Preimplantation filling of tooth socket with beta-tricalcium phosphate/polylactic-polyglycolic acid (beta-TCP/PLGA) root analogue: clinical and histological analysis in a patient.

INTRODUCTION: Bone resorption is a physiological process after tooth extraction. The use of bone substitutes to fill the tooth socket is suggested to prevent bone resorption and establish good bone architecture for implant placement. A pure beta-tricalcium phosphate coated with copolymer (polylactic-polyglycolic acid) as a root analogue, is suitable for filling tooth sockets. CASE REPORT: We presented a patient successfully treated with root analogue after extraction of the right second lower premolar. Three months later, the patient was planned for the placement of six TE ITI dental implants

Effects of the prevention of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw by local administration of a dental pulp stem cell-conditioned medium to the rat tooth extraction socket.

The onset of osteonecrosis of the jaw, which is a side effect of bisphosphonates, often develops after tooth extraction; measures for its prevention have not yet been established. While treatment with systemic administration of bone marrow stem cell-derived conditioned medium for medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) has been reported, its preventive effects have not been clarified yet, and the high degree of invasiveness of bone marrow fluid collection remains an issue. Therefore, we created a rat model of MRONJ using BP zoledronic acid, used a dental pulp stem cell-conditioned

Biocompatibility of Beta-tricalcium phosphate root replicas in porcine tooth extraction sockets - a correlative histological, ultrastructural, and x-ray microanalytical pilot study.

This investigation studies porcine tissue response in tooth extraction sockets treated with root replicas made out of Beta-tricalcium phosphate (Beta-TCP; Beta-Ca(3)(PO(4))(2)) granules, molded and held together by thermal fusion of a thin film of polyglycolic-polylactic acid copolymer. Six left mandibular third incisors (n (1)/4 6) of experimental pigs are treated with the root replicas and four contralateral incisors are used as nontreated controls (n (1)/4 4). Two animals each were killed at 20, 40, and 60 weeks of observation periods. The mandibular jaw segments were prepared in toto for l

Chitosan-CaP microflowers and metronidazole loaded calcium alginate sponges with enhanced antibacterial, hemostatic and osteogenic properties for the prevention of dry socket after tooth removal.

Tooth removal, particularly for patients with severe periodontitis, can frequently cause massive bleeding, postoperative infection, and bone resorption, resulting in a dry socket. Thus, developing bio-multifunctional materials with excellent antibacterial, hemostatic, and osteogenic characteristics for the prevention of dry sockets after tooth removal is highly desirable in clinical applications. Herein, chitosan-CaP microflowers (CM) and metronidazole (MD) loaded calcium alginate (CA) sponges (CA@CM/MD) with enhanced antibacterial, hemostatic, and osteogenic properties were developed via Ca2+

Immediate Tooth Replacement in the Esthetic Zone with the Socket Shield Technique and a Novel Body-Shift Implant: A Pilot Study with Up to 3 Years of Follow-up.

Successful rehabilitation of the anterior maxilla remains a challenge, primarily due to postextraction ridge collapse, which can lead to gingival recession and a nonesthetic appearance. The socket shield technique presents a viable alternative for immediate dental implant placement in the esthetic zone. This pilot study aimed to evaluate the survival, complication rates, and marginal bone loss around body-shift implants placed in fresh extraction sockets with the socket shield technique to replace maxillary incisors. After socket shield preparation, 14 hopeless incisors were extracted and imme

An Expandable Silk Fibroin/Montmorillonite Porous Scaffolds Based on Clinical Dual Hemostasis Concept and Its Application in Bone Regeneration of Tooth Extraction Sockets with Coagulation Disorders.

With the global aging population and the rising incidence of cardiovascular diseases, the demand for long-term anticoagulant medication is increasing, leading to a higher risk of bleeding in medical fields such as oral surgery, particularly during tooth extractions. To address this clinical need, a convenient one-step method is developed to fabricate expandable silk fibroin/montmorillonite (SF/MMT) porous scaffolds by leveraging the procoagulant and osteogenic differentiation-promoting effects of montmorillonite (MMT), along with the biocompatibility of silk fibroin. The resulting SF/MMT porou

The potential of mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) peel extract, combined with demineralized freeze-dried bovine bone xenograft, to reduce ridge resorption and alveolar bone regeneration in preserving the tooth extraction socket.

BACKGROUND: Following the extraction of a tooth, bone resorption can cause significant problems for a subsequent denture implant and restorative dentistry. Thus, the tooth extraction socket needs to be maintained to reduce the chance of any alveolar ridge bone resorption. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to determine whether the administration of mangosteen peel extracts (MPEs), combined with demineralized freeze-dried bovine bone xenograft (DFBBX) materials for tooth extraction socket preservation, could potentially reduce inflammation by decreased the expression of nuclear factor κ

Complication Management of a Socket Shield Case After 6 Years of Function.

Maintaining soft and hard tissues around dental implants after tooth extraction is one of the major challenges in implant dentistry. After tooth extraction, the subsequent loss of bone and soft tissue is inevitable due to the partial resorption of the buccal bone plate. The recently described socket shield technique addresses the problem by maintaining the buccal piece of the tooth in the extraction socket in order to preserve the buccal bone. As with every new technique, specific complications, like infection of the buccal piece of the tooth, can occur. Herein, the authors present a clinical

Conservative Socket Regeneration with Buccal Wall Defect Using Guided Tissue.

Progressive alveolar bone resorption after tooth extraction may lead to surgical and prosthetic-driven difficulties, especially when deciding to use a dental implant to replace the extracted tooth. This case report discusses an irreparable lower left second premolar tooth with a periodontal lesion on the buccal side. A preservative tooth extraction was performed. Then, the socket was grafted with bovine bone, a collagen membrane was placed between the buccal bone and the attached gingiva, covering the bone dehiscence buccally, and the socket without a flap was raised. After a 6-month healing p

The role of the combination of Moringa oleifera leaf extract and demineralized freeze-dried bovine bone xenograft (xenograft) as tooth extraction socket preservation materials on osteocalcin and transforming growth factor-beta 1 expressions in alveolar bone of Cavia cobaya.

AIM: Alveolar bone resorption, often occurring after tooth extraction, can be minimized through socket preservation. This process uses a combination of Moringa leaf extract and demineralized freeze-dried bovine bone xenograft (DFDBBX) that is expected to generate both transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1) expressions as a transcription factor associated with osteoblast differentiation and osteocalcin accelerating alveolar bone formation. This research aimed to analyze the role of the combination of Moringa leaf extract and DFDBBX induced in socket preservation when generating TGF-β1 and o

Autotransplantation of a Third Molar to Replace Compromised Molar With the Individual Three-Dimensional Printed Ultrasonic Osteotome: A Case Report.

Tooth autotransplantation is widely used to replace congenitally missing teeth or teeth with irreversible damage. This case report presents a personalized ultrasonic osteotome that enables precise preparation, minimizes bone trauma, enhances the initial stability of the transplanted tooth, and contributes to a favorable prognosis. The procedure is as follows: a 25-year-old female patient presented with a porcelain-fused-to-metal crown on Tooth #19, which had detached due to severe decay, rendering the tooth unsalvageable. Tooth #32 exhibited mesial inclination, resulting in decay of Tooth #31.

Comparative evaluation of the pontic shield technique versus whole tooth extraction on labial crestal bone resorption using cone-beam computed tomography in the maxillary anterior region: A randomized controlled clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: Following tooth extraction, there is comparatively more bone loss at the buccal aspect at 3 months of healing, which may result in 56% bone loss due to resorption of the bucco-facial ridge contour. In the socket shield technique, a tooth is planned for extraction in such a way that the tooth is sectioned in two halves, a palatal section is removed and the facial part is retained. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-six sites, i.e., 13 sites requiring partial tooth extraction (test sites) and 13 sites with whole tooth extraction (control sites), in the maxillary anterior region were in

Smoking as a Risk Factor for Dry Socket: A Systematic Review.

Dry socket is one of the postoperative complications of tooth extraction. It is the partial or total loss of the post-extraction blood clot, resulting in severe pain that usually starts one to five days postoperatively, with clinical evidence of exposed alveolar bone, necrotic debris, halitosis, and tenderness on examination. The purpose of our systematic review was to answer the question "Is there a relationship between smoking and dry socket?". After meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria, eleven studies were included in this systematic review (according to the PRISMA statement guideli
