[Combined touching and palpation in parathyroid surgery].

The parathyroid glands may be located anywhere and hidden in the thick thyroid gland sheath, so that the duration of parathyroidectomy is impossible to predict. For accurate and rapid identification and assessment of the nodule to be dissected, the authors advocate a two-finger method: one index finger palpates the whole length of the posteromedial segment of the thyroid sheath, while the other index finger penetrates into the thyroid cavity. Fourteen parathyroid adenomas and 39/40 hypertrophied glands were detected by this method. Results were negative in 12 cases with unconfirmed biological

Touch in the counselling relationship: an exploratory study.

There is a continuum of views on the extent to which touch enhances the treatment process of patients. Health professionals must deal with the use of touch in some way, even if their final decision is not to use it. Health professionals were interviewed about personal touch as a part of their professional relationships with patients. Even though the subjects using touch differed in health professions and primary theoretical orientations, a commonality was the belief in a strong person-to-person relationship as an integral part of the helping process. Instruction concerning touch appears to be

Stop touching your face! A systematic review of triggers, characteristics, regulatory functions and neuro-physiology of facial self touch.

Spontaneous face touching (sFST) is an ubiquitous behavior that occurs in people of all ages and all sexes, up to 800 times a day. Despite their high frequency, they have rarely been considered as an independent phenomenon. Recently, sFST have sparked scientific interest since they contribute to self-infection with pathogens. This raises questions about trigger mechanisms and functions of sFST and whether they can be prevented. This systematic comprehensive review compiles relevant evidence on these issues. Facial self-touches seem to increase in frequency and duration in socially, emotionally

Comparison of the diagnostic value of virtual touch tissue quantification and virtual touch tissue imaging quantification in infants with biliary atresia.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the diagnostic performance of vital touch tissue quantification (VTQ) and virtual touch tissue imaging quantification (VTIQ) in diagnosing infants with biliary atresia (BA) from jaundiced infants. METHODS: In this study, 26 jaundiced infants with BA, 33 jaundiced infants without BA, and 40 normal infants were enrolled. The hepatic shear wave velocity (SWV) of each infant was determined by VTQ and VTIQ examinations, respectively. Then, the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were drawn and the area under the curve (AUC) and optimal cut-off valu

Vision Fine-Tunes Predictions of Bimanual Self-Touch.

Self-touch is attenuated compared to external touch due to internal forward models predicting the somatosensory consequences of our movements. These self-touch predictions are continuously updated during the movement using the available sensory input, resulting in a precise temporal tuning of somatosensory perception. However, the contributions of different sensory inputs, such as vision, to the predictions of the forward models and thus the resulting modulation of somatosensory perception remain unknown. In this pre-registered study, participants discriminated forces applied to their left ind

Computer-simulated TOUCH prosthesis cup malposition and solutions.

INTRODUCTION: Total joint replacement has become significantly more common as a treatment for advanced trapeziometacarpal joint osteoarthritis in recent years. The latest generation of prostheses with dual-mobility designs leads to very good functional results and low rates of loosening and dislocation in the short and medium term. Biomechanical studies showed that central placement and parallel alignment of the cup with respect to the proximal articular surface of the trapezium are crucial for both cup stability and prevention of dislocation. Despite correct positioning of the guidewire, inco

Unilateral Brachial Plexus Lesion Impairs Bilateral Touch Threshold.

Unilateral brachial plexus injury (BPI) impairs sensory and motor functions of the upper limb. This study aimed to map in detail brachial plexus sensory impairment both in the injured and the uninjured upper limb. Touch sensation was measured through Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments at the autonomous regions of the brachial plexus nerves, hereafter called points of exclusive innervation (PEIs). Seventeen BPI patients (31.35 years±6.9 SD) and 14 age-matched healthy controls (27.57 years±5.8 SD) were tested bilaterally at six selected PEIs (axillary, musculocutaneous, median, radial, ulnar, and me

Touch DNA sampling with SceneSafe Fast™ minitapes.

To achieve optimal results in the forensic analysis of trace DNA, choosing the right collection technique is crucial. Three common approaches are currently well-established for DNA retrieval from items of clothing, notably cutting, swabbing and tape-lifting. The latter two are non-destructive and therefore preferable on items of value. Even though the most recently established technique of DNA retrieval by adhesive tapes is widely used since quite some years now, little information has been published so far on how well it performs compared to other methods. Even more important, when it comes t

Sharing social touch in the primary somatosensory cortex.

Touch has an emotional and communicative meaning, and it plays a crucial role in social perception and empathy. The intuitive link between others' somatosensations and our sense of touch becomes ostensible in mirror-touch synesthesia, a condition in which the view of a touch on another person's body elicits conscious tactile sensations on the observer's own body [1]. This peculiar phenomenon may implicate normal social mirror mechanisms [2]. Here, we show that mirror-touch interference effects, synesthesia-like sensations, and even phantom touches can be induced in nonsynesthetes by priming th

Pediatric intervertebral disc calcification: A no touch lesion.

Intervertebral disc calcification (IVDC), though rare, remains an important differential of pediatric spinal pain. A 7-year-old boy presented with sudden-onset severe neck pain and restricted movements. There was no definite history of trauma or infection. Imaging of the cervical spine showed calcification of the intervertebral disc at C2-3 level, with significant posterior protrusion into the spinal canal causing compression of the cervical spinal cord. The child was kept on conservative management. The calcification and posterior protrusion showed near-complete resolution on 3-month follow-u

Getting in touch--3D printing in forensic imaging.

With the increasing use of medical imaging in forensics, as well as the technological advances in rapid prototyping, we suggest combining these techniques to generate displays of forensic findings. We used computed tomography (CT), CT angiography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and surface scanning with photogrammetry in conjunction with segmentation techniques to generate 3D polygon meshes. Based on these data sets, a 3D printer created colored models of the anatomical structures. Using this technique, we could create models of bone fractures, vessels, cardiac infarctions, ruptured organs a

Trust, talk and touch in Balkan folk healing.

Broadly based in long-term anthropological fieldwork in the Balkans (in Serbia, Macedonia and Bulgaria), this discussion of folk healing techniques illustrates how convergence in the patient/practitioner relationship is of prime importance in effecting a positive outcome. Sumadija in central Serbia is selected as an example, and treatment for erysipelas, a common health problem which villagers call 'the red wind', is described and analyzed. Against a sociocultural background in which the collective wisdom of the past is retained and transmitted orally to contemporary healers, especially to the

Touch-Related Electrophysiology Activity Promotes Human Movements Initiation.

Although touch has been shown to improve motor performance, its specific influence on movement initiation and the underlying neurophysiological mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we demonstrate that tactile input robustly enhances movement initiation, although the strength of this facilitation varies across touch types. Using a tactile Go/No-Go Task during different types of touch (i.e., self-touch, object-touch and other-touch), we found that all these types of touch reduced reaction time (RT). To elucidate the neural substrates of this behavior, we employed multimodal neurophysiological assess

A collicular map for touch-guided tongue control.

Accurate goal-directed behaviour requires the sense of touch to be integrated with information about body position and ongoing motion1,2. Behaviours such as chewing, swallowing and speech critically depend on precise tactile events on a rapidly moving tongue3, but neural circuits for dynamic touch-guided tongue control are unknown. Here, using high-speed videography, we examined three-dimensional lingual kinematics as mice drank from a water spout that unexpectedly changed position during licking, requiring re-aiming in response to subtle contact events on the left, centre or right surface of

One-touch embeddable microneedles for hair loss treatment.

With increasing clinical demands for painless and easy administration of medications, such as for hair loss, microneedles (MNs) have been widely exploited for facilitating drug permeation in a minimally invasive manner. However, precise dose control and long-term drug delivery without the infection risk through punctured holes have remained unresolved. Herein, we developed swellable microneedles (MNs) with an air-pocket structure, enabling shear-induced implantation inside the skin. The air-pocket MNs (AP-MNs) were prepared by one-step molding process with genipin-crosslinked gelatin solutions

Reading Braille by Touch Recruits Posterior Parietal Cortex.

Blind readers use a tactile reading system consisting of raised dot arrays: braille/⠃⠗⠇. How do human brains implement reading by touch? The current study looked for signatures of reading-specific orthographic processes in braille, separate from low-level somatosensory responses and semantic processes. Of specific interest were responses in posterior parietal cortices (PPCs), because of their role in high-level tactile perception. Congenitally blind, proficient braille readers read real words and pseudowords by touch while undergoing fMRI. We leveraged the system of contractions in English bra

Get in Touch With Dendritic Epithelial T Cells!

Innate and adaptive immune systems continuously interchange information and orchestrate their immune responses to protect the host. γδT cells play crucial roles, as they incorporate both innate and adaptive immune characteristics. Dendritic epidermal T cells (DETC) are specialized γδT cells, which are uniquely positioned to rapidly respond to skin wounds and infections. Their elongated dendrite morphology allows them to be in continuous contact with multiple neighboring keratinocytes and Langerhans cells. Cellular interactions are fundamental to the formation, activation and maintenance of imm
