Compendium of continuing education in dentistry (Jamesburg, N.J. : 1995)2017eng
For patients with a single discolored tooth who desire to have it lightened, a thorough examination and radiographic analysis need to be performed prior to initiating any bleaching treatment so that the cause of the discoloration can be determined. Underlying pathology, such as internal resorption, is often asymptomatic and difficult to diagnose and if left untreated could result in tooth loss. This article describes a case of a patient with a discolored maxillary central incisor resulting from internal resorption and the subsequent endodontic and bleaching therapy performed to resolve the pat

Eight subjects used a 10 per cent carbamide peroxide (Opalesence) home bleaching system in a mouthguard for 14 nights. Their periodontal health was assessed by measuring gingival crevicular fluid flow with a Periotron 6000, and subjects were given a questionnaire to assess the effects of the bleaching system. There was no significant change in the gingival crevicular fluid flow, recession, bleeding index or plaque index of any patient during the treatment phase. All treated teeth were lightened, and mild transient tooth sensitivity was common to all participants. One subject experienced intern

Internal, or "walking," bleaching has been successfully used in dentistry for many years to reverse stains associated with nonvital teeth. The procedure is predictable for color change but is not without problems. Current research has identified the cause of cervical resorption, which has been associated with internal bleaching. Second-generation esthetic bonding materials theoretically should provide an improved seal at the tooth-restorative interface, but the limited current research does not support this contention. A suggested method for internal bleaching and restoring the access cavity i

Dental stains can be broadly classified as intrinsic or extrinsic. Intrinsic stains are a result of defects in tooth development, fluorosis, or acquired through the use of tetracycline. Extrinsic stains are localized mainly in the pellicle and are generated by the reaction between sugars and amino acids or acquired from the retention of exogenous chromophores in the pellicle. Three clinical methods are currently used for measuring stain removal and tooth whitening in the development of new whitening technologies: Lobene Stain Index, Shade Guide Color Change, and Minolta ChromaMeter. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the presence of external resorption in non-vital teeth submitted to bleaching. The evaluated patients had at least one non-vital tooth, which had been bleached between 1986 and 1996. All teeth were submitted to bleaching with hydrogen peroxide and sodium perborate, as described by Busato et al.5,6. From 193 patients recalled for clinical and radiographic evaluation of bleached teeth, only 43 attended (54 teeth). The average time elapsed after bleaching was 3.5 years. The results revealed that none of the examined teeth had any degree of external cervic

BACKGROUND: Although several studies indicate the harmful effects of bleaching on pulp tissue, the demand for this procedure using high concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (HP) is high.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the influence of bleaching on the pulp tissue.
METHODS: Electronic searches were conducted (PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Cochrane Library and grey literature) until February 2021. Only in vivo studies that evaluated the effects of HP and/or carbamide peroxide (CP) bleaching gels on the inflammatory response in the pulp tissue compared with a non-bleached group were included. AIM: To evaluate the extraradicular peroxide release from sodium percarbonate compared to sodium perborate as an intracoronal bleaching agent.
METHODOLOGY: Sixty mandibular single-rooted premolars with intact CEJ were selected. After root filling, gutta-percha was removed 4 mm apical to CEJ and 2 mm of GIC was condensed over the root filling. Intracoronal bleaching agents were placed into six groups of teeth (n = 10): sodium perborate with distilled water (SPW); sodium percarbonate with distilled water (SPCW); sodium perborate with 30% hydrogen peroxide (SPHP); sodium percarbonate with 30% hy

This article discusses the possible methods available for whitening of a single discolored tooth. Treatment options can vary from restorative procedures such as crowns, veneers, or bonding to more conservative bleaching treatments. The long-term success of the treatment is dictated by proper diagnosis and treatment planning. The cause and severity of the discoloration has to be carefully evaluated when planning for bleaching options. The vitality of the pulp, presence and absence of symptoms, and periapical pathoses usually determine whether an external or internal bleaching approach will be c

Several vital bleaching systems have been introduced in response to the demand in esthetic dentistry. The active agents are commonly hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide used in at-home or in-office techniques. Although generally positive results have been reported concerning the whitening ability of these agents, concerns still remain as to their effects on dental tissues. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the effect of these bleaching agents on the enamel surface morphology. Twelve extracted teeth were used according to three experimental protocols. In experimental protoco

Bleaching is a viable treatment alternative to attempt esthetic improvement of discolored teeth. Natural tooth structure as opposed to a veneer or crown margin is considerably superior in tissue response. Caution has to be exercised in selecting cases and advising patients of the possibilities from bleaching and that bleaching may not be entirely successful or lasting. It still should be considered as a treatment of first choice. If applied properly and in carefully selected cases the results can be very rewarding for the dentist and especially the patient. A knowledge of the agents used and b

Introduction Vital tooth bleaching is a widely accepted minimally invasive treatment for the management of tooth discoloration. However, residual oxygen radicals generated during bleaching adversely affect the polymerization of resin-based restorative materials, resulting in reduced bond strength when adhesive procedures are performed immediately after bleaching. Antioxidant agents have been proposed as a means of neutralizing residual free radicals and restoring bonding effectiveness. Objective The objective of this study is to compare the effects of 6.5% proanthocyanidin, 10% sodium ascorbat

INTRODUCTION: In recent years, tooth whitening has become one of the most popular ways of achieving the original tooth color. The effect of whitening gel can be improved through heat, light or laser. The bond strength between the enamel and the composite can be reduced through bleaching and laser radiation. The purpose of this study is to assess the shear bond strength of resin composite to enamel after a bleaching process using hydrogen peroxide, with and without a laser (970 nm and 445 nm lasers).
METHOD: This study used 51 extracted anterior teeth without caries that were divided into thre

The history of intracoronal bleaching and the development of the walking bleach technique are reviewed. External cervical resorption associated with intracoronal bleaching is a serious sequela that has been reported in the literature. One explanation given for this phenomenon is that it results from an inflammatory process initiated by the presence of bleaching agents in the attachment apparatus. The basis for this conclusion is discussed. A review of published case reports on external cervical resorption associated with intracoronal bleaching revealed that: 100 per cent of the affected teeth
