Do submerged roots hinder orthodontic treatment or the use of implants?

INTRODUCTION: In clinical practice, submerged roots are found with high frequency, and their presence can change the planning of dental movements and implant placement. OBJECTIVES: To provide explanations of possible developments in the area involved, according to the evolutionary stage of the process, at the time of diagnosis. DISCUSSION: After atrophy of the periodontal ligament and epithelial remnants of Malassez, ankylosis of the bone with the submerged root occurs, and initiates a process of replacement resorption. Until this process reaches the most advanced stage, this area represents

Consequences of tooth luxation associated with complicated crown fracture: a case report.

The objective of this clinical case report is to describe the late treatment performed in a 10-year-old patient who suffered a complicated crown fracture associated with luxation of the maxillary left central incisor. The patient-s parents reported that the patient fell and was immediately taken to a hospital, where radiographs, splinting, and suturing were performed and an anti-inflammatory prescription was provided, but no treatment was given for the exposed pulp. The parents and patient sought treatment at a pediatric dentistry clinic 16 days post-trauma. The clinical examination revealed t

Intentional replantation and management of avulsion related ankylosis and external cervical resorption. A 10-year follow up case report.

Replantation is the treatment of choice for avulsed permanent teeth; ankylosis and cervical root resorption are among survival complications. A 9.5-year-old boy presented with an avulsed maxillary permanent central incisor with an open root apex following a school accident. The tooth was kept in milk, after a dry time of 15-20 min. Its replantation was performed 60 min after the accident. At 8 months, apexification with apical plug was attempted upon radiographic evidence of apical periodontitis. Ankylosis sound with infraocclusion and radiographic evidence of external cervical root resorption

[Autografts and tooth transplants. Operative indications].

In order to evaluate the prognosis in tooth transplant procedure the literature on this subject was reviewed. The survival of the periodontal ligament is necessary to prevent ankylosis and root resorption. In order to obtain optimal clinical results, the following guidelines are proposed: preparation of the recipient site 2 weeks prior to graft placement, preservation of intact Pdl at time of extraction, rapid reimplantation of tooth in new socket, short term contention (2-3 weeks); endodontic therapy 8-10 weeks after tooth transplantation.

Is infraocclusion always caused by ankylosis? Current perspectives on primary molar ankylosis: A systematic review.

Ankylosed primary molars are relatively common during the mixed dentition period; however, ankylosis does not always coincide with infraocclusion. This systematic review assessed the clinical evidence regarding ankylosis of primary molars, including its etiology, diagnosis, and management, and discussed whether infraocclusion is primarily caused by ankylosis or instead reflects a broader disturbance of tooth eruption. A literature search was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines across three databases (PubMed, Scopus, and

Ankylosis of traumatized permanent incisors: pathogenesis and current approaches to diagnosis and management.

Ankylosis is a known complication of replanted or severely intruded permanent incisors and can be diagnosed by the characteristic sound emitted when the tooth is tapped. The ankylosed incisor demonstrates a lack of physiologic mobility and, later, radiographic evidence of replacement resorption. If the patient is pre-adolescent or adolescent at the time of trauma, infraocclusion relative to adjacent teeth will become apparent during jaw growth. Despite considerable knowledge about the pathogenesis of ankylosis garnered from animal studies and observation of human replanted teeth, there is no k

Use of the piezosurgery technique for cutting bones in the autotransplantation of unerupted third molars.

Autotransplantation is a well-known method used in oral surgery. However, risk of failure, most commonly resulting from root resorption of the transplanted tooth or ankylosis, is quite high. Piezosurgery with specific device tip vibration frequencies enables selective tissue cutting, and therefore, tooth buds or teeth can easily be removed from bones with little injury to periodontal fibers or bud follicles.

Tooth Resorption - Part 1: The evolvement, rationales and controversies of tooth resorption.

In 1966, Andreasen and Hjørting-Hansen were the first to describe a relationship between tooth resorption and dental trauma. However, Andreasen's original classification did not include other resorptive processes which have since been identified. Numerous articles have been published suggesting new terminology and definitions for tooth resorption. A uniform language with universally accepted terminology is crucial to eliminate the multiplicity of terms and definitions which only cause confusion within the profession. An electronic literature search was carried out in the PubMed database using

A successful treatment of vertical root fracture: a case report and 4-year follow-up.

This case report describes a successful treatment of vertically fractured tooth which was reconstructed with a self-etching dual-cured adhesive resin cement and intentionally replanted without using rotation in conjunction with a bio-absorbable barrier membrane. At a follow-up consultation 4 years later, the tooth was asymptomatic, and attachment gain and bone regeneration were observed. In addition, no ankylosis was detected clinically or radiographically.

Flapless Decoronation: A Minimally Invasive Approach.

Traumatic injuries to the permanent dentition are most common in children. In severe dentoalveolar injuries, especially avulsion and intrusion, dentoalveolar ankylosis is a common complication, leading to adverse effects on the developing alveolar bone and interfering with the eruption of the adjacent teeth. The decoronation procedure was suggested in 1984 to reduce these side effects related to ankylosis. The objective of the current publication is to describe a minimally invasive, flapless decoronation procedure aimed to minimize and simplify the surgical procedure of decoronation, and ease

Qualitative and quantitative assessment of infraoccluded deciduous teeth: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Infraocclusion of deciduous teeth is a frequent dental anomaly caused by ankylosis accompanied by local growth disturbance. During puberal growth spurt an increasing progression of infraocclusion is detected. The clinical classification of ankylosed deciduous teeth varies considerably among scientific studies. The aim of this paper is to present an up-to-date overview of the variety of methods. METHODS: The systematic literature search followed the PRISMA guidelines and included the analysis of the following databases and study registries: PubMed (MEDLINE), the Cochrane Library, W

A case report of a vital replanted tooth with unfavourable extra-alveolar condition: a 10-year follow-up.

This case report describes the survival of a maxillary left central incisor after an avulsion injury under unfavourable extra-alveolar condition, when the patient was 9 years old. At subsequent clinical follow-ups, the tooth maintained vitality 10 years after the injury. There was sign of gradual obliteration of the root canal space. Concomitantly, the replanted tooth manifested typical characteristics of ankylosis with minimally detectable resorption complication.

Autogenous Tooth Transplantation of Canines-A Prospective Clinical Study on the Influence of Adjunctive Antibiosis and Patient-Related Risk Factors During Initial Healing.

Objectives: This prospective clinical study investigated the efficacy of adjunctive antibiotic therapy (doxycycline) and the patient's risk factors during initial healing of autogenous canine tooth transplantations. Methods: Sixty-seven patients (ranging from 11 to 37 years of age) treated with tooth transplantations were allocated to three parallel groups based on the tooth's intraoperative extraoral storage time (EST 0-3, 4-6, and 7-15 min) receiving different antibiotic regimens: (1) no antibiotics; (2) intraoperative intravenous (i.v.) single-shot antibiotics; and (3) intraoperative i.v. s

Treatment of replacement resorption by intentional replantation, resection of the ankylosed sites, and Emdogain--results of a 6-year survey.

The present clinical study investigated the outcome of intentional replantation using resection of the ankylosed sites of the root, extraoral endodontic treatment using titanium posts and Emdogain for periodontal healing following trauma-related ankylosis. During an evaluation period of 6 years, 16 ankylosed teeth affected by replacement resorption were treated as described. Evaluation parameters before treatment and during the follow-up period included Periotest scores, percussion sound and periapical radiographs. All findings were compared to those of the adjacent teeth. In a second accident

Long term outcomes of en-block autotransplantation of a tooth.

Repositioning of impacted teeth in the dental arch through en-bloc autotransplantation showed short-term efficacy of 89%. The objective of this study was to evaluate the technique for long-term efficacy. The analysis involved 23 teeth transplanted to the alveolar ridge through harvesting the tooth with the adjacent bone tissue. Development of the root was completed and the apical foramen was closed in all the teeth. The teeth were examined clinically and radiologically (CBCT) and compared to contralateral ones. The obtained data were analysed statistically. The efficacy of the procedure amount

Long-term management of an ankylosed young permanent incisor replanted within 2 h of avulsion: A case report with a 10-year follow-up.

Tooth avulsion is a severe form of luxation injury that involves damage to both the pulp and the periodontal ligament. Avulsed teeth need to be replanted immediately in order to restore esthetics and function. Delayed replantation often results in ankylosis of the tooth which is a common sequela following avulsion injuries. An ankylosed tooth with a necrotic periodontal membrane does not move along with a growing alveolus leading to an arrest in height and width of the alveolar bone causing the tooth to be infraoccluded in a growing individual. This case report describes the multidisciplinary
