Somatic tinnitus has been defined as tinnitus temporally associated to a somatic disorder involving the head and neck. Several studies have demonstrated the interactions between the somatosensory and auditory system at the dorsal cochlear nucleus (DCN), inferior colliculus, and parietal association areas. The objective is to verify the effect of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation of the upper cervical nerve (C2) in the treatment of somatic tinnitus. As electrical stimulation of C2 increases activation of the DCN through the somatosensory pathway and enlarges the inhibitory role of the

OBJECTIVES: Associative memory, the ability to bind and retrieve relationships between unrelated elements, is a cornerstone of human cognition and a primary target for neurorehabilitation. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) has emerged as a promising method to modulate the locus coeruleus-norepinephrine system and hippocampal-prefrontal circuits essential for memory. However, the comparative efficacy of noninvasive modalities such as electrical transcutaneous VNS (E-taVNS) and the emerging field of ultrasound (U-taVNS) remains poorly understood in the context of active recall.

BACKGROUND: Subjective tinnitus is characterized by perception of sound in the absence of any external or internal acoustic stimuli. Many approaches have been developed over the years to treat tinnitus (medical and nonmedical). However, no consensus has been reached on the optimal therapeutic approach. Electrical nerve stimulation targeting peripheral auditory pathways presents a promising area of investigation for the treatment of tinnitus. Non-invasive transcutaneous vagal nerve stimulation of the auricular branch of the vagus nerve has been introduced and studied but its success rate varies

Objectives.Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) to the lower back is an established electrical therapy for acute and chronic back pain. The efficacy and mechanisms of lower back TENS depend on the penetration depth of electrical current. We compare the intensity and spatial extent (depth) of current flow in the body during TENS with varied electrode positions/shapes on the human back.Materials and Methods.A high-resolution MRI-derived anatomical model of the back was developed, considering major tissue compartments, including skin and muscles. TENS with upper and lower back elect

A challenging complication in patients with peripheral compressive neuropathy is neuropathic pain. Excessive neuroinflammation at the injury site worsens neuropathic pain and impairs function. Currently, non-invasive modulation techniques like transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) have shown therapeutic promise with positive results. However, the underlying regulatory molecular mechanism for pain relief remains complex and unexplored. This study aimed to validate the therapeutic effect of ultrahigh frequency (UHF)-TENS in chronic constriction injury of the rat sciatic nerve. Allev

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease (SCD), one of the most common inherited disorders, is associated with vaso-occlusive pain episodes and haemolysis leading to recurrent morbidity, hospital admissions and work or school absenteeism. The crises are conventionally treated with opioids, non-opioids and other adjuvants with the risk of developing complications, addictions and drug-seeking behaviour. Different non-pharmacological treatments, such as transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) have been used for managing pain in other painful conditions. Hence, the efficacy of TENS for managing

INTRODUCTION: Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a non-pharmacological intervention clinically used for pain relief. The importance of utilizing the adequate stimulation intensity is well documented; however, clinical methods to achieve the highest possible intensity are not established.
OBJECTIVES: Our primary aim was to determine if exposure to the full range of clinical levels of stimulation, from sensory threshold to noxious, would result in higher final stimulation intensities. A secondary aim explored the association of pain, disease severity, and psychological variab

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study is to characterize the phenomenon of evoked tactile sensation (ETS) on the stump skin of forearm amputees using transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS).
APPROACH: We identified the projected finger map (PFM) of ETS on the stump skin in 11 forearm amputees, and compared perceptual attributes of the ETS in nine forearm amputees and eight able-bodied subjects using TENS. The profile of perceptual thresholds at the most sensitive points (MSPs) in each finger-projected area was obtained by modulating current amplitude, pulse width, and frequency of the

Sixty patients with intractable cancer pain were subjected to transcutaneous electrical stimulation for pain control. Evaluation, after two weeks of treatment, revealed: 17 (28.3%) excellent response, 22 (36.2%) fair and 21 (35.0%) no relief. Re-assessment after 3 months revealed 9 (15%) excellent responses, 11 (18.3%) fair and 40 (67%) failures. Extremity and trunk pains appeared to be most rewarding to patient pain, so far as pain relief is concerned. Perineal and pelvic pains were most difficult to control, only 5 of 12 (41%) cases obtained some short term relief. Pain location and sources

A girl with knee flexion contracture secondary to linear scleroderma with hemiatrophy was treated with hot packs, gentle stretching and a serial posterior splint. The knee range of motion gained 35 degree over a period of 16 weeks. Nine months, later knee contracture had regressed. As an alternative method of treatment, continuous stretch was applied by using a front extension splint together with transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. The knee range of motion gained 55 degrees over a period of 6 weeks.

Introduction: Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs) are the most common source of pain on the face. There are multiple etiologies, and several types of treatment have been reported. The use of non-invasive and reversible therapies in the treatment of such problems is recommended. The present study evaluated the effect of low-level laser (LLL) therapy and transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation (TENS) on TMDs. Methods: In this single-blind study, 40 patients with temporomandibular disorders were randomly divided into four groups: TENS (TENSTem dental), LLL (diode 810 nm CW), shamTENS, and

OBJECTIVE: Blockade of the stellate ganglion is an established and highly effective diagnostic and therapeutic procedure for management of certain acute and chronic pain syndromes or other disorders. The paratracheal injection of a local anaesthetic is the simplest and most frequently used approach for blocking the cervicothoracic sympathetic nerves (ganglion stellate). However, since serious complications can occur during or following the anterior paratracheal technique including accidental intravenous or intraarterial injection, non-invasive methods for blockade of the stellate ganglion have

OBJECTIVES: Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) is a noninvasive neuromodulation technique that has shown potential to enhance cognitive function, including working memory. This study investigated the acute effects of both electrical taVNS (E-taVNS) and ultrasound taVNS (U-taVNS) modalities on working memory by using a 3-back task in healthy young adults. We hypothesized that active taVNS would enhance working memory performance compared with sham and that both stimulation modalities would engage similar neuromodulatory mechanisms.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-nine partic
