Diseases of the trachea are rare, while other diseases associated with shortness of breath and pulmonary symptoms are common, which is why the necessary diagnosis and therapy are regularly delayed. At the same time, diseases range from simple scarring stenosis to extensive tumour disease. Patients may be otherwise healthy, suffer from autoimmune disease, or have severe general illnesses, as in tracheotomised patients. Therefore, history and clinical examination provide very important clues to a disease of the trachea. Subsequent diagnostics should be ordered in a reasonable manner and lead to

Resections at the cricoid level pose the problems of damage to the recurrent laryngeal nerve and loss of circumferential cartilaginous support. Strictures within the cricoid ring have usually been managed with keels or stents, whereas neoplasms have been managed by laryngectomy. This paper reports on 6 patients with lesions involving the cricoid who were successfully treated by segmental tracheal resection and removal of all but a thin shell of posterior cricoid plate. The distal trachea was anastomosed at the subglottic level within 1 cm. or less of the vocal cords. Two patients had traumatic

BACKGROUND: Cross-field endotracheal intubation is typically performed during tracheal anastomosis to maintain single-lung ventilation. To minimize obstruction of the surgical field by the cross-field tube, special equipment such as high-frequency jet ventilation (HFJV) and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) or advanced techniques such as non-intubated ventilation have been proposed. Here, we describe a simple and practical airway management strategy that requires only conventional ventilators and techniques. Our operation is completed under uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surge

A retrospective study of anesthetic and surgical techniques involved in 55 consecutive cases of tracheal and carinal resections completed from 2001 to 2007, is presented. The anesthetic maneuvers and surgical approach differed in relation with the site of the tracheal lesions (upper, middle, lower trachea or carinal), the degree of the obstruction, the emergency of the surgical intervention and the concomitant presence of the eso-tracheal fistula. Ventilatory support during anesthesia involved special equipment adapted to the particular techniques used in this type of surgery. Cross field intu

INTRODUCTION: Lymphoma can appear in all parts of the body and present with different symptoms. However, bronchial lymphoma is rare and can be misdiagnosed as airway malignancy or lung disease.Patient: An older adult woman with tracheal lymphoma experienced severe breathing difficulties, and chest computed tomography indicated severe narrowing of the airway. She did not respond to repeated antibiotic treatment, and she was eventually diagnosed with lymphoma based on pathology after surgical removal of the tumor.
DIAGNOSIS: The patient received a diagnosis of thoracic tracheal stenosis due to

Ninety-eight patients underwent operation for stenosing diseases of the bifurcation of the trachea at the Department of Lung and Mediastinal Surgery of the National Research Center of Surgery (Moscow) from 1963 to 1990. There were 44 females and 54 males. Their ages ranged from 6 to 69, average age of 38.2 years. The indications for the operation were as follows: malignant tumours in 84, benign tumours in 7, post-tuberculosis+ cicatricial tracheobronchial stenosis in 6 patients, and branchiogenic cyst in one patient. Surgical interventions were carried out in 86 and only endoscopic operations

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: This case report highlights the rarity of distal tracheal adenoid cystic carcinoma and emphasizes the importance of considering it as a differential diagnosis in patients presenting with sustained dyspnea. Early diagnosis and a multidisciplinary approach involving thoracic surgeons, radiation oncologists, and medical oncologists are crucial for optimal treatment planning and patient outcomes. Further research is warranted to better understand the pathogenesis, molecular characteristics, and optimal management strategies for this rare tracheal malignancy.
ABSTRACT: Adenoi

Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome (BHDS) is a rare, genetic, autosomal dominant disease caused by mutation in a folliculin gene. This syndrome is characterised by three main symptoms: benign lesions originating from hair follicles, variously shaped cysts in the lungs, and various types of benign and malignant kidney neoplasms. In our article we are going to present cases of two sisters with BHDS. In the case of the first sister skin lesions were accompanied by lung abnormalities. The second sister, however, presented with recurrent pneumothoraces associated with variously shaped lung cysts located mainl

Primary laryngeal lymphoma occurs very rarely, accounting for far less than 1% of primary malignant laryngeal neoplasms. To the best of our knowledge, primary laryngeal composite lymphoma has not been reported in the literature. Herein, we report the first case of primary laryngeal composite lymphoma composed of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and peripheral T-cell lymphoma, not otherwise specified (PTCL, NOS), in a 43-year-old man. Of special interest is the patient's unique clinical presentation of left subglottic tracheal fistula, esophageal diverticulum, and neck abscess with no disc

Primary windpipe tumour is extremely rare. Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common malignant form, especially in smokers. The radiological appearance of these neoplasms can be classified as intra-luminal, wall-thickening, exophytic form; the majority of the lesions are obstructive in nature and then tend to extra-luminal invasion. This tumour is usually diagnosed late on account of delayed specific symptoms: haemoptysis, dyspnoea, coughing, hoarseness, stridor. Surgery, followed by adjuvant radiotherapy, is the treatment of choice; primary radiotherapy, in inoperable cases, can represent a

The diseases affecting the trachea and main bronchi can be categorized into congenital or acquired abnormalities and also into focal or diffuse diseases. Major congenital bronchial abnormalities cover accessory cardiac bronchus and tracheal bronchus. Tracheobronchial strictures, such as post-intubation and post-infectious stenosis and tracheobronchial neoplasms are regarded as focal diseases, whereas tracheobronchomegaly, relapsing polychondritis, tracheobronchopathia osteochondroplastica, amyloidosis, granulomatosis with polyangiitis, tracheobronchomalacia, saber-sheath trachea and tracheobro

Glomus tumours are a group of benign neoplasms originating from the modified smooth muscle cells at the arteriovenous anastomosis that can impact body temperature and blood flow. They are most commonly seen in the subungual region of the subcutaneous tissue, and less frequently seen in organs including the lung and trachea. Tracheal Glomus Tumours (TGTs) are extremely rare subtypes of primary tracheal tumours affecting patients with a mean age of 45, most commonly seen in males and presenting symptoms including cough, dyspnoea, or haemoptysis. Although surgery is considered the primary approac

Male, 54 years old, with smoking habits. The patient complaints were cough, with bleeding secretions in the previous two months. Because of the persistence of the symptoms, a bronchoscopy was proposed. This exam showed multiple lesions in the trachea, nearly 2 cm above the vocal cords that compromised the airway and did not allow the progression of the bronchoscope. For this reason, it was decided to introduce a tracheal prosthesis. Because of instability, and the suspicion of malignancy we started thoracic irradiation. The histological specimen was compatible with anaplastic Lymphoma, CD 30+.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Pulmonary granular cell tumor (GCT) is a very rare neoplasm that originates from Schwann cells.
CASE PRESENTATION: Our case report describes a symptomatic benign pulmonary GCT found during follow-up CT imaging and was eventually excised with a good outcome.
CLINICAL DISCUSSION: GCT are mostly benign tumors. Pulmonary GCTs mostly occur in the endobronchial region and can be symptomatic or discovered incidentally.
CONCLUSION: Treatment options for pulmonary GCT are either conservative treatment or surgical resection depending on the size of the tumor and the prese

Tracheal resections are uncommon procedures in children. A tracheal resection is usually indicated for short-segment tracheal stenosis or tracheal tumours. A tracheal resection is very demanding, and success demands a collaborative effort from the anaesthesiologist, the ear, nose, and throat surgeons and the pulmonologist. Up to 50% of the trachea can be safely resected with good preoperative and intraoperative planning. The surgical approach to the trachea depends on the location and the extent of the lesions. In this case report, we describe the upper tracheal resection with an end-to-end an
