Social touch is a critical component of our daily lives, shaping our interactions with friends and loved ones. Reduced social touch, especially during early life, can have detrimental effects on health and well-being. A mechanistic understanding of the neural circuits for social touch is still underway, despite its centrality. To achieve a comprehensive understanding of social touch, a cellular and molecular emphasis must be placed on signaling and connectivity among neurons of the skin, spinal cord, and brain. Here, I review research on the molecules, cells, and circuits of the social touch n

Perception by touch is fundamentally linked to the motor system. A hallmark of this linkage takes the form of stereotyped haptic "exploratory procedures" [1], movement patterns that emerge when people set a perceptual goal such as judging the roughness of a textured surface. This paper expands the study of touch-directed movements by asking what patterns emerge when people encounter and interact with novel objects without explicitly specified goals. Participants were invited to freely interact with an art installation containing novel objects with distinct design features, intended to vary fam

The human body is represented in a topographic pattern in the primary somatosensory cortex (S1), and genital representation is displaced below the toe representation. However, the relationship between the representation of the genitals and toe in S1 remains unclear. In this study, tactile stimulation was applied to the big toe in healthy subjects to observe changes in tactile acuity in the unstimulated genital area, abdomen, and metacarpal dorsal. Then tactile stimulation was applied to the right abdomen and metacarpal dorsal to observe changes in tactile acuity in bilateral genitals. The resu

We demonstrate an artificially-intelligent cornea that can assume the functions of the native human cornea such as protection, tactile perception, and light refraction, and possesses sensory expansion and interactive functions. These functions are realized by an artificial corneal reflex arc that is constructed to implement mechanical and light information coding, information processing, and the regulation of transmitted light. Digitally-aligned, long and continuous zinc tin oxide (ZTO) semiconductor fabric patterns were fabricated as the active channels of the artificial synapse, which are no

Blind readers use a tactile reading system consisting of raised dot arrays: braille/⠃⠗⠇. How do human brains implement reading by touch? The current study looked for signatures of reading-specific orthographic processes in braille, separate from low-level somatosensory responses and semantic processes. Of specific interest were responses in posterior parietal cortices (PPCs), because of their role in high-level tactile perception. Congenitally blind, proficient braille readers read real words and pseudowords by touch while undergoing fMRI. We leveraged the system of contractions in English bra

It is now well-known that a lack of attention can leave people unaware of clearly-noticeable, long-lasting and dynamic stimuli, such as a visible person dressed as a gorilla or an audible person claiming to be a gorilla. However, the question of whether touch can ever be susceptible to such extreme inattentional effects remains open. Here, we present evidence across two experiments that the absence of attention can leave people "numb" to the presence of a tactile stimulus that lasts for 3.5 s and moves across six different skin locations, establishing the new phenomenon of "sustained inattenti

BACKGROUND: The pleasantness of a gentle and slow, namely affective, touch experienced in interpersonal interactions motivates social closeness. In anorexia nervosa (AN), independent evidence suggests lower pleasantness of affective touch, as well as social withdrawal. We aim to probe both the experience of affective touch and its possible association with social anhedonia and lifespan experiences of affective bodily contacts in AN.
METHODS: The pleasantness of affective and non-affective touch was compared between fourteen women with AN and fourteen healthy women. Stimuli were traditionally

With this work, we introduce a novel Android app designed to monitor and enhance auditory and tactile temporal sensitivity. To assess the app's reliability, we tested its technical performance evaluating stimuli production's accuracy (i.e., onset, offset, and duration of stimulation). To validate the app with participants we generated temporal intervals, using either sounds or vibratory stimuli, by implementing two versions of a Two-Alternative Forced-Choice (2AFC) task. Auditory and tactile temporal sensitivity of 12 participants was evaluated using this procedure. To investigate whether temp

People with autism and Asperger syndrome are anecdotally said to be hypersensitive to touch. In two experiments, we measured tactile thresholds and suprathreshold tactile sensitivity in a group of adults with Asperger syndrome. In the first experiment, tactile perceptual thresholds were measured. Two frequencies of vibrotactile stimulation were used: 30 and 200 Hz. The results demonstrated significantly lower tactile perceptual thresholds in the Asperger group at 200 Hz but not at 30 Hz, thus confirming tactile hypersensitivity but only for one class of stimulus. A second experiment investigat

Human tactile perception relies on hierarchical processing, where inputs entering the nervous system are fused by interneurons for sparse multimodal encoding, and the integrated signals are sent to the brain to generate perception. Replicating this pathway from primary sensory inputs to higher-order neural processing, which efficiently transforms signals into coherent representations of the external environment, is essential for artificial tactile systems. Here we present artificial multimodal interneuron (AMINs) by integrating strain, pressure, and temperature sensors with NbOx memristor neur

Social touch interventions have the potential to modulate psychological and physiological stress in intensive care settings. In individuals with disorders of consciousness (DOC), tactile stimulation combined with other sensory modalities, (e.g., visual, auditory, olfactory, gustatory, and proprioceptive), has been proposed to enhance arousal, behavioural responsiveness, and recovery, while mitigating sensory deprivation. However, tactile stimulation encompasses heterogeneous forms of touch and the extent to which clinical benefits can be attributed to specific tactile qualities remains unclear

Individual differences in tactile acuity have been correlated with age, gender and finger size, whereas the role of the skin's stiffness has been underexplored. Using an approach to image the 3-D deformation of the skin surface during contact with transparent elastic objects, we evaluate a cohort of 40 young participants, who present a diverse range of finger size, skin stiffness and fingerprint ridge breadth. The results indicate that skin stiffness generally correlates with finger size, although individuals with relatively softer skin can better discriminate compliant objects. Analysis of co

Touch concerns a fundamental component of sociality. In this review, we examine the hypothesis that somatomotor development constitutes a crucial psychophysiological element in the ontogeny of intersubjectivity. An interdisciplinary perspective is provided on how the communication channel of touch contributes to the sense of self and extends to the social self. During gestation, the transformation of random movements into organized sequences of actions with sensory consequences parallels the development of the brain's functional architecture. Brain subsystems shaped by the coordinated activity

Sensory events appear reduced in intensity when we actively produce them. Here, we investigated sensory attenuation in a virtual reality setup that allowed us to manipulate the time of tactile feedback when pressing a virtual button. We asked whether tactile motor attention might shift to the tactile location that makes contact with the button. In experiment one, we found that a tactile impulse was perceived as more intense when button pressing. In a second experiment, participants pushed a button and estimated the intensity of sounds. We found sensory attenuation for sounds only when tactile

The human brain recruits similar brain regions when a state is experienced (e.g., touch, pain, actions) and when that state is passively observed in other individuals. In adults, seeing other people being touched activates similar brain areas as when we experience touch ourselves. Here we show that already by four months of age, cortical responses to tactile stimulation are modulated by visual information specifying another person being touched. We recorded somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) in 4-month-old infants while they were presented with brief vibrotactile stimuli to the hands. At t

Vision is considered the dominant sense for spatial perception. Yet, how vision contributes to its refinement in other modalities remains unclear. Consequently, we investigated the development of audio-tactile spatial integration using a localization task in which participants had to determine the position of auditory, tactile, and audio-tactile stimuli and the influence of visual experience in this process. We tested sighted and blind children at different ages. We found that in sighted children, tactile spatial perception stabilizes earlier than the auditory one, and optimal audio-tactile in

Social touch plays a fundamental role in bodily self-awareness and emotional regulation. Alterations in how touch is perceived or sought may contribute to disturbances in self-perception, such as those seen in depersonalization. This study examined the relationship between depersonalization symptoms, social touch acceptance and seeking, and self-concept clarity in a non-clinical Argentinian sample (N = 273). Participants completed an online body-mapping task to indicate acceptable touch areas from strangers, friends/family, and intimate partners, along with questionnaires assessing comfort wit

Multisensory information is integral to infants' language experiences and research has suggested that infants can use multisensory cues to support their segmentation of wordforms continuous speech. However, the role of multisensory cues in wordform segmentation compared to that of cues present in the acoustic stream alone (e.g., transitional probability) remains unclear. In the current study, we investigated word segmentation with aligned tactile cues in 8.5-month-old infants to explore how these infants weight tactile cues compared to, as well as in combination with, transitional probability

Stroke often causes long-term motor and somatosensory impairments. Motor planning and tactile perception rely on spatial body representations. However, the link between altered spatial body representations, motor deficit and tactile spatial coding remains unclear. This study investigates the relationship between motor deficits and alterations of anatomical (body) and tactile spatial representations of the hand in 20 post-stroke patients with upper limb hemiparesis. Anatomical and tactile spatial representations were assessed from 10 targets (nails and knuckles) respectively cued verbally by th
