Chronic tic disorders (CTD) are characterized by motor and/or vocal tics. Existing data on the impact of tics in adulthood is limited by small, treatment-seeking samples or by data aggregated across adults and children. The current study explored the functional impact of tics in adults using a nationwide sample of 672 participants with a self-reported CTD. The impact of tics on physical, social, occupational/academic, and psychological functioning was assessed. Results suggested mild to moderate functional impairment and positive correlations between impairment and tic severity. Notable portio

OBJECTIVE: This article describes the clinical features of Tourette syndrome and its diagnostic criteria, etiology, and pathophysiology, as well as common myths associated with tic disorders. It discusses the behavioral, pharmacologic, neuromodulation, and alternative treatment approaches to tic disorders.
LATEST DEVELOPMENTS: With the significant increase in functional ticlike behavior, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, diagnostic criteria for functional ticlike behavior have been delineated to separate these ticlike movements from the tics observed in Tourette syndrome. Although beha

Sleep disorders are very common in patients diagnosed with Tourette syndrome (TS). The present review focuses on sleep disorders and the results of polysomnographic studies performed in patients with TS. We made a search using the PubMed, Embase, MedLine, and Web of Science Databases, from 1966 until November 14, 2019, crossing the search term "Tourette syndrome" with "sleep", "sleep disorders", "sleep disturbances", and "polysomnography", and with each of the specific sleep disorders listed according to the International Classification of the Sleep Disorders-Third Edition. Then we identified

Motor and vocal tics have long been recognised as the core features of Tourette syndrome (TS). However, patients' first-person accounts have consistently reported that these involuntary motor manifestations have specific sensory correlates. These sensory symptoms are often described as feelings of mounting inner tension ("premonitory urges") and are transiently relieved by tic expression. Multimodal hypersensitivity to external stimuli, perceived as triggers and/or exacerbating factors for specific tic symptoms, is also commonly reported by patients with TS. This article focuses on the rapidly

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by multiple motor and vocal tics. Co-morbid behavioural problems are common and include obsessive-compulsive disorder, attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder, depression and anxiety. Both tics and behavioural symptoms tend to have a chronic course and can affect patients' health-related quality of life; however, little is known about the relationship between TS, social status and occupation. We conducted an exploratory study on a clinical sample of 137 adult patients with TS to investigate the association between the c

Tourette syndrome is a neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by tics. Tic generation is often linked to dysfunction of inhibitory brain networks. Some previous behavioral studies found deficiencies in inhibitory motor control in Tourette syndrome, but others suggested normal or even better-than-normal performance. Furthermore, neural correlates of action inhibition in these patients are poorly understood. We performed event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging during a stop-signal reaction-time task in 14 uncomplicated adult Tourette patients and 15 healthy controls. In patients, we

Tourette Syndrome (TS) is recognized as a more common neurodevelopmental disorder than once thought. In this article we present an update on TS including the DSM-5 revised criteria, new findings in the genetics of TS, treatment advances such as new medications for tics and the use of new tools including Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT). We also explore supportive services for the ongoing care of patients using nursing education and family therapy.

BACKGROUND: Tourette's syndrome is a developmental neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by multiple motor, stereotypical but non-rhythmic movements and vocalizations/phonics called tics. It is one of several disorders that have tics as their cardinal feature. These tics manifest themselves in various ways, ranging from simple eye blinking to coprolalia (involuntary swearing).
METHOD: We conducted a review in Medline and ScienceDirect without restrictions, after which we did a normative and qualitative analysis to identify relevant information to improve the profession's understanding of th

In this chapter, we report the first experimental explorations of reinforcement learning in Tourette syndrome, realized by our team in the last few years. This report will be preceded by an introduction aimed to provide the reader with the state of the art of the knowledge concerning the neural bases of reinforcement learning at the moment of these studies and the scientific rationale beyond them. In short, reinforcement learning is learning by trial and error to maximize rewards and minimize punishments. This decision-making and learning process implicates the dopaminergic system projecting t

Tourette syndrome is a complex neurological disorder that usually becomes evident between 4 and 18 years of age. The disorder is characterized by chronic motor and phonic tics, often with a variety of behavioural comorbidities; in particular, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and impulse control disorder. The cause of Tourette syndrome is poorly understood. Although environmental factors are proposed to have a role, genetic factors are thought to be the primary contributors to the pathogenesis of this disorder. However, identification of the causative gen

In severely affected, treatment resistant patients with Tourette syndrome (TS) new therapeutic strategies are urgently needed. Since 1999, 34 studies including more than 90 patients have been performed to investigate the efficacy and safety of deep brain stimulation (DBS) in the treatment of tics resulting in the vast majority of patients in an improvement of tics and in some patients even of comorbidities. Both surgery-related (e.g., bleeding, infection) and stimulation-related adverse events (e.g., loss of energy, blurred vision) seem to occur only in a minority of patients and not to cause

INTRODUCTION: Tourette syndrome (TS) is a neuropsychiatric developmental disorder characterized by the presence of multiple motor tics and one or more vocal tics. Although TS is primarily biological in origin, stress-diatheses interactions most probably play a role in the course of the illness. The precise influence of the environment on this basically biological disorder is difficult to ascertain, particularly when TS is complicated by comorbidities. Among the many questions that remain unresolved are the differential impact of positive and negative events and specific subtypes of events, and

INTRODUCTION: Tourette syndrome (TS) is thought to be associated with striatal dysfunction. Changes within frontostriatal pathways in TS could lead to changes in abilities reliant on the frontal cortex. Such abilities include executive functions and aspects of social reasoning.
METHODS: This study aimed to investigate executive functioning and Theory of Mind (ToM; the ability to reason about mental states, e.g., beliefs and emotions), in 18 patients with TS and 20 controls. A range of tasks involving ToM were used. These required participants to make judgements about mental states based on pi

Recent advances in our understanding of the phenomenology, etiology, pathophysiology, and treatment of Tourette syndrome are discussed. Tourette syndrome appears to involve dysfunction of limbic and somatosensory "traffic" through the basal ganglia, within corticostriatal-thalamocortical circuits. Dynamic alterations in the balance of these inputs may dictate the manifestations (sensory, motor, affective, and behavioral) of the disorder at any given time. Individualized assessment and treatment are the keys to optimal treatment of this condition.

OBJECTIVE: Tourette syndrome (TS) is a childhood-onset neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by multiple motor and vocal tics lasting at least a year in duration. Children with TS often experience comorbid conditions such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and attention-deficit disorder. The goal of this article was to review the long-term clinical course of tics and comorbid conditions in children with TS.
METHOD: We conducted a traditional literature search to locate relevant articles regarding long-term outcome and prognosis in TS and tic disorders.
RESULTS: Tics typically have an o
