Solitary Fibrous Tumor of the Tongue: a Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a fibroblastic neoplasm of uncertain biological origin that is rare in the tongue. CASE REPORT: A 42-year-old woman presented with a painless, submucosal nodule in the tongue. Based on the clinical hypothesis of benign mesenchymal neoplasia, the lesion was excised, and the specimen was submitted for histopathological analysis. Microscopically, a proliferation of spindle cells with a patternless arrangement was observed, separated by dilated and angulated vascular spaces. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed positivity for CD34, CD99, Bcl-2, Ki-67

Reticulated myxoid tumor of the tongue: 2 cases supporting an expanded clinical and immunophenotypic spectrum of ectomesenchymal chondromyxoid tumor of the tongue.

An ectomesenchymal chondromyxoid tumor (ECMT) is a rare neoplasm that exclusively occurs in the anterior dorsum of the tongue. The tumor consists of small round to fusiform or spindle cells with myxoid or chondroid stroma. The tumor consistently shows a positive reaction with glial fibrillary acidic protein antibodies, especially polyclonal antibodies. We report 2 cases of reticulated myxoid tumors arising in the tongue. One tumor occurred in the posterior dorsum of the tongue and another in the anterior. Both tumors showed characteristic morphology of ECMT; however, both were negative for rea

Chemoprevention of 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide-induced oral carcinogenesis by citrus auraptene in rats.

The modifying effects of citrus auraptene given during the initiation and post-initiation phases of oral carcinogenesis initiated with 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide (4-NQO) were investigated in male F344 rats. At 6 weeks of age, animals were divided into experimental and control groups, and fed the diets containing 100 ppm or 500 ppm auraptene. At 7 weeks of age, all animals except those treated with auraptene alone and control groups were given 4-NQO (20 ppm) in the drinking water for 8 weeks to induce tongue carcinoma. Starting 7 days before the 4-NQO exposure, groups of animals were fed the diet

Tongue Flap for Closure of an Oronasal Communication Induced by Cocaine Use.

Oro-nasal fistulas may result from congenital defects, trauma, infections, neoplasms, or chronic cocaine use, affecting speech, swallowing, and quality of life. The tongue flap stands out for its rich vascularization and low donor-site morbidity. A 36-year-old female presented with nasal speech and liquid regurgitation through the nose. She had a history of chronic cocaine use for 7 years, discontinued 2 years prior. Clinical and radiographic examination revealed a 2.0 cm oro-nasal fistula in the hard palate. Reconstruction was performed under general anesthesia using an anteriorly based pedic

Angiosarcoma arising from the tongue of an 11-year-old girl with xeroderma pigmentosum.

Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is a rare autosomal recessive defect in DNA endonuclease activity that is associated with the development of cutaneous malignancies, at sun exposed sites, including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Squamous cell carcinomas are also known to target the anterior tongue. Patients sometimes develop angiosarcomas, and these invariably arise from sun-exposed skin. A biopsy was taken from a large mass arising in the anterior tongue of an 11-year-old girl with XP and a history of cutaneous basal cell carcinomas. The histopathologic findings demons

Enigmatic presentation of glomus tumour of the tongue: diagnostic insights.

Glomus tumour is a soft tissue neoplasm that is associated with the subungual region owing to the presence of the glomus body. A 53-year-old female patient was referred to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology with the chief complaint of a swelling on the tongue of 3 months' duration. An ultrasound of the tongue suggested a vascular malformation. Histopathology revealed a well-defined proliferation of cells around blood vessels, surrounded by muscle and collagen fibres. A majority of the cells were clear with distinct nuclei. Some cells had an eosinophilic granular cytoplasm. Hist

Cavernous hemangioma of the tongue: A rare case report.

Hemangiomas are developmental vascular abnormalities and more than 50% of these lesions occur in the head and neck region, with the lips, tongue, buccal mucosa, and palate most commonly involved. They are considered as hamartomas rather than true neoplasms. Here we report a case of hemangioma of the body of the tongue, discussing the diagnostic aspects and treatment modalities of such lesion and emphasizing the role of the color Doppler ultrasonography, especially in the diagnosis and treatment. Factors such as patient's age, size and site of lesion and the proximity of lesion to vital structu

CT and MRI Key Features of Benign Tumors and Tumor-like Lesions of the Tongue: A Pictorial Review.

Benign neoplasms and tumor-like lesions of the tongue are relatively rare entities, encompassing a heterogeneous spectrum of morphological alterations. The recent literature focusing on benign tumors and tumor-like lesions of the tongue is relatively limited, which may lead to a gap in understanding their specific imaging characteristics. Most benign tongue tumors usually appear as submucosal bulges located in the deep portion of the tongue. Both computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are essential for the comprehensive diagnostic evaluation of these entities. Cross-sect

Applications of Extracellular Matrix Biomaterial in Tongue Reconstruction.

Tongue neoplasms are common in the head and neck region and are primarily treated through surgical interventions. Various reconstruction techniques, such as primary closure, skin grafts, skin substitute biomaterials, and free tissue transfer, are used to address the resulting defects. This study provides an overview of our experience utilizing extracellular matrix-based biomaterials (ECM) for the reconstruction of tongue defects and evaluates the mean volumetric size of postsurgical tongue. This retrospective case series evaluated subjects with tongue defects secondary to benign or malignant r

Synovial Sarcoma of the Tongue: Report of a Case.

This report outlines the workup and management of a 55-year-old woman with a synovial sarcoma of the lateral border of the tongue that was initially diagnosed as a glomus tumor. A review was performed of the literature on synovial sarcomas of the oral cavity and current National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines. Synovial sarcomas of the tongue are rare neoplasms, with variable morphologic microscopic types and immunohistochemical profiles. Fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis of the known gene translocation also can be used in diagnosis. According to the literature, resection of

Aberrant CD4 Expression in Plasma Cell Myeloma With Unusual Morphology: A Rare Diagnostic Pitfall.

Plasma cell myeloma (PCM) is a clonal plasma cell neoplasm diagnosed by its characteristic morphology and immunophenotype. Rarely, it shows significant morphological and immunophenotypic heterogeneity, mimicking other hematolymphoid malignancies. This case highlights PCM with deceptive morphology and aberrant T-cell marker expression, underscoring a key diagnostic pitfall. A 62-year-old female presented with an indurated lesion on the left lateral aspect of the tongue and left shoulder swelling for one month, with associated constitutional symptoms. Laboratory investigations showed anemia, rai
