmet need for modern contraception and expanding access to quality maternal health (MH) services are priorities for improving women's health and economic empowerment. To support investment decisions, we estimated the additional cost and expected health and economic benefits of achieving the United Nations targets of zero unmet need for modern contraceptive choices and 95% coverage of MH services by 2030 in select Small Island Developing States.

Though little scientific evidence existed to support the belief among dentists who treat Pacific Islander populations that many children of the region erupt secondary teeth earlier and at an eruption rate which exceeds Caucasian children. Based upon a data set created in Hawai'i during the 1998-1999 school year, of 26,097 public school children, the opportunity presented itself to examine for variance in eruption timing and sequence. Hawai'i is an ethnic diverse community, with a majority population comprised of Asians and Pacific Islanders. Children, 5 through 9 years of age, were examined fo

Child and adolescent mental health (CAMH) has become an increasingly important public health issue worldwide and particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in the Western Pacific Region (WPR), where access to quality mental health care remains limited. The existing evidence on CAMH in the region is fragmented and insufficient for guiding further development and improvements in CAMH services. Against this background, we conducted a scoping review to provide the most recent evidence of the resources (legal, financial, human, infrastructural) allocated to CAMH and the effectiveness

BACKGROUND: Empirical evidence regarding maternal quality and safety outcomes across heterogeneous Asian and Pacific Islanders subgroups in the United States is limited, despite the importance of this topic to health disparities research and quality improvement efforts.
METHODS: Detailed discharge data from all Hawai'i childbirth hospitalizations (n = 75,725) from 2008 to 2012 were considered. Validated measures of maternal quality and safety were compared in descriptive and multivariable models across seven racial/ethnic groups: Filipino, Native Hawaiian, other Pacific Islander (e.g., Samoan

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most prevalent degenerative joint diseases worldwide and is characterized by chronic pain and functional decline, particularly among older adults. High body mass index (BMI) is a key modifiable risk factor associated with OA and may influence OA burden through biomechanical and metabolic pathways. This study aimed to assess the regional and national burden of OA attributable to high BMI in the Western Pacific Region from 1990 to 2023.
METHODS: This ecological secondary data analysis used Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2023 data to quantify the bur

BACKGROUND: The gene PPARGC1A, in particular the Gly482Ser variant (rs8192678), had been proposed to be subject to natural selection, particularly in recent progenitors of extant Polynesian populations. Reasons include high levels of population differentiation and increased frequencies of the derived type 2 diabetes (T2D) risk 482Ser allele, and association with body mass index (BMI) in a small Tongan population. However, no direct statistical tests for selection have been applied.
METHODS: Using a range of Polynesian populations (Tongan, Māori, Samoan) we re-examined evidence for association

BACKGROUND: Periodontal diseases among working-age individuals (15-69 years) represent a significant global health challenge, impacting oral health, quality of life, and economic productivity. Defined according to the 2021 Global Burden of Disease (GBD) framework, periodontal disease in this study encompasses symptoms such as halitosis, altered taste sensation, and occasional gingival bleeding that do not impair daily activities. Despite their prevalence, comprehensive analyses of the global burden of periodontal diseases specifically within this demographic remain limited.
METHODS: We analyz

IMPORTANCE: Cancer and other noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are now widely recognized as a threat to global development. The latest United Nations high-level meeting on NCDs reaffirmed this observation and also highlighted the slow progress in meeting the 2011 Political Declaration on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases and the third Sustainable Development Goal. Lack of situational analyses, priority setting, and budgeting have been identified as major obstacles in achieving these goals. All of these have in common that they require information on the local cancer epidemio

IMPORTANCE: The increasing burden due to cancer and other noncommunicable diseases poses a threat to human development, which has resulted in global political commitments reflected in the Sustainable Development Goals as well as the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Action Plan on Non-Communicable Diseases. To determine if these commitments have resulted in improved cancer control, quantitative assessments of the cancer burden are required.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the burden for 29 cancer groups over time to provide a framework for policy discussion, resource allocation, and research focus.

According to the global cancer observatory (GLOBOCAN), there are approximately 18 million new cancer cases per year worldwide. Cancer therapies are largely limited to surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. In radiotherapy and chemotherapy, the maximum tolerated dose is presently being used to treat cancer patients. The integrated development of innovative nanoparticle (NP) based approaches will be a key to address one of the main issues in both radiotherapy and chemotherapy: normal tissue toxicity. Among other inorganic NP systems, gold nanoparticle (GNP) based systems offer the means to fur

Bacteriophages are pervasive viruses that infect bacteria, relying on their genetic machinery to replicate. In order to protect themselves from this kind of invader, bacteria developed an ingenious adaptive defence system, clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR). Researchers soon realised that a specific type of CRISPR system, CRISPR-Cas9, could be modified into a simple and efficient genetic engineering technology, with several improvements over currently used systems. This discovery set in motion a revolution in genetics, with new and improved CRISPR systems being

CRISPR/Cas9 (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats-associated protein 9) shows the opportunity to treat a diverse array of untreated various genetic and complicated disorders. Therapeutic genome editing processes that target disease-causing genes or mutant genes have been greatly accelerated in recent years as a consequence of improvements in sequence-specific nuclease technology. However, the therapeutic promise of genome editing has yet to be explored entirely, many challenges persist that increase the risk of further mutations. Here, we highlighted the main challenges fa
