Endoscopic removal of supernumerary tooth from the nasal cavity of a child: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: A case report showing the removal of a supernumerary tooth from the nasal cavity by means of an endoscopic approach is presented. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 9-year-old healthy child presented to our department because of the right central incisor which appeared clinically rotated. The observation of orthopantomography revealed the presence of a supernumerary tooth in the anterior maxilla with the crown positioned towards the nasal floor. The maxillary CT demonstrated a quite close relationship of the tooth with the nasal cavity, so a nasal approach was planned. RESULTS: Under gen

Apc inhibition of Wnt signaling regulates supernumerary tooth formation during embryogenesis and throughout adulthood.

The ablation of Apc function or the constitutive activation of beta-catenin in embryonic mouse oral epithelium results in supernumerary tooth formation, but the underlying mechanisms and whether adult tissues retain this potential are unknown. Here we show that supernumerary teeth can form from multiple regions of the jaw and that they are properly mineralized, vascularized, innervated and can start to form roots. Even adult dental tissues can form new teeth in response to either epithelial Apc loss-of-function or beta-catenin activation, and the effect of Apc deficiency is mediated by beta-ca

Mandibular midline supernumerary tooth associated with agenesis of permanent central incisors: a diagnostic conundrum.

Concomitant hypo-hyperdontia is a rare mixed numeric anomalous condition. The presence of this condition in the same area of dental arch and specifically in the mandibular anterior region is reported very infrequently. This case report presents a case of 20 years old male with congenitally missing permanent mandibular central incisors in conjunction with a mandibular midline supernumerary tooth. Only 3 cases have been documented in English literature till date. The article focuses on the review of mandibular mesiodens and the clarity regarding the usage of the terminology "mesiodens".

Fusion of a supernumerary tooth to right mandibular second molar: a case report and literature review.

Gemination or fusion is a rare occurrence in the mandibular posterior teeth. The aim of this article is to describe the problems encountered and the strategy employed in treating such cases. A 34 years old patient came with the complaint of spontaneous and radiating pain in the right mandibular posterior region. The tooth in concern was an anomalous 'double' second mandibular molar diagnosed as having necrotic pulp with chronic apical abscess of endodontic origin. The present case emphasizes the importance of identifying anatomical anomalies during treatment of fused teeth with supernumerary t

Unilateral fusion of a supernumerary tooth to a maxillary permanent lateral incisor: a report of a rare case.

A supernumerary tooth is an additional entity to the normal series of teeth that may occur in isolation or may be fused to a normal counterpart. Diagnosis and delineation of an accurate treatment plan in cases involving supernumerary teeth are often a challenge. This report describes a case of unilateral fusion of a supernumerary tooth to a maxillary permanent lateral incisor in which a conservative approach was used to reach a favorable outcome.

Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor in anterior maxilla associated with a supernumerary tooth: a case report.

Odontogenic tumors are derived from epithelial, ectomesenchymal and/or mesenchymal elements that are or have been a part of the tooth-forming apparatus. Of all the odontogenic tumors, calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor accounts for 1% of the cases. Approximately 200 cases have been reported to date. There is no sex predilection, with a 2:1 predilection for the mandible, mostly in the premolar/molar region. It is often locally invasive. Most often, it is associated with an impacted tooth, is asymptomatic and requires biopsy for diagnosis. Presented here is a rare case of an intraosseous ca

Sarjeev's supernumerary tooth notation system: a universally compatible add-on to the Two-Digit system.

AIM: To give notation for quadrants, tooth position, and the type of supernumerary teeth for both permanent and deciduous dentition. Tooth numbering provides dentists with an essential shortcut in clinical record keeping. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three systems are favored worldwide: the Zsigmondy/Palmer system, the Universal system, and the Federation Dentaire Internationale (FDI) Two-Digit system. Histories of all tooth-numbering methods were traced and the strengths and deficiencies of each system were reviewed. The FDI Two-Digit system is widely used throughout the world, except USA, and is

Comprehensive therapy of a fusion between a mandibular lateral incisor and supernumerary tooth: case report.

The term fusion is used to define a developmental anomaly characterised by the union of two adjacent teeth. In the case reported here, clinical and radiographic examinations suggested a unilateral fusion between the mandibular left permanent incisor and a super-numerary tooth. Radiographs showed that the fused teeth had two distinct pulp chambers and canals. A diagnosis of chronic periapical abscess of the supernumerary tooth was made. Before root canal therapy, a periodontal surgical procedure was performed to section the central incisor and its fused supernumerary. Also, odontoplasty was per

Bilateral maxillary fourth molars and a supernumerary tooth in maxillary canine region--a case report.

The occurrence of supernumerary teeth is a relatively uncommon dental anomaly. The aetiology is not clear. Supernumerary teeth have frequently been observed as solitary teeth and impacted in the maxillary arch. This case report describes the rare presence of bilateral maxillary fourth molars and a supernumerary tooth in the maxillary canine region. On the left side, the third molar was extracted first, allowing the fourth molar to move into a more favourable position for later extraction. Two-year postoperative radiography confirmed that the supernumerary tooth had migrated occlusally and mesi

CBCT-Assisted Clinic and Radiographic Diagnosis of an Atypically Erupted Odontoma Associated With Supernumerary Tooth.

Odontomas are common benign odontogenic tumors and are typically asymptomatic, often detected incidentally through imaging exams. However, in some instances, these lesions may erupt into the oral cavity and coexist with supernumerary teeth, creating diagnostic and therapeutic challenges and interfering with normal tooth eruption. This case reports an unusual and complex presentation of an odontogenic lesion with clinic and radiographic features consistent with a partially erupted compound odontoma, associated with a supernumerary tooth and an embedded permanent lateral incisor. A 28-year-old f

Complications associated with the surgical removal of non-syndromic supernumerary premolar tooth buds in the mandible.

Hyperdontia involving the premolar teeth can be single or multiple or even related to a syndrome. These are frequently encountered in permanent dentition, but their occurrence has ranged between 0.09 and 0.64% in the general population. These are commonly found between the permanent canines and first premolars but rarely between the first and second premolars. These are usually eumorphic and can be easily identified as they follow the conventional tooth morphology. These are usually asymptomatic and not easily palpable unless they are very close to eruption. A lingual approach is preferred dur

Combined Surgical Removal of a Supernumerary Tooth and Orthodontic Traction of an Impacted Maxillary Central Incisor.

Impaction of permanent maxillary central incisors is a rare condition that can affect esthetics and oral function. The etiology of impaction is multifactorial and may be related to embryologic reasons, hereditary factors, mechanical obstacles, and pathologic elements, such as the presence of supernumerary teeth. The purpose of this report is to discuss the case of a 10-year-old patient who presented an impacted permanent maxillary right central incisor due to a supernumerary tooth. Surgical removal of the supernumerary tooth and orthodontic traction of the impacted central incisor by the close

Integrating image processing and deep learning framework for automatic supernumerary tooth detection on occlusal radiographs.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Supernumerary tooth is the most common form of hyperdontia in children and is typically identified through radiographic examination. Although occlusal radiographs are recommended for assessing anterior abnormalities, anatomical superimposition and variability in pediatric imaging make early detection challenging, thereby increasing diagnostic inconsistency. Artificial intelligence has shown strong potential in dental imaging, but applications involving pediatric occlusal radiographs remain limited due to low clinical utilization and insufficient datasets. Therefore, a relia

Correction of Supernumerary Tooth-Associated Anterior Crossbite in Mixed Dentition Using a 2 × 4 Appliance.

Anterior crossbite is a common tooth alignment discrepancy seen among the paediatric population especially during the mixed dentition stage. There are many causes of anterior crossbite, and the presence of supernumerary tooth/teeth is one of them. Early interceptive intervention is essential to avoid the need for more complex orthodontic treatment later. This case report describes the management of a 10-year-old child who presented with anterior crossbite involving Teeth 21 and 31, leading to gingival recession of Tooth 31. The crossbite malocclusion was associated with a supernumerary tooth i

A supernumerary tooth in a 1.7 million-year-old Australopithecus robustus from Swartkrans, South Africa.

The maxillary dental arch of a partial cranium of an adult specimen of Australopithecus robustus shows the presence of a supernumerary tooth between the right first and second incisors. The fossil specimen, SK 83, is from Swartkrans Member 1 sediments, considered, on the basis of associated fauna, to be approximately 1.7 million yr old. The specimen was analyzed macroscopically, stereomacroscopically and by X-ray computed tomography. The anatomic position and the morphology of the tooth are consistent with a diagnosis of supernumerary lateral incisor rather than a mesiodens or a retained decid
