Relationship between mandibular fracture and impacted lower third molar.

UNLABELLED: Many studies have shown that the greatest risk of fracture of the mandibular angle is related to the presence of an unerupted lower third molar, based on the hypothesis that there is a decrease in the area of bone and absorption of the impact in this area, leading some surgeons to indicate its prophylactic removal in patients most exposed to the risk factors of facial trauma. On the other hand, other authors have observed a greater frequency of condylar fractures in patients without an impacted lower third molar. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to relate the condylar and angle

Pulp stones in unerupted teeth: a retrospective analysis using cone-beam computed tomography.

BACKGROUND: A pulp stone is a calcified mass that develops in the dental pulp of any tooth. Despite many studies examining the relationship between pulp stone formation and non-oral factors, the methods used in these studies have been unable to explain the exact role of these factors alone as distinct from probable effects within the oral cavity environment. Considering that totally unerupted (impacted or developing) teeth are unexposed to the oral cavity's environmental and functional conditions, they provide a more suitable material for studying the effects of these non-oral factors on pulp

Prediction of maxillary canine impaction using sectors and angular measurement.

Maxillary canine impaction has an incidence of 1 in 100 in the general population and has been reported as much higher in an individual orthodontic practice. Because patients with canine impactions generally have longer treatment times, depending on the location of the impacted tooth, early identification of impaction is of critical interest to the orthodontist. Sector location and angulation of the unerupted tooth have been analyzed previously as predictors of canine eruption after deciduous extraction. Additionally, sector location has been studied as an indicator of eventual impaction, resu

An unusual lateral incisor.

The conditions of hypodontia, hyperodontia and connation (fusion or gemination) have been outlined. A case has been reported in which there has been failure of development of a normal maxillary lateral incisor on one side, with an unerupted tooth in this region which exhibited characteristics of a supernumerary tooth; a diagnosis of hypo-hyperodontia is suggested. This has occurred in a patient in whom the deciduous incisors in the same quadrant were connate.

Metastatic breast carcinoma discovered in a dentigerous cyst - a case report.

This paper reports a patient with a history of breast cancer, who presented with altered sensation to the right lower lip and chin. An orthopantomogram showed a probable dentigerous cyst associated with an unerupted lower wisdom tooth, which was closely related to the inferior dental canal. The tooth and cyst were enucleated under general anaesthesia. The subsequent histopathology report concluded that the cyst contained metastatic adenocarcinoma from a primary breast tumour.

A novel aesthetic technique for alignment of an impacted anterior tooth: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Impacted anterior teeth are common, with sequalae including root resorption of adjacent or nearby teeth. Management depends on patient- and tooth-specific factors; however, in cases of severe resorption, elective tooth loss may be favoured. This case discusses an aesthetic solution to disimpaction of an anterior tooth, involving multidisciplinary input. PATIENT CONCERNS: A girl aged 13 years 10 months presented to an orthodontic department, complaining of missing teeth and poor dental aesthetics. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Class II division 1 incisor relationship on a Class I skeletal

Comparison between the dimensions of lateral incisor crowns adjacent to unerupted palatally displaced and nondisplaced canine.

AIM: To compare the dimensions of lateral incisor crowns adjacent to unerupted palatally displaced and nondisplaced permanent maxillary canines. METHODS: The sample consisted of 36 children between 10 and 12 years of age with unerupted maxillary canines. Each presented with a unilaterally palatally displaced (with respect to the lateral incisor) canine. The lateral incisor next to the palatally displaced canine was considered the experimental tooth; the tooth on the contralateral side was considered the control tooth. Measurements were crown width (mesiodistal), thickness (labiopalatal), tape

Guiding unerupted teeth into occlusion: case report.

Delayed eruption of a permanent tooth may be a significant concern for children in the mixed dentition stage and their parents. This report describes the orthodontic management of a case in which an unerupted tooth was guided into occlusion during the mixed dentition stage, rather than waiting until the permanent dentition stage to perform comprehensive treatment. The article includes a description of the treatment mechanics for this process, which can be readily accomplished by general dentists.

Inflammatory dentigerous cyst of mandibular first premolar associated with endodontically treated primary first molar: a rare case report.

AIM: Inflammatory dentigerous cysts usually occur in the mixed dentition. It has been reported that inflammatory lesions from the root area of a deciduous tooth bring about the development of dentigerous cysts around the unerupted permanent tooth bud. Endodontic treatment is a common and successful procedure for periapical inflammation in children. An inflammatory dentigerous cyst can occur in conjunction with endodontically treated primary tooth. CASE REPORT: This article reports a case of 6 years and 6 months old boy, with a single, well-defined, unilocular, radiolucent area enclosing the f

Idiopathic failure of eruption of permanent molar teeth.

Failure of permanent teeth to erupt without any known cause is a seldom occurring phenomenon. However, it brings to light our ignorance of the basic physiologic mechanism of tooth eruption. In this article we present five patients with unerupted permanent molar teeth. In all instances, no obvious cause exists. Indications for operative intervention and management are discussed, but the cases are also presented to focus attention on our lack of knowledge of the physiology of tooth eruption.

Severe impaction of the primary mandibular second molar accompanied by displacement of the permanent second premolar.

Tooth impaction is defined as any tooth that fails to erupt into a normal functional position and remains unerupted beyond the time at which it should normally erupt. Reports of impaction and eruption failure in primary teeth are relatively rare compared to permanent teeth. We report 2 rare cases where the second premolar was located on the occlusal side of the impacted mandibular second primary molar. In the first case, the succedaneous permanent tooth erupted after extraction of the primary tooth, fenestration, and traction. In the second case, the succedaneous permanent tooth erupted withou

Reproducibility and accuracy of measuring unerupted teeth using limited cone beam X-ray CT.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this investigation was to determine the reproducibility among observers and accuracy of the measurement of the tooth crown width of unerupted teeth using limited area cone beam X-ray CT. METHODS: 3DX multi-image micro-CT (3DX, Morita Co., Kyoto, Japan) images of impacted supernumerary teeth in the median maxillary region taken prior to extraction were used for the samples. The width of the tooth on the 3DX image was measured five times by five individual observers. Significant differences in values among the observers in the measurement were determined by one-way ana

Global prevalence of pre eruptive intracoronal resorption (PEIR) of teeth: a systematic review of literature.

AIM: Pre-eruptive intracoronal resorption (PIER) defects constitute an important part of anomalies associated with unerupted teeth. However, these defects are usually overlooked by clinicians whilst interpreting radiographs. This systematic review was thus orchestrated to find the global prevalence of PEIR. METHODOLOGY: A comprehensive database search was done until December 2022 for published articles on the prevalence of pre-eruptive intracoronal resorption following preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses guidelines. The review was registered in Prospero (CRD4202

Third molar autotransplant planning with a tooth replica. A year of follow-up case report.

The advantages of dental autotransplantation and its high level of clinical success mean that it should be considered as a therapeutic option when replacing a lost tooth. In order to achieve optimum results, it is necessary to know the technique of dental autotransplantation, promoting its use whenever the clinical conditions to perform it are present. The objective of this article is to describe the technique in detail by means of a clinical case of a dental autotransplant whose donor tooth was a third unerupted molar. A 39-year-old male patient with no medical history of interest. On clinica

External resorption presenting as an intracoronal radiolucent lesion in a pre-eruptive tooth.

A large intracoronal radiolucent lesion in an unerupted permanent molar was found during the routine assessment of a young male Caucasian prior to orthodontic treatment. The tooth was extracted. Histological examination indicated the lesion was caused by external resorption. The defect extended widely into the enamel and dentine, and was repaired in part by bone. The pulp chamber was not involved. The aetiology of these lesions is often obscure but in this case it appeared to have originated in the floor of two developmental pits on the occlusal surface of the tooth.

Distal Migration and Ectopic Eruption of the Mandibular First Premolar: Case Report.

Migration describes the movement of an unerupted tooth within the bone when normal eruption is prevented and the tooth leaves its normal site of development. This report describes a case of distal migration and ectopic eruption of the mandibular first premolar in an 8.5-year-old boy. Following early extraction of the primary second molar, the first premolar migrated distally through the extraction site of the primary second molar and erupted into occlusion just mesial of the permanent first molar.
