Quantifying anti-gravity torques for the design of a powered exoskeleton.

Designing an upper extremity exoskeleton for people with arm weakness requires knowledge of the joint torques due to gravity and joint stiffness, as well as, active residual force capabilities of users. The objective of this research paper is to describe the characteristics of the upper limb of children with upper limb impairment. This paper describes the experimental measurements of the torque on the upper limb due to gravity and joint stiffness of three groups of subjects: able-bodied adults, able-bodied children, and children with neuromuscular disabilities. The experiment involves moving t

Picosecond switching of magnetic tunnel junctions by spin-orbit torque.

Ultrafast switching of magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) is essential for future high-bandwidth memory and in-memory computing. However, state-of-the-art electrical switching of MTJs remains constrained to hundreds of picoseconds, leaving a substantial gap between memory and processors. Here, we experimentally demonstrate field-free switching of three-terminal MTJs using picosecond electrical pulses driven by spin-orbit torque (SOT), surpassing the speed limit by an order of magnitude. We further use voltage-gated (VG) effect to probe SOT switching mechanisms over wide pulse-width ranges and id

Giant orbital torque-driven picosecond switching in magnetic tunnel junctions.

Orbital effects and orbital torque (OT) were recently discovered as a novel pathway for driving the magnetic moment. However, the development of OT-based magnetic memories suffers from low orbital-to-spin conversion efficiency and incompatibility with magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs). Here we demonstrate OT-MTJ devices based on Ru/W bilayer, achieving an effective spin-orbit Hall conductivity of -12,600 ħ/2e Ω-1 cm-1. The giant orbital torque originates from the strong orbital effects in the Ru layer and an orbital-to-spin conversion efficiency exceeding 90% in the α-W layer because of the lar

Torque teno virus is predictive for malignancies after kidney transplantation.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Malignancy, driven by the effects of immunosuppression, is a major complication following kidney transplantation. The widespread and non-pathogenic TT virus (TTV) has emerged as a surrogate of the immune status of its host, with prior studies linking TTV load to insufficient and excessive immunosuppression and thus indirectly to graft rejection and infection. Its relationship to malignancy in kidney transplant recipients is unknown. METHODS: This prospective observational single center study evaluated 428 patients who underwent kidney transplantation between 2016 an

Nanometer-thick Si/Al gradient materials for spin torque generation.

Green materials for efficient charge-to-spin conversion are desired for common spintronic applications. Recent studies have documented the efficient generation of spin torque using spin-orbit interactions (SOIs); however, SOI use relies on the employment of rare metals such as platinum. Here, we demonstrate that a nanometer-thick gradient from silicon to aluminum, which consists of readily available elements from earth resources, can produce a spin torque as large as that of platinum despite the weak SOI of these compositions. The spin torque efficiency can be improved by decreasing the thickn

Giant Response and Harmonic Generation in Néel-Torque Antiferromagnetic Resonance.

We theoretically investigate the resonant and higher order magnetic responses of a collinear antiferromagnet induced by Néel spin-orbit torques (NSOTs). By deriving the dynamical susceptibilities up to the third harmonic, we find remarkable NSOT-induced amplifications of the linear and nonlinear magnetic dynamics by orders of magnitude compared to conventional spin-orbit torques, enabling highly efficient frequency conversion in the terahertz frequency range. From the effective dynamics, we uncover the strong coupling between the Néel vector and the driving field of NSOTs, providing a physical

Heat-Assisted Magnetization Switching in Flexible Spin-Orbit Torque Devices.

Heat-assisted magnetic anisotropy engineering has been successfully used in selective magnetic writing and microwave amplification due to a large interfacial thermal resistance between the MgO barrier and the adjacent ferromagnetic layers. However, in spin-orbit torque devices, the writing current does not flow through the tunnel barrier, resulting in a negligible heating effect due to efficient heat dissipation. Here, we report a dramatically reduced switching current density of ∼2.59 MA/cm2 in flexible spin-orbit torque heterostructures, indicating a 98% decrease in writing energy consumptio

Spin-Orbit Torque Vector Quantification in Nanoscale Magnetic Tunnel Junctions.

Spin-orbit torques (SOT) allow ultrafast, energy-efficient toggling of magnetization state by an in-plane charge current for applications such as magnetic random-access memory (SOT-MRAM). Tailoring the SOT vector comprising of antidamping (TAD) and fieldlike (TFL) torques could lead to faster, more reliable, and low-power SOT-MRAM. Here, we establish a method to quantify the longitudinal (TAD) and transverse (TFL) components of the SOT vector and its efficiency χAD and χFL, respectively, in nanoscale three-terminal SOT magnetic tunnel junctions (SOT-MTJ). Modulation of nucleation or switching

Spin-Orbit Torque in Single-Molecule Junctions from ab Initio.

The use of electric fields applied across magnetic heterojunctions that lack spatial inversion symmetry has been previously proposed as a nonmagnetic means of controlling localized magnetic moments through spin-orbit torques (SOT). The implementation of this concept at the single-molecule level has remained a challenge, however. Here, we present first-principles calculations of SOT in a single-molecule junction under bias and beyond linear response. Employing a self-consistency scheme invoking density functional theory and nonequilibrium Green's function theory including spin-orbit interaction

Moiré Engineering of Spin-Orbit Torque by Twisted WS2 Homobilayers.

Artificial moiré superlattices created by stacking 2D crystals have emerged as a powerful platform with unprecedented material-engineering capabilities. While moiré superlattices are reported to host a number of novel quantum states, their potential for spintronic applications remains largely unexplored. Here, the effective manipulation of spin-orbit torque (SOT) is demonstrated using moiré superlattices in ferromagnetic devices comprised of twisted WS2/WS2 homobilayer (t-WS2) and CoFe/Pt thin films by altering twisting angle (θ) and gate voltage. Notably, a substantial enhancement of up to 44

Non-relativistic torque and Edelstein effect in non-collinear magnets.

The Edelstein effect is the origin of the spin-orbit torque: a current-induced torque that is used for the electrical control of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic materials. This effect originates from the relativistic spin-orbit coupling, which necessitates utilizing materials with heavy elements. Here, we show that in magnetic materials with non-collinear magnetic order, the Edelstein effect and, consequently, a current-induced torque can exist even in the absence of the spin-orbit coupling. Using group symmetry analysis, model calculations, and realistic simulations on selected compounds,

Antiferromagnetic spin-torque diode effect in a kagome Weyl semimetal.

Spintronics based on ferromagnets has enabled the development of microwave oscillators and diodes. To achieve even faster operation, antiferromagnets hold great promise despite their challenging manipulation. So far, controlling antiferromagnetic order with microwave currents remains elusive. Here we induce the coherent rotation of antiferromagnetic spins in a Weyl antiferromagnet W/Mn3Sn epitaxial bilayer by DC spin-orbit torque. We show the efficient coupling of this spin rotation with microwave current. The coupled dynamics produce a DC anomalous Hall voltage through rectification, which we

Voltage-Controlled Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction Torque Switching of Perpendicular Magnetization.

Magnetization switching is the most important operation in spintronic devices. In modern nonvolatile magnetic random-access memory (MRAM), it is usually realized by spin-transfer torque (STT) or spin-orbit torque (SOT). However, both STT and SOT MRAM require current to drive magnetization switching, which will cause Joule heating. Here, we report an alternative mechanism, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) torque, that can realize magnetization switching fully controlled by voltage pulses. We find that a consequential voltage-controlled reversal of DMI chirality in multiferroics can lead

Modeling Ankle Torque and Stiffness Induced by Functional Electrical Stimulation.

Functional electrical stimulation (FES) is commonly used for individuals with neuromuscular impairments to generate muscle contractions. Both joint torque and stiffness play important roles in maintaining stable posture and resisting external disturbance. However, most previous studies only focused on the modulation of joint torque using FES while ignoring the joint stiffness. A model that can simultaneously modulate both ankle torque and stiffness induced by FES was investigated in this study. This model was composed of four subparts including an FES-to-activation model, a musculoskeletal geo

Compact Series Visco-Elastic Joint (SVEJ) for Smooth Torque Control.

The design and control of a new series-viscous-elastic joint are presented. The proposed joint consists of 3D printed parts compressing nonlinear elastic silicone springs. The use of silicone springs is the main novelty of the system; they exhibit internal damping, which enhances system performance allowing a simpler and more stable control. Their stiffness allows the system to bear a torque of about 4.5 Nm at a deformation angle of about 20 degrees. In this article, the system is modeled using the Neo-Hookean material model and then characterized through experiments to build the joint torque
