Halstead Category Test sensitivity to neurocognitive deficits in prenatal alcohol exposed and cognitively impaired children.

Objective: The Halstead Category Test (HCT) has been demonstrated to be sensitive to executive dysfunction in adults and children. Children with a history of significant prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) typically show deficits in executive functions in such areas as abstract reasoning, concept formation abilities, and cognitive flexibility. However, earlier research has not taken into account the demographic variables of age, sex, and ethnicity. Methods: Three groups of psychiatrically hospitalized children ages 9-17 years were included: Children with a history of PAE (n = 295); children with co

Reaction Time and Visible White Matter Lesions in Subcortical Ischemic Vascular Cognitive Impairment.

Slowed behavioral reaction time is associated with pathological brain changes, including white matter lesions, the common clinical characteristic of subcortical ischemic vascular cognitive impairment (SIVCI). In the present study, reaction time (RT) employing Trails B of the Trail Making Test, with responses capped at 300 s, was investigated in SIVCI (n = 27) compared to cognitively healthy aging (CH) (n = 26). RT was significantly slowed in SIVCI compared to CH (Cohen's d effect size = 1.26). Furthermore, failure to complete Trails B within 300 s was also a characteristic of SIVCI although so

Utility of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and its subset in HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND) screening.

OBJECTIVES: The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) is a useful screening tool for mild cognitive impairment. We aimed to know whether the full MoCA and subsets of the full test are effective for detecting HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND). METHODS: We examined the socio-demographic, clinical, functional, and neuropsychological levels of 194 HIV-infected patients. We compared total scores and scores from each cognitive domain of MoCA between patients with and without HAND. We also examined the utility of subsets of the full test using a few selective domains. The diagnostic accur

Impact of Integrase Strand Transfer Inhibitors on Cognition in the HAILO Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Integrase inhibitors (INSTIs) have been associated with poorer cognition in people with HIV (PWH). We examined the impact of switching to INSTIs on neuropsychological (NP) outcomes in PWH 40 years of age and older. METHODS: From the AIDS Clinical Trials Group observational cohort study, HAILO, we identified PWH who switched to INSTIs, had ≥2 NP assessments before and at least 1 after switch, and maintained viral suppression while on INSTIs. NP performance was assessed with a composite score (NPZ4) including Hopkins Verbal Learning Test (HVLT-R), Digit Symbol test (DSY), Trail Maki

Association of midlife smoking status with change in processing speed and mental flexibility among HIV-seropositive and HIV-seronegative older men: the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study.

Smoking is a potential risk factor for age-related cognitive decline. To date, no study has examined the association between smoking and cognitive decline in men living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The aim of this present study is to examine whether smoking status and severity in midlife is associated with a rate of decline in cognitive processing speed among older HIV-seropositive and HIV-seronegative men who have sex with men. Data from 591 older HIV-seropositive and HIV-seronegative men who have sex with men from the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study were examined. All participants

Comparison of Three Physical-Cognitive Training Programs in Healthy Older Adults: A Study Protocol for a Monocentric Randomized Trial.

(1) Combining aerobic, coordination and cognitive training allows for more improved physical and cognitive performance than when performed separately. A Nordic walking (NW) and two cognitive-motor circuit training programs (CT-c and CT-fit) are compared. CT-c and CT-fit stimulate cognition differently: CT-c, is through conventional complex coordination training performed in single and dual-task conditions; CT-fit, incorporates it into complex goal-directed actions, implemented by fitness gaming technology (2) The aim is to determine whether CT-fit brings additional benefits to cognition compar

Degree of self-certainty is related to the association between cognitive flexibility and anxiety following breast cancer treatments.

OBJECTIVE: Executive functioning difficulties-notably cognitive flexibility-are frequent following breast cancer (BC) treatment. Conflicting findings suggest that factors beyond anticancer treatments contribute to these changes. Anxiety and self-representation modifications are potential contributors. We explored the relationships among self-representations, anxiety, and cognitive flexibility in women with nonmetastatic BC compared with healthy controls (HCs). METHOD: We compared 54 BC patients to 47 HCs. We collected questionnaire data on self-representations (Questionnaire of Self-Represent

A four-year prospective study of cognitive functioning in Huntington's disease.

The contribution of neurologic, genetic, and demographic variables to decline in cognition was examined in 70 early- to mid-stage patients with Huntington's disease (HD) using random effects modeling. Study participants were followed prospectively at baseline and at four annual reevaluations. Only modest decline was noted on most neuropsychological variables. Neurologic dysfunction, assessed using the Quantified Neurologic Examination (QNE), proved to be the strongest predictor of cognitive decline. While significantly predictive of more rapid decline in neurologic functioning, CAG repeat leng

Closing-in Phenomenon in Huntington's Disease: A Neuropsychological Marker of Frontal/Executive Dysfunction.

OBJECTIVE: In visuo-constructional tasks, patients may reproduce drawings near-to or superimposed on a model, showing the so-called "Closing-in" (CI), often ascribed to a defect in inhibitory control. CI has been described in neurological conditions, but no studies have explored CI in Huntington's disease (HD), a neurodegenerative disorder often involving the frontal cortical-subcortical circuits. We searched for the occurrence of CI in HD patients and systematically investigated its correlates to find a clinical marker of the frontal/executive dysfunctions in the early examination of HD patie

Is cognitive aging predicted by one's own or one's parents' educational level? results from the three-city study.

The authors examined the associations of participants' and their parents' educational levels with cognitive decline while addressing methodological limitations that might explain inconsistent results in prior work. Residents of Dijon, France (n = 4,480) 65 years of age or older who were enrolled between 1999 and 2001 were assessed using the Isaacs' verbal fluency test, Benton Visual Retention Test, Trail Making Test B, and Mini-Mental State Examination up to 5 times over 9 years. The authors used random-intercepts mixed models with inverse probability weighting to account for differential surv

Impaired cognitive functions in adult-onset primary cranial cervical dystonia.

BACKGROUND: Adult-onset primary dystonia is thought to be a purely motor disorder. Nevertheless, several studies provided evidence that sensory and psychiatric disturbances may contribute to the clinical spectrum of of dystonia, whereas evidence supporting cognitive impairment is still limited. METHODS: A set of neuropsychological tests was administered to non depressed, non demented patients with cranial-cervical dystonia and healthy control subjects. The test battery included n-Back Task, Wechsler Memory Scale, Trail Making Test version A and B, and Wisconsin Card Sorting Test. RESULTS: As

The effect of acculturation on cognitive performance among older Hispanics in the United States.

The effect of acculturation on cognition was examined among 142 older Hispanics: cognitively normal [CN; n = 70], Mild Cognitive Impairment, amnestic [aMCI; n = 27], and Dementia [D; n = 45]. Acculturation levels (high vs. low) were determined using the Short Acculturation Scale for Hispanics (SASH). ANCOVAs used a wide variety of neuropsychological tests as independent variables controlling for age and education. Among CN subjects, the highly acculturated group performed better on Logical Memory delayed recall (LM-II) [F(1, 56) = 9.26, p < .001, ηp2 = 0.14], Digit Span Forward [F(1, 56) = 4.3
