Effect of light on the trematode Himasthla elongata: from cercarial behaviour to infection success.

The cockle Cerastoderma edule, a socioeconomically important bivalve of the northeast Atlantic, is host to several trematodes, including Himasthla elongata. In the life cycle of this trematode, cercariae (free-living stages) emerge from the first intermediate host, a snail, to infect cockles as second intermediate hosts. During their lifespan (less than 2 d), cercariae must ensure successful host-to-host transmission via the surrounding water and therefore are exposed to and impacted by different environmental conditions, including abiotic factors. Given that the light:dark cycle is one of the

Atypical lesions and infection sites of larval trematodes in marine gastropods from Argentina.

This study documents the lesions caused by 9 digenean larvae parasitizing 6 marine gastropod species from Patagonia, Argentina. Most digeneans produce a lesion where the parthenitae replace the gonadal tissues and also occupy part of the digestive gland. Three atypical lesions and tropism were observed in (1) Trophon geversianus (Muricidae) infected by Renicolidae gen. et sp. 1, where the sporocysts occur inside the gonad acini which retain their general structure due to the persistence of the acinus wall, (2) Nacella magellanica (Nacellidae) infected by Renicolidae gen. et sp. 2, where the go

Assessing the effects of trematode infection on invasive green crabs in eastern north america.

A common signature of marine invasions worldwide is a significant loss of parasites (= parasite escape) in non-native host populations, which may confer a release from some of the harmful effects of parasitism (e.g., castration, energy extraction, immune activation, behavioral manipulation) and possibly enhance the success of non-indigenous species. In eastern North America, the notorious invader Carcinus maenas (European green crab) has escaped more than two-thirds its native parasite load. However, one of its parasites, a trematode (Microphallus similis), can be highly prevalent in the non-n

Enhanced liver cell mutations in trematode-infected Big Blue transgenic mice.

Parasite infections in humans have long been associated with specific types of cancers. Schistosoma hematobium is a known inducer of urinary bladder cancer, Helicobacter pylori is a gastric carcinogen, and hepatitis B virus and Opisthorchis viverrini are causative agents of liver cell cancers. Another liver fluke, Fasciola hepatica, has also been identified as a neoplastic risk agent, primarily in animals. We used F. hepatica as a model agent to determine if the presence of an aggressive liver fluke could induce mutagenic events in mammalian tissue. Using the Big Blue(R) transgenic mouse assay

Estimation of the mutagenic potential of the trematode Opisthorchis felineus in experimentally infected guinea pigs.

We studied the mutagenic potential of the trematode Opisthorchis felineus in experimentally infected guinea pigs by chromosome analysis. The investigation was conducted on 30 treated (experimentally infected) and 20 normal (uninfected) guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus). A sample of living metacercariae of O. felineus was obtained from the muscle of naturally infected crucian carp captured in the Tom River, and 1 ml suspension containing approximately 50 metacercariae in 0.9% NaCl solution was individually given p.o. to guinea pigs that were used as treated specimens, whereas normal guinea pigs fro

Improving the specific diagnosis of trematode, cestode and nematode infections by a multiplex single-tube real-time PCR assay.

AIMS: Helminth infections are becoming uncommon in high-income countries and laboratory staff may lose expertise in their morphological identification, especially in histological sections where speciation of helminths is challenging. Commercially available molecular diagnostic panels for faecal specimens only offer tests for protozoa but not helminths. We aim to improve the identification accuracy of helminths using a multiplex PCR assay. METHODS: We designed three pairs of PCR primers and probes targeting multicopy genes for a multiplex single-tube real-time PCR assay which covers 16 tremato

Mini-FLOTAC as an alternative, non-invasive diagnostic tool for Schistosoma mansoni and other trematode infections in wildlife reservoirs.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis and food-borne trematodiases are not only of major public health concern, but can also have profound implications for livestock production and wildlife conservation. The zoonotic, multi-host nature of many digenean trematodes is a significant challenge for disease control programmes in endemic areas. However, our understanding of the epidemiological role that animal reservoirs, particularly wild hosts, may play in the transmission of zoonotic trematodiases suffers a dearth of information, with few, if any, standardised, reliable diagnostic tests available. We combin

How costly are metacercarial infections in a bivalve host? Effects of two trematode species on biochemical performance of cockles.

Bivalve stocks have been decreasing in the last decades largely due to emergent diseases and consequent mass mortality episodes. Cerastoderma edule (the edible cockle) is one of the most exploited bivalves in Europe and is among the most common hosts for trematodes, the most prevalent macroparasites in coastal waters but yet poorly studied. Therefore, in the present study, this bivalve species was used as host model to determine if trematode infection exerts a negative effect on bivalve energy metabolism and balance and if the tissues targeted by different trematodes influence the metabolic co

Associations between trematode infections in cattle and freshwater snails in highland and lowland areas of Iringa Rural District, Tanzania.

The epidemiology of trematode infections in cattle was investigated within highland and lowland areas of Iringa Rural District, in southern Tanzania. Fecal samples were collected from 450 cattle in 15 villages at altitudes ranging from 696 to 1800 m above the sea level. Freshwater snails were collected from selected water bodies and screened for emergence of cercariae. The infection rates in cattle were Fasciola gigantica 28·2%, paramphistomes 62·8% and Schistosoma bovis 4·8%. Notably, prevalence of trematode infections in cattle was much higher in highland (altitude > 1500 m) as compared with

Parasite infection intensity and infection site, rather than host species, shape the histopathological effects of trematode infections in anuran tadpoles.

Anuran amphibians play essential ecological roles and are considered important bioindicators. This is especially true during the larval stage, when tadpoles exhibit high sensitivity to parasitic infections, including trematode metacercariae. These infections can profoundly affect the physiology and morphology of juvenile hosts, potentially compromising tissues involved in osmoregulation, locomotion, and development. We analysed naturally infected tadpoles, performing parasitological screening and histopathological evaluation. Through field collection, euthanasia, histological processing, and m

Intermediate insights: tracing trematodes infecting amphibians via their first intermediate snail hosts.

BACKGROUND: Amphibians are a prime example of the global biodiversity crisis, as they represent the most threatened group of vertebrates. Yet, amphibian macroparasites remain one of the most poorly described groups of parasites, with the majority of species lacking comprehensive morphological, molecular, or ecological data. Among these, digenean trematodes constitute a dominant group and feature multi-host life cycles. This study examines the first intermediate hosts of trematodes, aquatic gastropods, to assess the occurrence, prevalence, and seasonality of amphibian trematodes. METHODS: A to

Diversity of trematode cercariae among naturally infected lymnaeid snails from Phayao, Thailand.

Lymnaeids are aquatic snails playing an important role in the transmission of many parasitic trematode species of veterinary and medical importance. In this study, we assessed the presence of cercarial flukes in naturally infected lymnaeid snails from Phayao province, Thailand, and determined the species diversity of both the intermediate snail hosts and parasite larvae. A total of 3,185 lymnaeid snails were collected from paddy fields at 31 sites in eight districts of Phayao province between October 2021 and December 2022. Larval fluke infection was assessed using the cercarial shedding metho

Infection with Trematodes in Littorina obtusata Snails (Gastropoda: Littorinidae) with Different Shell Color Genotypes.

The prevalence of infection with trematode parthenitae was studied in Littorina obtusata littoral periwinkles with different shell color genotypes. Activities of genes responsible for a purple or orange single-pigment background shell coloration was not found to affect the prevalence of trematode infection in periwinkles. In L. obtusata with a yellow-purple background shell color and a pattern of white pigment spots on the shell, the prevalence of infection with Microphallus piriformes and M. pygmaeus was lower than the theoretical expectation. The prevalence of infection in periwinkles with p

Simultaneous genotyping of snails and infecting trematode parasites using high-throughput amplicon sequencing.

Several methodological issues currently hamper the study of entire trematode communities within populations of their intermediate snail hosts. Here we develop a new workflow using high-throughput amplicon sequencing to simultaneously genotype snail hosts and their infecting trematode parasites. We designed primers to amplify four snail and five trematode markers in a single multiplex PCR. While also applicable to other genera, we focused on medically and economically important snail genera within the superorder Hygrophila and targeted a broad taxonomic range of parasites within the class Trema

The effect of trematode infection on the markers of oxidative stress in the offspring of the freshwater snail Lymnaea stagnalis.

Most invertebrate species exhibit immunological responses that can inactivate and eliminate penetrating parasites. Such immune responses in particular involve the formation of potentially toxic reactive oxygen species (ROS). We explored the immune capabilities of the first-generation (F1) offspring of naturally infected freshwater snails, Lymnaea stagnalis, in response to infection by trematode cercariae under laboratory conditions. The rates of ROS formation and peroxidase activity in the hemolymph of the F1 offspring of L. stagnalis parents infected by an asexual stage of trematodes were sig

Effect of dose and frequency of exposure to infectious stages on trematode infection intensity and success in mussels.

Marine parasites such as trematodes often compromise the fitness of their hosts. Such effects are generally considered to be density-dependent, i.e. the greater the infection intensity in the host, the greater the detrimental impact on host fitness. However, the mechanisms determining infection in marine hosts are still poorly understood. Here, we investigated the effect of cercarial dose and exposure frequency (single vs. trickle infections) of a marine trematode parasite, Himasthla elongata (Trematoda: Echinostomatidae), on infection intensity and success in its second intermediate host, the

Consistency of trematode infection prevalence in host populations across large spatial and temporal scales.

Parasites can impart heavy fitness costs on their hosts. Thus, understanding the spatial and temporal consistency in parasite pressure can elucidate the likeliness of parasites' role as agents of directional selection, as well as revealing variable environmental factors associated with infection risk. We examined spatiotemporal variation in digenetic trematode infection in 18 populations of an intertidal host snail (Littorina littorea) over a 300 km range at an 11-yr interval, more than double the generation time of the snail. Despite a complete turnover in the snail host population, the avera
