Electromagnetic and Electrophysiological Modeling of Cardiac Stimulation Thresholds in 13 MRI Gradient Systems and 56 Body Models.

PURPOSE: The MRI safety standard IEC 60601-2-33 limits the maximum dB/dt and E-field induced by MRI gradients to protect patients from cardiac stimulation (CS). Those limits were set in the early 2000s based on a compilation of electrode stimulation measurements in animals as well as electromagnetic calculations in a homogeneous ellipsoid. We re-evaluate CS in MRI using state-of-the-art electromagnetic and electrophysiological modeling in realistic body models and gradient coils. METHODS: We predicted CS thresholds in 56 realistic body models and 13 commercial gradient systems for trapezoidal

Technical Considerations and Outcomes for Panniculectomy in the Setting of Buried Penis Patients: A Systematic Review and Database Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Often secondary to obesity, adult-acquired buried penis (AABP) is an increasingly common condition. AABP is often detrimental to urinary and sexual function, psychological well-being, and quality of life. Surgical treatment involves resection of excess soft tissue, with adjunct procedures, including a panniculectomy. However, few studies have been conducted investigating the risks of panniculectomy in the context of AABP surgical repair. METHODS: A systematic review of PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases was performed, following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Descriptive statistic

Ambras Syndrome: First Reported Case in Bangladesh and its Oral Rehabilitation.

People with rare hypertrichosis syndromes became crowd-drawing money-making phenomena in many 19th century sideshow acts. These individuals have been referred to as dog-men, hair-men, and werewolves. In 1993, Baumister et al. described congenital hypertrichosis lanuginose or Ambras syndrome: a distinct form of congenital hypertrichosis characterized by excessive hair growth over the body and face associated with facial and occasional dental anomalies. Much is not known about this syndrome since fewer than 50 cases have been documented worldwide. In this case report, a nine year old girl presen

Auditory brainstem anomalies in albino cats. I. Evoked potential studies.

The amount of melanin pigmentation in the inner ear is positively correlated with the general pigmentation of the body and specifically with the amount of pigment in the eye. The misrouting of retinofugal projections which accompanies ocular and oculocutaneous albinism has been thought to be a defect in decussation unique to the visual system. Evidence suggests that functional abnormalities may also exist in the auditory systems of albino humans and animals. To evaluate this possibility, evoked potential techniques were used to examine the functional anatomy of decussating brainstem auditory p

Parabrachial nucleus neuronal responses to off-vertical axis rotation in macaques.

The caudal aspect of the parabrachial nucleus (PBN) contains neurons responsive to whole body, periodic rotational stimulation in alert monkeys (Balaban et al. in J Neurophysiol 88:3175-3193, 2002). This study characterizes the angular and linear motion-sensitive response properties of PBN unit responses during off-vertical axis rotation (OVAR) and position trapezoid stimulation. The OVAR responses displayed a constant firing component which varied from the firing rate at rest. Nearly two-thirds of the units also modulated their discharges with respect to head orientation (re: gravity) during

Bottom-up butterfly model with thorax-pitch control and wing-pitch flexibility.

The diversity in butterfly morphology has attracted many people around the world since ancient times. Despite morphological diversity, the wing and body kinematics of butterflies have several common features. In the present study, we constructed a bottom-up butterfly model, whose morphology and kinematics are simplified while preserving the important features of butterflies. The present bottom-up butterfly model is composed of two trapezoidal wings and a rod-shaped body with a thorax and abdomen. Its wings are flapped downward in the downstroke and backward in the upstroke by changing the geom

Abnormal neuronal and glial argyrophilic fibrillary structures in the brain of an aged albino cynomolgus monkey (Macaca fascicularis).

An aged albino male cynomolgus monkey (Macaca fascicularis) more than 35 years old died after showing neurological signs including gait disturbance, trembling, drowsing tendency and a decrease in activity. Neuropathological examination revealed glial fibrillary tangles (GFTs) mainly distributed in the putamen, caudate nucleus, thalamic nuclei, substantia nigra, red nucleus, globus pallidus, trapezoid body, pyramid, pons and medulla oblongata of the brain, and neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) in the thalamic nuclei. These structures were positively stained by the modified Gallyas-Braak (GB) metho

Exposure of Infants to Gradient Fields in a Baby MRI Scanner.

In pediatric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), infants are exposed to rapid, time-varying gradient magnetic fields, leading to electric fields induced in the body of infants and potential safety risks (e.g. peripheral nerve stimulation). In this numerical study, the in situ electric fields in infants induced by small-sized gradient coils for a 1.5 T MRI scanner were evaluated. The gradient coil set was specially designed for the efficient imaging of infants within a small-bore (baby) scanner. The magnetic flux density and induced electric fields by the small x, y, z gradient coils in an infant

An Exclusion Zone for Ca2+ Channels around Docked Vesicles Explains Release Control by Multiple Channels at a CNS Synapse.

The spatial arrangement of Ca2+ channels and vesicles remains unknown for most CNS synapses, despite of the crucial importance of this geometrical parameter for the Ca2+ control of transmitter release. At a large model synapse, the calyx of Held, transmitter release is controlled by several Ca2+ channels in a "domain overlap" mode, at least in young animals. To study the geometrical constraints of Ca2+ channel placement in domain overlap control of release, we used stochastic MCell modelling, at active zones for which the position of docked vesicles was derived from electron microscopy (EM). Functional organization of auditory cortical fields in the Mongolian gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus): binaural 2-deoxyglucose patterns.

Unilaterally deafened (cochlear destruction) gerbils were exposed to white noise after injection of 14-C-2-deoxyglucose. The labelling patterns were compared to those of unstimulated operated animals, noise stimulated control animals and bilaterally ear plugged animals. Serial transverse, horizontal and tangential autoradiographs through the cortex were analysed. In lesioned animals, labelling was strongly reduced on the side contralateral to the lesion in the high frequency regions of A1 and the anterior auditory field (AAF). We assume that these regions correspond to the high frequency EI ce

Streptococcus pyogenes induced septic arthritis of the wrist secondary to a temporal abscess and trapezoid fracture - A case report.

Septic arthritis (SA) of the wrist is a rare and challenging condition that requires rapid treatment to prevent irreversible joint damage. We present a unique case of a hematogenously spread SA of the wrist caused by Streptococcus pyogenes, secondary to a temporal abscess. The patient, a previously healthy 36-year-old man without known risk factors aside from occasional alcohol consumption, exhibited wrist pain without fever or overt signs of infection. One week prior, he had suffered a temporal laceration and a non-displaced trapezoid fractur following a minor fall on his head and hand. In th

Bidirectional remodeling of the central auditory system caused by unilateral auditory deprivation.

Unilateral auditory deprivation (UAD) results in cross-modal reorganization of the auditory cortex (AC), which can impair auditory and cognitive functions and diminish the recovery effect of cochlear implantation. Moreover, the subcortical areas provide extensive ascending projections to the AC. To date, a thorough systematic study of subcortical auditory neural plasticity has not been undertaken. Therefore, this review aims to summarize the current evidence on the bidirectional remodeling of the central auditory system caused by UAD, particularly the changes in subcortical neural plasticity.

Distinct Cellular Profiles of Hif1a and Vegf mRNA Localization in Microglia, Astrocytes and Neurons during a Period of Vascular Maturation in the Auditory Brainstem of Neonate Rats.

Defining the relationship between vascular development and the expression of hypoxia-inducible factors (Hifs) and vascular endothelial growth factor (Vegf) in the auditory brainstem is important to understand how tissue hypoxia caused by oxygen shortage contributes to sensory deficits in neonates. In this study, we used histology, molecular labeling, confocal microscopy and 3D image processing methods to test the hypothesis that significant maturation of the vascular bed in the medial nucleus of the trapezoid body (MNTB) occurs during the postnatal period that precedes hearing onset. Dopaminergic projections of the subparafascicular thalamic nucleus to the auditory brainstem.

Neuromodulators can alter the response properties of sensory neurons, including those in the auditory system. Dopamine, which plays a major role in reward and movement, has been shown to alter neural responses in the auditory brainstem and midbrain. Recently we identified the subparafascicular thalamic nucleus (SPF), part of the A11 dopaminergic cell group, as the source of dopamine to the inferior colliculus (IC). The superior olivary complex (SOC) is also a likely target of dopaminergic projections from the SPF because it receives projections from the SPF and contains fibers and terminals im

Neurexins control the strength and precise timing of glycinergic inhibition in the auditory brainstem.

Neurexins play diverse functions as presynaptic organizers in various glutamatergic and GABAergic synapses. However, it remains unknown whether and how neurexins are involved in shaping functional properties of the glycinergic synapses, which mediate prominent inhibition in the brainstem and spinal cord. To address these issues, we examined the role of neurexins in a model glycinergic synapse between the principal neuron in the medial nucleus of the trapezoid body (MNTB) and the principal neuron in the lateral superior olive (LSO) in the auditory brainstem. Combining RNAscope with stereotactic

R-type Ca2+ currents evoke transmitter release at a rat central synapse.

Voltage-dependent Ca2+ currents evoke synaptic transmitter release. Of six types of Ca2+ channels, L-, N-, P-, Q-, R-, and T-type, only N- and P/Q-type channels have been pharmacologically identified to mediate action-potential-evoked transmitter release in the mammalian central nervous system. We tested whether Ca2+ channels other than N- and P/Q-type control transmitter release in a calyx-type synapse of the rat medial nucleus of the trapezoid body. Simultaneous recordings of presynaptic Ca2+ influx and the excitatory postsynaptic current evoked by a single action potential were made at sing

SPARCL1-containing neurons in the human brainstem and sensory ganglion.

Secreted protein, acidic and rich in cysteine-like 1 (SPARCL1) is a member of the osteonectin family of proteins. In this study, immunohistochemistry for SPARCL1 was performed to obtain its distribution in the human brainstem, cervical spinal cord, and sensory ganglion. SPARCL1-immunoreactivity was detected in neuronal cell bodies including perikarya and proximal dendrites, and the neuropil. The motor nuclei of the IIIrd, Vth, VIth, VIIth, IXth, Xth, XIth, and XIIth cranial nerves and spinal nerves contained many SPARCL1-immunoreactive (-IR) neurons with medium-sized to large cell bodies. Ontogenesis of the sperm whale brain.

The development of the sperm whale brain (Physeter macrocephalus) was investigated in 12 embryos and early fetuses to obtain a better understanding of the morphological and physiological adaptations in this most exotic cetacean concerning locomotion, deep diving, and orientation. In male adult sperm whales, the average absolute brain mass and the relative size of the telencephalic hemisphere are the largest within the mammalia, whereas the ratio of the brain mass to the total body mass is one of the smallest. In the early sperm whale fetus, the rostral part of the olfactory system (olfactory n

Input timing for spatial processing is precisely tuned via constant synaptic delays and myelination patterns in the auditory brainstem.

Precise timing of synaptic inputs is a fundamental principle of neural circuit processing. The temporal precision of postsynaptic input integration is known to vary with the computational requirements of a circuit, yet how the timing of action potentials is tuned presynaptically to match these processing demands is not well understood. In particular, action potential timing is shaped by the axonal conduction velocity and the duration of synaptic transmission delays within a pathway. However, it is not known to what extent these factors are adapted to the functional constraints of the respectiv
