Treatment of dural arteriovenous fistula presenting as typical symptoms of hydrocephalus caused by venous congestion: case report.

A 76-year-old woman presented with a dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF) manifesting as typical symptoms of normal pressure hydrocephalus such as progressive dementia, gait disturbances, and urinary incontinence. The cerebrospinal fluid pressure during lumbar puncture was 120 mmH(2)O. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed ventricular dilation and diffuse white matter changes, which were consistent with the symptoms of hydrocephalus. Cerebral angiography revealed a DAVF in the transverse-sigmoid sinuses with severe cortical venous reflux into the superior sagittal sinus. Tran

[Reconstruction of the venous outflow using a vein graft in dural arteriovenous malformation associated with sinus occlusion].

In some cases of dural arteriovenous malformations (dural AVMs) of the transverse-sigmoid sinuses, the presence of an occlusion or hypoplasia on the sinus contralateral to the affected side may significantly contribute to the development of intracranial hypertension. For these cases, closure of AV shunts or removal of the affected sinus may not be sufficient to improve intracranial hypertension. We encountered 2 cases of intracranial hypertension caused by dural AVMs at the transverse-sigmoid sinuses associated with disturbance of venous outflow contralateral to the lesion. Reconstruction of v

Multiple dural arteriovenous malformations. Report of two cases.

Two cases of multiple dural arteriovenous malformations (AVM's) in different locations are reported. One patient was diagnosed as having a dural AVM involving the right cavernous sinus that disappeared spontaneously 4 months after onset of symptoms. After an interval of 4 months, another dural AVM appeared involving the right lateral sinuses (transverse and sigmoid sinuses) with occlusion of the right sigmoid sinus. In the other patient, multiple dural AVM's were demonstrated on angiography, one involving the cavernous sinus and the other the left lateral sinus. The frequency of multiple occur

Dural arteriovenous malformations and papilledema.

We examined and managed two patients with posterior fossa dural arteriovenous malformations (DAVMs) and papilledema. Both DAVMs had venous drainage into the transverse, straight, and sigmoid dural venous sinuses. The mechanism of papilledema in the first case was presumed venous hypertension resulting in impaired cerebrospinal fluid absorption, as the malformation drained into the single transverse sinus. This was cured by selective arterial embolization of the causative DAVM. The second patient had venous sinus thrombosis that impaired venous drainage despite embolization. A lumboperitoneal s

[Intracranial complications from ENT infections].

Sinonasal and temporal bone infections may extend to the skull, skull base, meninges, pericerebral spaces, brain parenchyma, dural sinuses, deep cerebral or cortical veins, intracranial arteries and cranial nerves either via contiguous or hematogeneous spread. The site of infection dictates the sites of potential complications: orbital with ethmoid sinusitis, cavernous sinus thrombophlebitis and oculomotor palsies with sphenoid sinusitis, transverse sinus thrombophlebitis with mastoiditis and superior sagittal sinus thrombophlebitis with frontal sinusitis. All may result in brain abscess. Cong

Gross Anatomical Description and CT Scan of the Dromedary Paranasal Sinuses.

Ten dromedary heads, aged between 12 and 18 months, were used to study the anatomy of the paranasal sinuses. The main aim of this work is to provide a detailed and comprehensive description of the anatomy of the dromedary paranasal sinuses and associated structures. By combining Computed Tomography (CT) scans and macroscopic anatomical sections, our study aimed to develop a CT atlas, accompanied by a 3D reconstruction of the healthy sinuses. The anatomical study of the dromedary paranasal sinuses was carried out using fenestrations and transverse anatomical sections and allowed us to study the

Clinical presentation and patient outcomes following endovascular intervention for venous sinus diverticula: A single center experience.

INTRODUCTION: Venous diverticula are rare neurovascular anomalies consisting of outpouchings in venous sinus walls, occurring with a prevalence of 23 % in the sigmoid sinus. However, venous diverticula can develop in the transverse sinus and jugular bulb, as well often with skull base bony dehiscence. Debilitating pulsatile tinnitus can be associated with the presence of venous sinus diverticula warranting open or endovascular treatment. We report our experience with patient presentation and outcomes with successful endovascular treatment modalities for diverticula cure. MATERIALS AND METHODS

Topographical anatomy of the tentorium cerebelli and venous confluences in human midterm fetuses.

Early development of veins and sinuses at and around the posterior cranial fossa seemed not to be shown by photographs except for our recent study (Ann Anat, 2020). Examination of histological sections of 38 fetuses at 10-16 weeks gestational age (GA) demonstrated that: (1) the superior petrosal sinus passed posterosuperiorly through the tentorium cerebelli and, distant and lateral to both the cerebellum and internal ear, drained into the transverse sinus; (2) the superior sagittal sinus was underdeveloped, and the inferior sagittal sinus was not yet evident; (3) the straight sinus (STS) origi

A new method for assessing transverse sinus stenosis with CT venography based on the venous trans-stenotic pressure gradient.

BACKGROUND: Evaluation of the transverse sinus stenosis (TSS) is essential for TSS-related diseases. OBJECTIVE: To investigate a new method for the quantitative assessment of TSS based on the correlation between TSS and trans-stenotic pressure gradient (TPG). METHODS: Patients with unilateral pulsatile tinnitus with or without idiopathic intracranial hypertension were retrospectively included. All patients underwent CT venography and venous manometry and were confirmed to have TSS. The cross-sectional diameter/area of TSS, the poststenotic and prestenotic segments, and the superior sagittal

An unusual presentation of cystic hydatid disease: Left temporal bone involvement with transverse sinus obliteration.

Cystic hydatid disease (CHD), caused by Echinococcus granulosus, remains a significant global health concern. While commonly affecting the liver and lungs, rare localizations can pose diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. This report presents a case of CHD affecting the left temporal bone, originating from the mastoid cells, resulting in left transverse sinus obliteration and cerebellar hemisphere compression. This unusual presentation highlights the importance of considering CHD in the differential diagnosis of neurological symptoms, including vertigo, even in the absence of more typical cli

The use of maxillary sinus dimensions in gender determination: a thin-slice multidetector computed tomography assisted morphometric study.

Gender determination is an important step in identification. For gender determination, anthropometric evaluation is one of the main forensic evaluations. In the present study, morphometric analysis of maxillary sinuses was performed to determine gender. For morphometric analysis, coronal and axial paranasal sinus computed tomography (CT) scan with 1-mm slice thickness was used. For this study, 140 subjects (70 women and 70 men) were enrolled (age ranged between 18 and 63). The size of each subject's maxillary sinuses was measured in anteroposterior, transverse, cephalocaudal, and volume direct

Infantile dural sinus malformation: curative embolization in two stages with the Scepter mini balloon microcatheter.

Endovascular embolization is the mainstay for treatment of infantile dural sinus malformations.1 2 Distal access and flow control are limiting factors in controlled embolization.3-6 The Scepter mini catheter (Microvention, Aliso Viejo, California, USA) is a low-profile, dual-lumen balloon microcatheter designed to provide navigability in small-caliber, tortuous intracranial vessels. In this technical video, we demonstrate the staged embolization of a dural sinus malformation with multiple arteriovenous fistulae using the Scepter mini catheter (video 1). In the newborn patient, embolizations we

Arteriovenous malformation affecting the transverse dural venous sinus--an acquired lesion.

Dural arteriovenous malformations of the transverse sinus are relatively well localized to the occipitomastoid regions and occur predominantly in women who are more than 40 years of age. The signs and symptoms, except for pulsatile tinnitus, vary and apparently depend on the presence of impaired venous drainage, which may produce increased intracranial pressure, papilledema, and transient or persistent neurologic deficits. Eight of the 14 patients described had occlusion of one or both transverse or sigmoid sinuses. Two patients had angiographic demonstration of sigmoid or transverse sinus occ

Clinical anatomy of the equine sphenopalatine sinus.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Disorders of the equine sphenopalatine sinus, including empyema and neoplasia, have been reported to cause damage to cranial nerves II and V. However, the clinical anatomy of these sinuses is not well described in horses. OBJECTIVE: To examine the anatomy of the sphenopalatine sinuses in a range of equidae and, in particular, to examine the relationship of these sinuses to adjacent major nerves and vessels. METHODS: The anatomy of the sphenoidal and palatine paranasal sinuses was examined in 16 equidae, primarily using transverse skull sections. Relevant structu

Brain herniations into the dural venous sinuses or calvarium: MRI of a recently recognized entity.

Brain herniations into dural venous sinuses (DVS) are rare findings recently described and their etiology and clinical significance are controversial. We describe five patients with brain herniations into the DVS or calvarium identified on MRI, and discuss their imaging findings, possible causes, and relationship to the patient's symptoms. All patients were examined with MRI including high resolution pre- and post-contrast T1- and T2-weighted sequences. With respect to brain herniations we documented their locations, signal intensities in different sequences, and size. We then reviewed clinica

Endovascular treatment of dural sinus thrombosis with rheolytic thrombectomy and intra-arterial thrombolysis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cerebral venous thrombosis is a rare entity that can be difficult to manage. Intrasinus thrombolysis is an increasingly applied intervention, but this modality carries an increased risk of hemorrhage. We describe for the first time an option with a potentially lower incidence of intracranial bleeding, the combination of the AngioJet rheolytic thrombectomy catheter with intra-arterial thrombolysis, in 2 patients with extensive dural sinus thromboses, preexisting intracranial hemorrhage, and severe progressive neurological deficits despite heparin therapy. METHODS: Four
