Dissolution of hydroxyapatite from the tooth structure at low pH can lead to the irreversible destruction of enamel and dentin, which if left untreated can result in pain and tooth loss. Hydroxyapatite toothpastes contain hydroxyapatite particles in micro- or nanocrystalline form that have been shown to deposit and restore demineralized enamel surfaces. As such, they are currently being explored as a fluoride-free anti-caries agent. This narrative review article aims to summarize the recent findings of the research investigating the remineralization potential of HAP toothpaste in vitro, in sit

Dental caries is a global oral dilemma leading to demineralization of tooth hard tissues and exposure of dentinal tubules (DTs). Multifunctional restorative strategies, including remineralization, antibacterial properties, and DT occlusion, are urgently needed for dental caries management but remain a significant challenge. Herein, the polyaspartic acid-calcium-lanthanum suspension (5 g L-1-3.06 м-0.34 м) followed by phosphate solution (2.04 м) is adopted to conduct polyelectrolyte-cation complexes pre-precursor process. This strategy, for the first time, successfully induces La-doped intrafib

Enamel, the hardest and most mineralised tissue of the human body, serves as the outer barrier of teeth and protects them from mechanical and chemical damage. Its structural integrity relies on a delicate balance between demineralisation and remineralisation. Disruption of this equilibrium leads to dental caries, one of the most prevalent oral diseases worldwide. Remineralisation strategies, therefore, aim to restore mineral content and reinforce enamel resistance. Reliable characterisation of remineralisation is essential to assess treatment efficacy and guide the design of innovative biomate

Two dentifrices containing 1100 ppm F from sodium fluoride in silica bases were compared to a placebo dentifrice in an in situ remineralization and fluoride uptake study. Fifteen subjects brushed artificially-formed caries lesions in 60 thin enamel sections and 30 enamel blocks with each dentifrice in a double-blind, randomized, cross-over study design. Analysis of the thin sections by quantitative microradiography before and after exposure to toothbrushing showed that the fluoride dentifrices produced 18.3% and 7.1% remineralization whereas use of the placebo resulted in 10.3% demineralizatio

This study was performed in order to report the clinical features of internal resorption cases and evaluate their prognosis after endodontic treatment. Twenty-seven patients with 28 teeth with internal resorption were referred to our clinic and 20 teeth were treated endodontically. Sixteen teeth had non-perforating internal resorption and were treated by conventional root canal therapy. The remaining 4 teeth had perforating internal resorption and were initially treated by remineralization therapy with calcium hydroxide. The teeth treated by conventional root canal therapy showed clinical and

BACKGROUND: Fluoride treatment is one of the most effective dental caries prevention methods. To continuously prevent dental caries, stably immobilizing the fluoride on the tooth enamel is highly desirable. This study aimed to evaluate the remineralization of tooth enamels by one-pot coating using polydopamine and fluoride ions.
METHODS: To prepare the enamel specimens for polydopamine- and fluoride ion-coating, they were treated with polydopamine- and fluoride-containing gels. The enamel specimens were collected from human molars in a blind manner (n = 100) and were randomized into five trea

Dental caries, driven by plaque biofilm, poses a major oral health challenge due to imbalance in mineralization and demineralization. The primary objective in caries management is to maintain biofilm homeostasis while facilitating the repair and regeneration of dental hard tissues, thus restoring both structural integrity and functionality of affected teeth. Though antimicrobial and remineralization approaches haven shown promise, their standalone utilization without concurrent bacterial control or rebalancing lacks an integrated strategy to effectively arrest caries progression. Furthermore,

PURPOSE: To qualitatively explore the effects of prescription-strength topical NaF pastes on patent tubules in a pH cycling model comprising remineralization and demineralization phases.
METHODS: 3 mm diameter dentin cores were extracted from bovine teeth, mounted in acrylic rods, ground and polished, and initially demineralized in 10 mL unstirred 50% citric acid (pH = 1.2) for 2 minutes to remove the smear layer and expose the dentin tubules. 72 acceptable specimens were then divided into six groups (12 per group) and subjected to a two-phase pH cycling study. The six pastes evaluated were a

Biomineralization is a dynamic, complex, lifelong process by which living organisms control precipitations of inorganic nanocrystals within organic matrices to form unique hybrid biological tissues, for example, enamel, dentin, cementum, and bone. Understanding the process of mineral deposition is important for the development of treatments for mineralization-related diseases and also for the innovation and development of scaffolds. This review provides a thorough overview of the up-to-date information on the theories describing the possible mechanisms and the factors implicated as agonists an

The demineralization of tooth enamel caused by acid attack in dental biofilms is a significant challenge in dentistry. While fluoride varnishes are widely used to protect and restore the enamel surface, their actual ability to penetrate and treat the enamel in depth remains poorly understood. This study proposes an innovative in vitro approach to visualize the diffusion of remineralizing agents into enamel depth using by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). Four commercial fluoride varnishes (MI Varnish®, Duraphat®, FluoroCal®, Clinpro Clear Fluoride®) were applied to artificially demine

INTRODUCTION: Dental caries is the most common cause of tooth loss. However, it can be stopped by enhancing remineralization. Fluoride and casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) are among the most important remineralizing agents. Recent studies have used bioactive glass as a remineralizing agent in different forms. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of a composite paste (prepared by mixing urethane polypropylene glycol oligomer with bioactive glass powder for easier application).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Enamel disks were cut out of the buccal surface of extracted soun

The histopathology of active and arrested human root caries was examined in extracted teeth by different optical methods. Significant differences were observed between the mechanisms operating on the various dental structures. Three different patterns of initial cementum and dentin lesions could be distinguished, depending on the severity of the cariogenic attack, the degree of sclerosis of the peripheral dentin, and the presence of calculus. Advanced lesions were characterized by various patterns of demineralization. In particular, a massive lateral spread of bacteria into intertubular dentin

INTRODUCTION: NovaMin is a synthetic mineral compound composed of calcium, sodium, phosphorus, and silica. It releases crystalline hydroxyl-carbonate apatite (HCA), which structurally resembles the minerals naturally found in the teeth. Nano-hydroxyapatite (NHA) is a biocompatible compound with high affinity for tooth enamel. NHA particles morphologically resemble dental enamel apatite crystals. Considering the efficacy of remineralizing agents and the importance of conservative preventive measures, this study aimed to compare the remin-eralizing effects of NovaMin and NHA on caries-like lesio
