Ultrastructure of the dental epithelium during enameloid mineralization in a teleost fish, Cichlasoma cyanoguttatum.

Secretory-stage inner dental epithelial cells (IDE) of tooth buds deposited an unmineralized, ectodermally-derived, enameloid collagen matrix. Pharyngeal plates bearing tooth buds were fixed: some were demineralized, others treated with guanidine-EDTA, then fixed and post-fixed in osmium tetroxide with potassium ferricyanide. Thin Epon sections were viewed in a Jeol 100B TEM. Nascent enameloid crystals were orientated parallel to the collagen fibres and attained widths of 200 nm. Enameloid collagen was absent in demineralized mature enameloid. The outer dental epithelial plasma membrane was de

Primary Teeth-Derived Demineralized Dentin Matrix Autograft for Unilateral Maxillary Alveolar Cleft during Mixed Dentition.

This clinical report describes the immediate autograft of primary (milk) teeth-derived demineralized dentin matrix (DDM) granules for a 6-year-old boy with unilateral alveolar cleft. First, four primary teeth were extracted, crushed in an electric mill for 1 min, and the crushed granules were demineralized in 2% HNO3 solution for 20 min. Simultaneously, the nasal mucoperiosteum was pushed upwards above the apices of the permanent central incisor adjacent to the cleft. The nasal and palatal openings were closed by suturing the mucoperiosteum on both sides of the cleft with absorbable threads. T

8DSS-promoted remineralization of demineralized dentin in vitro.

Dentin phosphoprotein (DPP) plays an extremely important role in the biomineralization of human tooth. The repetitive nucleotide sequence of aspartate-serine-serine (DSS) is the fundamental unit within DPP, and peptides containing 8 repeats of DSS (8DSS) have been shown to possess the ability to induce remineralization of the demineralized enamel. In this work, we coated the 8DSS peptide on the completely demineralized dentin to evaluate the effect of 8DSS peptide coating on dentin remineralization. Human dentin samples were demineralized with 37% phosphoric acid for 2 min, and then the 8DSS p

Intentional reim plantation of a tooth with severe periodontal involvement using enamel matrix derivative in combination with guided tissue regeneration and bone grafting: a case report.

This case involved the intentional reimplantation of a tooth with severe periodontal involvement using regenerative therapies. The maxillary left central incisor was intentionally extracted, enamel matrix derivative (EMD) was applied, and the tooth was repositioned accurately. The bone defect was filled with a xenograft and a demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft, and a guided tissue regeneration membrane was adapted over the site. After 5 years, a reduction in probing depth and a gain in clinical attachment were observed. Conventional radiographs and cone-beam computerized tomographs show

Histologic identification of mast cells in human dental pulp.

Previous investigators who attempted to identify mast cells in the dental pulp have used demineralizing or tooth-splitting procedures to obtain their tissue samples. However, Eda and Langeland15 found that the fluorescence of mast cells is destroyed by acid demineralizing agents. On the other hand, tooth splitting may damage the pulp by crushing it with forceps, or cutting and heating it with burs, stones, or discs. In the present study, we used the extirpated pulps from teeth in which endodontic access openings were made by means of high-speed rotary instruments with water spray. Metachromati

Dental enamel: detection of surface changes by ultrasound.

Evidence indicates that the tooth surface differs in structure from the enamel immediately beneath it, and particularly that the enamel rod type structure is minimal in the true natural surface. Furthermore, the rod ends appear to disappear with age after the eruption of the tooth. The thickness of the surface layer may be as much as 25 micrometers. Studies of caries incidence show a peak in the attack curve 2 to 4 years after eruption and a decline thereafter for all teeth. This information indicates that the mechanical structure of the tooth surface should be carefully studied. A highly usef

[Spontaneous dental abscesses in familial hypophosphatemic rickets].

Symptoms of familial hypophosphatemic rickets are growth retardation, the formation of O- or X-legs, pain of the joints, spontaneous dental abscesses, and delayed tooth eruption. The dental symptoms are predominantly attributable to the demineralization of dentin. In absence of adequate preventive measurements, familial hypophosphatemic rickets may lead to spontaneous pulpal necrosis. The prophylactic application of occlusal sealants might be effective in preventing abscess formation.

Deciduous canine and permanent lateral incisor differential root resorption.

When a permanent maxillary canine erupts apical to the permanent lateral incisor and the deciduous canine, resorption typically takes place only on the deciduous canine root. An understanding of this differential resorption could provide insight into the reasons for excessive iatrogenic root resorption during orthodontic tooth movement. The purpose of the present study was to examine the response of roots of permanent lateral incisors and deciduous canines to simulated resorption, and to acid and enzyme attack, reflecting the physiologic environment of an erupting permanent canine. New Classification of Autologous Tooth-Derived Grafting Materials: Fundamental Concepts.

The use of dentin grafts is relatively recent, and their efficacy remains a topic of debate. Various techniques and devices are available for dentin grafting; however, their application has been inconsistent, as each method yields a distinct product with unique biological properties and potential uses. One of the challenges that arises with the introduction of a new biomaterial is the potential confusion between different preparations. Specifically, generalization may significantly impact the understanding of unique qualities and/or potential limitations. The various materials that make up the
