Glycosylation is a cell type-specific post-translational modification that can be used for biomarker identification in various diseases. Aim of this study is to explore glycan-biomarkers on transferrin (Tf) for Alzheimer's disease (AD) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Glycan structures of CSF Tf were analyzed by ultra-performance liquid chromatography followed by mass spectrometry. Both iron overload and iron deficiency have been associated with cardiomyopathy and heart failure, but cardiac iron utilization is incompletely understood. We hypothesized that the transferrin receptor (Tfr1) might play a role in cardiac iron uptake and used gene targeting to examine the role of Tfr1 in vivo. Transferrin is the major iron transporter in blood plasma, and is also found, at lower concentrations, in saliva. We studied the synthesis and secretion of transferrin in rat parotid acinar cells in order to elucidate its secretory pathways. Cerebrospinal rhinorrhoea is potentially serious due to the risk from infection. In patients presenting with a nasal discharge of clear fluid it is important to identify the nature of the fluid. Cerebrospinal fluid is readily identified by the presence of asialo-transferrin (tau protein). A method is presented for the identification of tau protein based upon agarose electrophoresis, followed by transfer onto cellulose nitrate membrane and immunochemical detection of transferrin. The method is reliable, sensitive and simple, and requires only basic electrophoresis apparatus.

Seminal fluid transferrin concentrations of proven fertile donors and normozoospermic patients were significantly higher (P less than 0.001) than those in other groups examined. There were no significant differences in the transferrin values among vasectomized, azoospermic and very severe oligozoospermic subjects. The transport of non-transferrin-bound iron into rabbit reticulocytes was investigated by incubating the cells in 0.27 M sucrose with iron labelled with 59Fe.
